Good question, because I also have a Rock Masters version, from a TV Show (I think it's an australian one) called MusicMax. It's a mpg file (352 x 288) that I downloaded here in QZ 3 years ago or so. I guess if there's a better video quality available (DVD or not) for an improvement. Sorry my english.Cheers! Here is a capture : link New Info: It´s the complete BBC "NBDtv" broadcast. |

Has anyone ever tried to compile the best sources (both video and audio) to re-create as much of the whole concert as possible? If I had the sources - or even knew where to get them - I'd do it myself! :) |
Bo Alex 03.05.2008 19:46 |
Your version is so much better than mine...It would be an excellent improve... |

Yes, I would do that, but torrents doesn't work right for me. Thanks anyway... |

Hi, Pittrek! Sorry for bothering you. First of all, thank you for your relentless work, many thanks. My collection, which is going to be comprised of 4 CDS, huge collection, is already halfway. The 2 concerts of the 70's I've chosen are Portland, 74', and Hammersmith, 75', both part of your "best of the best", both downloaded in those threads. I must say that I just loved the way both sound. Thank you and, of course, for the other people who made it possible. It's sounds really amazing, I enjoyed it a lot, the whole work you've don on Hammersmith is good. So, let me just ask you: what is the difference between your compilation and "There's no Sanity Clause"? I know, I can go for the info on the web, but I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer so I'd love if you just pointed out, briefly, the differences between both as far as sources and sound quality are concerned. Just a few lines, doesn't need to take you more than a minute, but it'll help clarifying the whole mess surrouding this concert, I don't even know what is what anymore, so many sources, versions, compilations, oh dear! I'm lost. Thank you again for the share - I've been listen to Hammersmith a lot, and I enjoyed Brian's guitar work in Killer Queen, it's very clear in the version you shares, and it's thrilling the way he plays it, one can listen to it very clearly, because I often forget, due to bad sound quality or changes in the performances, that Killer Queen has great guitar lines besides the solo, so...! Thanks! ANd I liked the "tatatadadaaaa" a lot, that was awesome! Terrific. Every share should have something like that. |
Yara 05.05.2008 13:19 |
He emulates the staccato-like theme done in the piano with his guitar in Killer Queen, it sounds pretty good live in Hamm 75', very cleverly done, and adds his own spin to it, with interesting chords and choice of notes. So, thank you again, Pittrek! |

Hi Yara, it will be a slightly longer response :-) As you (probably) know this concert was originally aired live on BBC TV (on Old Grey Whistle Test) and on BBC radio (on BBC In Concert, I think). The OGWT TV broadcast ended during the rock'n'roll medley, but the concert continued. Two copies of the master tape existed, one in the BBC archives and one in Queen archives. One of these "master" tapes was probably destroyed, the second one still exists, but it has the intro part ruined. This second tape was source for many re-broadcasts, two of the most important are the Music Max version and the Japan WoWoW version. Both versions come from the same source, but are slightly differently edited. Both of them start during the explosion in Now I'm Here, and during the Rock'n'Roll medley there is a repeated video section (on the place where the closing credits were originally aired). Also during the concert Freddie used many times the word "Christmas", which is cut from both re-broadcasts. There are also some minor edits, for example in one of the versions Freddie's comment about the audience "You can take all your clothes off" is cut, also Brian's guitar work of Brighton Rock starts during Freddie's speech ("Now we're gonna feature Brian, Brian May on guitar, and this number is entitled Brighton Rock"). And many many small edits (sometimes even 2-3 frames long). The WoWoW version has unfortunately "watermarks" - the WoWoW logo on the top right corner of the screen on beginning of every song, and the song title (usually with MANY errors) on the bottom. The complete OGWT broadcast exists only on bootlegs (one of them was shared here a couple of weeks ago). I have a strong feeling that the BBC don't have their master anymore, because nothing before Now I'm Here was shown in any of their numerous Queen specials & documentaries, only in the last years they started to put some small bits into their new Queen-related TV shows, but all of these bits are in bootleg quality. Now to the radio source - the concert (and probably also the radio broadcast) continued after the TV crew packed their equipment after the r'n'r medley and left Hammersmith. 3 more songs were played - Seven Seas Of Rhye, See What A Fool I've Been and a taped outro - God Save The Queen. These songs exist only in audio form. Many audio bootlegs were released, they all were sourced from this radio broadcast, but they were NEVER complete. They all had the same edits as the TV rebroadcasts (usually dropping all Christmas references) + they also removed some songs. The best sounding version comes from the pre-FM Westwood Radio One source. This version was the best sounding source for this concert until 2005. In 2005 Swedish radio (I don't remember its name right now) received the soundboard master tapes and created a brand new mix, with powerfull drums, but problematic sounding backing vocals (e.g. the harmonies in Killer Queen sound terrible in this release, but OK in the old mix). The problem is that they have added some weird sound effects (e.g. before White Queen), and their source is also heavily cut. Somebody has taken this new broadcast and added the last tracks from a different re-broadcast and the result was the bootleg CDr "There Aint No Sanity Clause". And NOW to your question :-) What I did was that I have taken the best bits from both audio sources and all the missing bits were added from the OGWT broadcast. I hope it's clear :-) BTW if there are any misstakes in the text, feel free to correct me. |
The Real Wizard 05.05.2008 15:11 |
Great explanation!
Only one small correction:
The complete OGWT broadcast exists only on bootlegs. No bootleg has ever had the original OGWT broadcast. It has just emerged from people who taped it off TV. |

Pittrek, I must say it was one of the most throughgoing, clear and generous answers I ever got here. Thank you very much, really. It was so sweet and kind of you. Like...uh...well, this is it. :op Thank you very much again, Pittrek! It did make things clear to me and helped a whole lot. SirGH, as always!, thank you! You're so knowledgeable about the band's history that I can't see why, you know, well, forget it, it's just that I love your website and the work you've done. It's a invaluable sort. Thank you both of you! I'm so honored... Having my question answered by two most distinguished knights...not that I'm a lady or a Queen, but...sometimes knights feel pity of the peasants. lol Thanks! |
The Real Wizard 07.05.2008 01:18 |
I've been called a lot of things... and I mean a LOT... but never a knight! You're too sweet. |

I'm about to download a DVD of this concert to improve my own version (a vcd one). Please I would like to know the quality of the version I'll download. An advice from you (kind people like pittrek, Sir GH or Olivier) would be very aprecciated. The info that I got for that version is the next: From Japanese TV broadcast - "Rock Masters" Fresh DVD transfer from a very low generation VHS tape. About 1 hour long, has a 5 minute intro featuring promos for upcoming shows and a Japanese TV announcer. Solid Quality, B+/A- Sample format: Automatic Audio format: Automatic Encoding mode: High Quality (2-Pass VBR) Number of titles: 1 1. VTS_01_1 (Video Title, 1h 02m 19s, 12 chapters) Video mode: NTSC Aspect ratio: 4:3 Quality: Long play (3382 kbps) Resolution: 720 x 480 (CCIR-601 D1) Number of menus: 1 - Menu for VTS_01_1 (3 pages) Please, if anybody knows this version tell me if it's good or not... (It's in Rapidshare in 17 parts of 100 mb each one aprox., which is the best way to download it to me). Thanks in advance! Sorry for my english. Cheers! |

Some of the recent versions don't have good audio, as Mercury 90 pointed out. You can't go wrong with "Christmas Eve At Hammersmith", which was shared here: link |
