Why did the band have such a problem with backchat when it is clearly one of the best songs on hot space. Brian said it was to much of a change, despite Brian writting the worst sn on the album; dancer, which had less guitar and more synth than backchat. I think backchat is one of the best songs on Hotspace.
I like this song as well. I especially like listening to it live. It has such a smooth guitar solo, one of Brian's best in my opinion. The reason why it wasn't successful is certainly debatable, but I think there's no question that the song is very different, as was most of Hot Space. Therefore, the reaction was understandably skeptical and unsure. But, now that we look back in hindsight we realize the song and the album wasn't terrible.
I don't think Dancer is such a bad song by the way. The song in itself has some great moments for Brian May -- it's open to several great guitar moments. Now, if we're going to pick least favorites, I'd have to say Action This Day is my least favorite off the album at the moment. The song sounds too mechanical, not enough emotion -- but then again, that's just my interpretation.
This is one of my fav songs of this album...Hot space is personally my fav queen album for doing the housework to...hehehe makes me iron faster!!!

Hot Space is one of my favorites as well... my favorite, according to my profile but that was like 7 years ago.
One of my favorite tracks is Dancer, by the way. I liked Staying Power, Dancer, Put Out the Fire, Las Palabras de Amor and Under Pressure from day one.
Songs that have grown on me: Body Language (a friend of mine LOVES it to bits!) and Calling all girls.
I agree, the solo on Back Chat is one of Brian's better solos from this era, but I have never enjoyed this song. I usually skip it.
Don't Mess with Dancer! :D
I can't decide which is the best track on Hot Space: Cool Cat or Backchat
The extremely short solo (perfect length, btw) is worth the price of the album alone. Nice groovy bass line. Mix in the vocal and you've got one heck of a song.
I'm not sure what problem the band had with it.
I too like the song, particularly the vocal performance. The video for the song on the other hand is a real howler, and if that was used to promote the song, no wonder it died a death.
Hi Liam, no disrespect towards you but i think Back Chat has a dull droning quality to it. It has no peak of energy, emotion in my view. The phrase Back Chat itself is not very compeling. I do think Brians guitar in Dancer is quite good and the best thing about that song.

Anyone else like it?
Best song is Life is Real - basically the 2nd half of the album is good. Body Language live was class...infact all the 1st half tracks live were class
I also think Back Chat is one of the best songs on Hot Space.
Other great songs on Hot Space are Staying Power and COOL CAT. And of course Under Pressure...
I like to listen to Hot Space when I do my dishes : )

Wow, Charlie. If anything, it's the most climatic song on the album. Perhaps you have an import.
With each verse, Fred carefully builds to a strong, powerful shot. "And you ALWAYS get your way." You don't feel that? He's pissed. It's like he's ranting, and he's not holding back.
Then after a couple of tirades, he calms down while that synth & synth drum takes over. And then Brian explodes!!! This is the final straw! And with Fred's final rant, Brian backs each line with emphasis.
It's clearly one of the more "thought-out" songs on the disc, I'm surprised the Queen listener wouldn't pick up on that more. This one really came from the heart.
'Back Chat' should have been the first single from the album instead of 'Body Language'. It's definitely one of the more successful experiments on Hot Space, and should have been given more attention. Some have called it a poor man's attempt to replicate the success of 'Another One Bites The Dust', but I think 'Back Chat' works far better and has a little more life to it than AOBTD. At least there's a damn guitar solo in it...!

I must differ with the great Microwave. Hes ranting but its more like a dejected rant not an enraged rant. Its not 'Bitch stop talking about me behind my back!!' its more like 'Oh that bitch won't stop talking about me behind my back.' Freddies more complaining than telling someone off. And i forgot to mention that off putting drum machine bit at the opening. I'm sure they put a good bit of thought into the song as they did with the vast majority of their songs. Its doesn't seem like Brian, Roger and John could be bothered to put much thought into Body Language though.
looking back wasn't it said for a song that's called "backchat" it wasn't very angry as it originally had no guitar solo, so brian beefed it up at a bit
Anyway, Back Chat is a good song but it has quite a dry production... I personally like songs nice and wet, and well naturally lubricated! It's missing something as well. But I do enjoy the song.
