Anyone else here like them? I saw them Friday at the House Of Blues here in this shithole of a town called Myrtle Beach. And fuck it was excellent. I showed my real ID to the security guy that clearly showed I was 18, and yet he gave me a blue wristband, (the blue means over 21, the pink means under 21) so I got shitfaced. After the show I got to meet Cedric and the new drummer, (whatever his name is, I can't remember, but he's a fucking beast) they signed my Frances the Mute LP, but being a drunken asswhole I gave it away to some chick. Fuck.
Discuss.
ugh i cant stand them...but i can only base on what i heard at RHCP in 2006. they opened for them and it was a 45 minute jam, or rather a ball of obnoxious noise.
i thought i was the mistake of the sound guys being assholes since it was the opening act. so i came home to listen to some of their stuff, hoping it was that reason. nope. they still sounded awful to me.
it must be an aquired taste?

It's without a doubt an acquired taste. At the risk of sounding like Treasure Moment, I really do think it takes an intellectual and an open-mindedness to get into TMV and what they do. But that doesn’t mean that an intellectual person can’t listen to bullshit pop music, nor does it mean that “smart people” are the only ones that get into TMV, there have been a lot of drunken douche bags at every Volta show I've been to. Even on Friday's show, Cedric told off some asswhole who was shouting for them to “play a song” during a jam. He said "If you don't want to hear it, you can go home asswhole." That got a loud round of applause from the crowd and myself included.
BTW, I saw them on that Chili Pepper tour in Atlanta, and you really can't compare that short 45 minutes or so slot to a true TMV experience, which is one where they just fucking play for 3 hours without any limitations or boundaries whatsoever and really get into some deep shit.
But hey, you call their jams obnoxious, I call it an orgasmic, mindblowing fucking experience. To each his own I guess. :)
And of course, a little bit of kind bud helps when listening to said jams. ;P

im sure you didnt mean it this way, but i hate it when people say "it takes an intelligent person to like....." it is probably my biggest pet peeve, when people (unintentionally or not) insult one's intelligence.. its a matter of personal taste, is all.
i think what wouldve helped at the show was if i had ear plugs. not to ignore them, but to hear them better, and filter the sound. i really think the sound guys were not doing justice for them. when RHCP went on, they were great, no sound issues there.
ugh i hope that wont happen at my first show.
ah well. like we agreed, its an aquired taste. it would not be the first or last time i gave things a listen a few more times and i like them after a while. to each his own ;)
I enjoy the Mars Volta while understanding that they are, in many respects, crap.
Allow me to explain. They've got bizarre and incredible instrumental prowess. These guys can rock in a fashion that defies categorization. However, their lyrics are patent shit. It's incredibly frustrating to talk to fans who wax philosophic about lines like 'I crawl into a bed of broken windows' or 'the kiosk in my frontal lobe is shaped like Rosalind Carter.' It's all bullshit, albeit psychotically catchy and orgasmic bullshit. I think they're a marvellous band, but I loathe the faux-intellectual tag that blights their fans. I don't even hate the lyrics, really. I just giggle when Cedric wails about 'a necklace of follicles with sabertooth monacles.'
Seen them live twice in 2005 and just last month and they always rock (God, I'm starting to sound like Brian :-)
Your probably right about the lyrics, epsecially these days, but the noise they make is enough for me. Deloused is still by far their best work and a lot of the live stuff around then had some great jam bits in them. Now though, I think that sometimes there can be too many layers and insturments in there and it starts to sound confused, but if your in the right frame of mind for it its great.

I agree whole-heartedly.
Usually, it translates to:
An intellegent person with an open mind = someone who doesn't care about structure, harmony, clarity, or anything else for that matter.
Or a couple of weeks with an amp, guitar, and Gin and you can do it too!!!
Bad sell, Mr. Queso.
I'm sure there was one band member shirtless, plenty of tattoos and piercings, the guitar playing smoker, Line 6 pedalboards, and a fan to blow on the hair of the mane-liest member.

Mr. Wave, holy shit, were you there!?! There was in fact a fan blowing on the singer (probably the longest hair), and a shirtless drummer. It was a non smoking show, something about the smoke fucking up Cedric's voice or something, so there was none of that. (at least tobacco :P)
Open mindedness is a much better word than intellectual. Shouldn't have written that bit about being intellectual. I do sound like a dick now that I read it. :P

I couldn't disagree more with that statement. I'm too lazy to think why, but yeah.
Basically, I get a feeling listening to a TMV jam that no other band gives me, some people can get that feeling from pop or rap or what have you, and as stated before, to each his own. :) Still, The Mars Volta are just fucking fantastic.
