Hello all. OK, I'm posting this message for all of you Queen/Def Leppard fans out there...it is a thinking message and I want you all to chime in. If you aren't a Def Leppard fan, DON'T READ! I've been thinking about it, and Def Leppard and Queen are similar in many ways. I personally have all of the albums of both bands and its interesting to compare which albums are similar between the two bands in various periods of their career. I'll start with Def's first album: "On Through the Night"- It is most similar to Queen's debut album "Queen." Both albums are very raw and don't represent what the band did in their prime. You get the sense that both bands are still learning and feeling through things...and have NO idea what is to come. Def's second album "High and Dry" is a sneak preview of what is to come from the band and it is most comparable to "Queen II." Both albums have one big hit "Bringing on the Heartache"/"Seven Seas of Rhye." Both bands are coming into form. "Pyromania," DL's third album is a classic. The album is raw, yet had great commercial success. It is comparable most to "Sheer Heart Attack." Pyromania had "Foolin", "Rock of Ages", "Photograph" to name a few and Sheer Heart Attack had "Killer Queen" and "Now I'm Here." Both albums were huge (Def's probably bigger than Queen's) but both's band's next albums would be their trademark. "Hysteria" DL's next album is closest to Queen's "Night at the Opera." 100 yrs from now, both bands will be remembered for these albums. DL had more than half of the songs released and chart high. Queen had Bohemian Rhapsody. Both bands are at their height in these albums. DL followed up w/ "Adrenalize", which could almost be called "Hysteria II" in my opinion. They are put together in almost the same way, although producer Mutt Lange has left for the most part (I think he was in on 2-3 songs). "Adrenalize" had several hits as well, but wasn't quite as memorable as "Hysteria." "Adrenalize" is most comparable to "A Day at the Races", which is almost considered "A Night at the Opera II." Both ANATO and ADATR are very similar, however ADATR didn't have the cohesiveness ANATO had. Both albums are amazingly put together but impossable to follow a masterpeice in both band's instances. "RetroActive" is DL's next album. It is an album of B-Sides and unreleased material. Queen never put anything out like this. Hard to compare this album to anything Queen did, so I won't. Chime in if you guys have any suggestions. DL's next album was "Slang." Not awful, but a totally different direction. Totally, almost urban sound. Definately DL's "Hot Space." I think both band HAD to put out a "Slang"/"Hot Space" to experiment and test the waters. Both albums are shunned by diehard fans. After "Slang" came "Euphoria" from DL. I feel "Euphoria" is most comparable to Queen's "The Miracle." Both bands are trying (unsuccessfully) to return to their roots, but what we get is a popped-up rock product that had a couple of hits, but failed to return to glory. Both albums are big, but not quite returning the bands to prominence. "X" is DL's next album. Very weak. Hard to compare this to a Queen album, but I'd say "A Kind of Magic." Both bands are going through the motions and I think their just on cruise control. Want to get out and tour. "Songs From the Sparkle Loung," DL's most recent album is a GEM! It is a return to glory in my opinion. The best since Hysteria! But it is totally different. It is equivelent to "Innuendo." Both bands are going back to their roots, but adding a slight twist. "Sparkle Lounge" has only been out a couple weeks, but has charted highest since "Adrenalize." So what to you guys think? I'm sure there are some big Def Leppard fans out there. They are SO similar to Queen! Queen is also a huge influence on DL. Hope you are all still awake and I'm anxious to see what you have to say. |

You want to know how I honestly feel? I think you're trying very hard to find similarities between these two bands (probably because it would make you feel better on a personal level), but you never get past the most superficial level. I could write a similar comparison between Queen and just about any other band with more than half a dozen albums released, but it would be utterly pointless if I wouldn't take it anywhere beyond this level. |

Def Leppard made most consistently good albums than Queen who made greater songs overall. I don't think Queen made a consistently good album since News Of The World. |

I actually like the first three albums, but c'mon dude. Do you really think that over-processed, reverb heavy piece of crap is anything close to NATO? Okay, maybe it's as good as Seaside Rendezvous. The vocals sound about the same. The problem with them, I hate to say, is that they lost the rhythm when they lost the arm. If anything, the transistion between Pyromania and Hysteria was more like going from The Game to Hot Space. The change in guitarists didn't help much either. Want to get out and tour." goes to show you know fuck all about leppard, X was the best thing they did since hysteria the 1st 7 songs are as good as anything they've done & you forgot the yeah! album which queen album is that? fuck me you must have nothing to do as for the whole rick allen debate, its made no difference at all, rick didn't even use an acoustic kit on pyromania it was electronic, the whole album was pieced together in sections. so there's that argument gone steve clarke was major loss i agree in terms of song writing & slang was clear evidence of that something was missing & in my opinion "X" was the 1st album to show that huge void closing which has continued to the new one, but Viv has been in there longer than steve was anyway & the band function far better, as for pete willis he blew it on album 2 which was 1981 hardly figures in 2008 |

Well congrats! Can't say it went to a better guy! Anyways, the Rick Allen debate isn't a debate at all. I'm not ready to write my Def Leppard thesis, but Pyromania was the beginning of the end. There was some great stuff on there, but hints of crap to come. Processed vocals and overcompressed drums. They seemed to leave the guitars alone, though. Photograph is a prime example of that, but they needed a hit. I didn't see Queen conforming to conventional rules to get their first real blockbuster in Bohemian Rhapsody... In fact, they broke a lot of the rules!!! I hope you have a better day... |

I love Queen and like Def Leppard enough. I really think it's a stretch to compare them. IMO, Def Leppard's glory years were largely thanks to Mutt Lang's production rather than the songwriting and performance. As soon as he leaves, they start tanking hard. Mutt Lang is a freakin musical genius. |

I like Def Leppard, but honestly just mentioning the term "Def Leppard" in most social situations elicits laughter. "Queen" of course is a different story.... |
