Readme.txt Queen Cologne, Germany Sporthalle February 1, 1979 This is the complete Cologne 79 show, something which collectors have been after for ages. It has always come out in bits and pieces, but always the same few songs were missing. Here it is, complete, and probably in the best quality we'll ever get for it. There are two audience sources. One has popped up on various LP and CD bootlegs over the years, and there is an uncut tape from this source (we'll call this uncut one "source A"). The uncut tape is actually a bit worse quality than the best LP source. So, I have taken about 2/3 of the show from that LP source, and It's Late, BoRhap, TYMD, SHA, WWRY, WATC, and GSTQ from the uncut tape. A second audience source (of inferior quality, which we'll call "source B") was used to fill in source A's missing parts during Dreamers Ball and WATC. Overall, the quality is close to excellent, but it fluctuates now and then, as indicated above. The edits are as smooth as possible. Also, I listened to the show carefully, and removed all of the vinyl ticks, and any other flaws in the sound. And of course they all play at the same tape speed/pitch. Here's the setlist. Here's a simple share - about 30 seconds not on the common Frankfurt recording. Here we have some of Brian's speech before Somebody To Love, and the beginning of the song. It cuts out where the common recording begins. The quality is pretty bad, but completists are welcome to make this track 1 of their disc 1. It's the same source as the common recording - just ten tape generations worse, at least!
Brian's speech is pretty inaudible, but it's genuine, thanks to Greg's book being able to confirm (although Greg didn't include the last sentence, but thankfully that was audible enough):
"I want to say a special thank you to you people in the Festhalle. This is the biggest crowd we've ever played to in Europe, so thank you. Okay, a little song called Somebody To Love."

Sound is excellent until Bohemian Rhapsody. Very clear and enjoyable.
From BoRhap to the end the sound is VG-/G+ and comes from another source.
Still, it is most likely genuine as Freddie thanks the audience in German
during God Save The Queen and it is not from any other German show I know.
The band intro and '39 features in the Live Killers album. Great show
overall and pity that the first two songs are missing (WWRY and Let Me
Entertain You). Also Spread Your Wings is cut from the beginning.

A good portion of the material for Live Killers was chosen from this show,
and it's not hard to see why. Some stand-out versions are played at this gig,
and I really recommend you hearing them from the audience's perspective.
Read my Live Killers Analysis page for more details on this show. The first
two tracks are missing, and after Keep Yourself Alive, the remaining tracks
are only G+ quality. I have a 2cd of the G+ recording, and it is most definitely
the same source as the EX tracks. With that in mind, chances are good that the l
ast tracks exist (or at least, have once existed) in EX quality.

Nice bootleg from Frankfurt in 1979. Incomplete show as the first 2 songs are
unfortunately missing and the song Spread Your Wings is cut from the beginning.
The soundquality is Excellent- until the Mustapha(Intro). From the Mustapha(Intro)
till the end of the show the soundquality is only Good as it comes from a other
source probably. The other source is still genuine because Freddie says
'' Thank you and good night Frankfurt! '' during God Save The Queen.
There are some slightly pops on some songs but nothing bad. Brian's intro to
the band and the song ' 39 are featuring on the '' Live Killers '' album.

Incomplete recording. Many sources say that Now I'm Here and '39 on Live Killers
come from this concert but I'm pretty sure Now I'm Here DOESN'T. Sound quality
is better than very good, almost very good plus.

songs, as some of the songs from this concert have been used on the official

If nobody else does, I'll eventually share the DVD too, when I've got a bit more time to share something that big. The audio is truly excellent quality. It sounds about as good as Live Killers, but mono. Too bad only 7 tracks were ever broadcasted. GSTQ cuts out a bit early, so I spliced in the last few seconds from another DVD source. Both DVDs weren't encoded to their fullest quality potential, so one might argue that this share is lossy. I'll leave it to the experts to decide. Either way, this is the best recording I've found over years of collecting. If anyone has a better one, I'll be happy to be trumped out on this one. Songs comming from the source 1 are marked with an * in the tracklist. Source 1
was loud and destored, source 2 was bass heavy, loud, destored and slow. I
have speed-corrected the second source, remastered both and crossfaded the two
sources to create this complete compilation. There are many cuts during this

There's a great moment after Somebody To Love. Freddie remains sitting at the piano and says, "Ok, we have a slightly different show tonight from last night, so it should be a lot of fun. This next song is from A Night At The Opera. This is called Death On Two Legs." He then realizes he has messed up the setlist, and says, probably slightly embarrassed, "I told you it would be a different show!" He fiddles on the piano briefly, gets up, and continues, "I think we're gonna change it. This is called If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em!" Looking at one of his bandmates, he adds, "Fuck off!" as Brian starts the song. It's quite nice to hear these "non-audience" versions of Love Of My Life, a song that doesn't exercise the higher range, to appreciate the sheer beauty of Freddie Mercury's voice.

The Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia from 1975 to 1979 represents one of the
most extreme case of social engineering and genocide in the twentieth century.
The communist rule initiated a program by which all were forced to work in
labor camps for twelve hours a day and the wholesale execution of
professionals, intellectuals, and non-ethnic Cambodians. During this time the
extent of genocide in the killing fields was hard to know since they forbid
outside intervention. Vietnam captured Phnom Penh on January 7th, 1979, the
Khmer Rouge were forced out of power and it is estimated between 1.4 million
and 2.2 million were killed over the four years.
It is in this context that Secretary General of the U.N. Kurt Waldheim asked
Paul McCartney for a concert to raise funds. He agreed and three shows were
scheduled at the end of Wings’ Back To The Egg tour. Queen were touring the
UK on the Crazy tour which was a payback tour for ignoring their homeland on
the Jazz tour, and also for their number two single "Crazy Little Thing Called
Love." Queen were scheduled to play six shows at the end of the tour in
London, each in a different venue: Lyceum Ballroom, Rainbow Theatre, Purley
Tiffany’s, Tottenham Mayfair, Lewisham Odeon, and Alexandra Palace (seven
months before it caught fire).
The band agreed to tack one more show onto the schedule for the event, playing
in the Hammersmith Odeon on Boxing Day. They were the only act to play on
a bill alone and did not participate in the Rochestra ending with McCartney on
December 29th. Each of the four shows were both filmed and professionally
recorded. The film Concert For Kampuchea released in August 1980 with two
Queen tracks, "Now I’m Here" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." In April
an LP was released Concerts for the People of Kampuchea which has only one
Queen song, "Now I’m Here." More footage was used for the German TV special
but unfortunately the entire show hasn

"Crazy Little Thing Called Love" was their hit single and is received so
ecstatically that the audience continue singing the chorus even after the song
is over. The band play along and accompany the singing mob before moving right
into "Bohemian Rhapsody." "Sheer Heart Attack" is the first encore and the
audience applaud loudly when Freddie throws over the amplifier stack and the
show ends with "We Will Rock You" (sung from the shoulders of Superman) and
"We Are The Champions." Complete Kampuchea Concert is one of the most
important releases on the Gypsy Eye label since it is the only silver release
of this great show in the proper sequence. It is a show that contains a
sizzling performance in a excellent recording and is highly recommended.
Queen performed as part of the Concerts For The People Of Kampuchea (Cambodia),
which were performed over a few days at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. Other
performers included The Who (who played for three hours), Wings, The
Pretenders, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, The Clash, and the members of
Led Zeppelin (minus Jimmy Page). A 2-LP set was released in 1981, including
Now I'm Here from Queen's set.
About 75 minutes of pro video footage exist from this show. Many songs were
broadcast on TV in 1980 as part of a German TV special on the band (We Will
Rock You, Let Me Entertain You, Somebody To Love, Killer Queen, I'm In Love
With My Car, You're My Best Friend, Save Me, the first half of Now I'm Here,
Don't Stop Me Now, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Sheer Heart Attack, We Will
Rock You, We Are The Champions, and God Save The Queen), and a few others
have shown up as well (the tail ends of Jailhouse Rock, Mustapha, and BoRhap,
as well as Death On Two Legs, Get Down Make Love, the complete Now I'm Here,
Love Of My Life, '39, and Tie Your Mother Down). The bootleg DVD called "Live
Crazy 1979" by Digital Queen Archives (listed below) includes all of the known
footage.
Freddie's vocal range is still top notch on this last show of the tour,
although he doesn't always hit the high notes cleanly as he did in Newcastle
earlier in the month. Still, these versions of Somebody To Love and We Are The
Champions are dripping with passion from him and are among the best ever
performed.
In his solo spot, Brian plays a few chords that loosely resemble In The Space
Capsule which would appear on the Flash Gordon soundtrack the following year.
He then plays a specially rehearsed version of Silent Night, a gesture much
appreciated by the audience.
At many shows on this tour, the audience (led by those "Royal Family" fans)
would continue singing Crazy Little Thing Called Love after the band finished
the song. The band even joins in tonight.
These are the final performances of If You Can't Beat Them, Don't Stop Me Now,
Spread Your Wings, and '39.
Within a few days, the 70s would come to an end, and Queen would never again
be the same. The success of The Game in North America would shift Queen's
gears as a band, both in concert and otherwise.

Absolutely... this is a matrix of sources, which is far superior. Mix = sources switching back and forth, often with cross-fades out of one and into the next Matrix = sources playing at the same time, adding much depth Very well done, Pittrek!
