These lists are completely irrelevant, and merely reflect a contrived taste of a douchebag who wanted to get laid, but couldn't learn to play the bass. Ask and members of this forum will come up with 50 completely different but equally justifiable lists. |

They were horrible in concert, not that you could even hear them). Kiss at 9... gimme a break. Maybe for 2-3 years in the 70s.... Springsteen needs to be in the top 5. Rush needs to be in the top 10. Hendrex needs to drop a few spots. I find his live performances really sloppy. Maybe you had to be there to appreciate... Guns N Roses needs to drop some spots too. David Bowie's placement would depend on what year you're talking about. He could be anywhere from 5 to 500. Lastly... Who the hell is Sensational Alex Harvey? Edit. Sorry for the pink... don't know how it happened! |

This list is impossible to rank... First off... NOBODY could have possibly seen all these bands in concert for comparison's sake. Second, your talking about bands who's careers stretched over decades. Are we assuming that the ranking is each of these bands at their peak? Averaged? Original members or best version of the band? Third, there are so many diferrent genres here, that it becomes silly to try to compare. Can you honestly rank Grateful Dead concerts versus Rammstien? |

As far as singing is concerned... Well, I just say one thing: Liars! lol Yes. Liar, 1985, Rock in Rio. Huge audience. One of the greatest ever, like in São Paulo, 1981. Freddie sings higher than in recording, but it's not only that: the way he controls pitch, color, articulation and the way he holds the notes without using vibrato - which is, however, great when the piece is intended to be sung with it, and it's a difficult technique to master: people often confuse vibrato with inability to sustain a note - is enough to rest my case. The whole body of the guy is singing. Take a look. He uses his whole body, every muscle. It's impressive, it sends chills down your spine so perfect is the tune, articulation and the clever change in the tone. He reminds me of bass or baritone opera singers, but...boy, singing for thousands and thousands of people and rocking hard. Just this song is enough to put him in first place as far as singing is concerned. And, one may argue, it's one of Freddie's worst periods... |

Charlie Brown 28.05.2008 01:37 |
I tried watching Pink Floyds The Pulse concert film earlier this year on tv and found it so boring i changed the channel. So i must differ with the magazine putting them so high on this list. I can't imagine a Police concert being that exciting either. What do people rock out to at one of their concerts Message In A Bottle? And Champipple mentioned Jimi Hendrix playing being sloppy, which is probably true but how many guitarists play their guitars behind the back or by placing the pick between their teeth. |
wilk 28.05.2008 15:27 |
I've struggled to make it through Pink Floyd concerts as well. They rely a lot upon their props. Good enough musicians but boring performers and songwriters. |
Charlie Brown 28.05.2008 18:01 |
^ Hi Wilk, yeah the lighting design and lasers were impressive in that Pink Floyd concert i tried watching, but unfortunately much more impressive than their performance |
goinback 28.05.2008 20:19 |
That's what a Pink Floyd show is supposed to be though, they pioneered live multimedia. It's completely different than a Queen show...the performers at a Pink Floyd show aren't supposed to take the spotlight. (IMHO though the Pulse tour wasn't one of their more imaginative shows, the '87 tour was much more creative...and of course the Wall shows from '80-'81 were the most complicated and grand rock shows ever produced to this day, just boggled the mind that that was possible.) Pink Floyd and Queen are the two bands that equally wanted to push the boundaries of live shows, though they did it in different ways. Both bands should have the top two slots because they completely changed rock concerts forever. |
Drummer imense! 28.05.2008 21:16 |
Obviously very few of you all read classic rock mag. It was a list where they got Rock musicians and industry profesionals to vote on their favorite live acts, and the votes were counted up thus putting them in this order. Queen don't float everyones boat, you can't please everyone all the time. I mean Springsteen.... ugh. Quite glad Pink Floyd got put high up, they are fantastic musicians and the live acts are a spectical. Pulse is a bit lame on the perormance side, but still great. |
Charlie Brown 03.06.2008 00:26 |
I wasn't trying to rub any Pink Floyd fans the wrong way with my critique by the way. Thanks to Drummer Imense for telling us this list was determined by a vote of industry pros. I'm surprised that someone like Bruce Spingsteen who is as far as i know respected to a great extent by industry pros is not higher on the list myself. U2 has won The Grammy Award for album of the year twice but is not especially high on the list when taking that fact into consideration. Billy Joel and Elton John aren't even on the list which i don't get considering the accolades they have received from their peers |

Im surprised Kiss are so high up, sure its an expensive show but they are hardly ace musicians. Not too my taste anyway;) |
Champipple 04.06.2008 13:38 |
I've seen Kiss a few times (including front row) and have many bootleg videos of 70s shows.... I really like the music (especially the Destroyer / Love Gun / R+R Over trio), but their certainly not in the top 10 of all time. They run a very "set" show. They also drop about 500 spots in my book for pretending to have Ace and Peter still in the band. If Brian May retires, it would be like Q=PR continuing with someone wearing a frizzy wig and playing a Red Special imitation. Ace Frehley continues to rock as good as ever... I had tickets to see him earlier this year, but there was a huge snowstorm and I couldnt make it to the show. There's lots of great youtube videos from this tour though. IMO, his show's better than Kiss. For Pink Floyd, whomever said they approach concerts diferrently was bang-on. I've seen them as well on their last world tour and it was quite an amazing show, but they don't engage the audience... it's more of a performance "show" than a "concert". |

Springsteen can go out alone with an acoustic guitar and move an entire stadium, surely that must count for something. I know Kiss has big show, but personally I prefer artists that are great in themselves. When I saw ACDC a couple of years ago they just came on stage, plugged in their guitars and started playing and it was fabulous. Ive even heard fans of Kiss saying that with out the make-up and the pyrotechnics they arent anything special. That said, it it sure was a big spectacle in their heyday. But that doesnt mean they have that extra thing to make them one of the top tem live bands ever. |
