Being a massive Manchester United fan I wanted to mention today - being the 50th Anniversary since the Munich Air Crash....
For those who don't know what happened .....
On 6th February 1958 the airliner carrying players and backroom staff of Manchester United, plus a number of journalists and supporters, crashed in a blizzard on its third attempt to take off from Munich airport. United were returning from Belgrade where they had just beaten Red Star Belgrade in the European Cup and had stopped off at Munich for re-fuelling. Twenty-three (8 players - journalists, crew members and fans) of the forty-four passengers on board the aircraft lost their lives.
Only being 32......I was not around for this - however my father was a huge fan as well (god bless him) and not only being a massive fan was very good friends with some of the players who passed away and also survived(he lvied next door to a player who passed away called Eddie Coleman...... and he used to tell me stories of these players and how good this team was (and undoubtly been) it is easy to say this how good a team was (yes you are only as good as you what you win)
Anyway for those outside the UK who wasn't aware of this .... I though I would mention and educate people
Thanks ....
A broken heart, a broken dream,
a broken plane, a broken team,
no words were said, a silent vow,
we loved you then, we love you now,
the red flag will always fly,
for Manchester United will never die
Never to be forgotten. 6th February 1958
Good stuff nuno. Here's some info. about Ulsterman Harry Gregg, United's goalie, and a hero on that terrible night.
Harry Gregg, MBE (born October 25, 1932 in Tobermore, County Londonderry) is a Northern Irish former football player.
Harry started his career with Windsor Park Swifts F.C., the reserve team of Linfield, before signing for his local club Coleraine. At the age of 18 he earned a move across the Irish Sea to Doncaster Rovers, before transferring to Manchester United in December 1957. He earned 25 caps for the Northern Ireland national team. At the time of his transfer, he was the most expensive goalkeeper in the world.
Gregg was a goalkeeper who had 48 clean sheets in his United career. He is sometimes called 'The Hero of Munich' because he pulled some of his team mates from the burning plane during the Munich Air Disaster including Bobby Charlton, Jackie Blanchflower and Dennis Viollet. He also pulled out a woman and her baby as well as his badly-injured manager Sir Matt Busby.
Harry Gregg is rated by many as one of the the best goalkeepers Manchester United ever had.
the year of the rat begins tomorrow for chinese new years.
they say its a prominent year for plane crashes O.o
slightly off topic, but i just saw it. carry on :)
I'm a Liverpool FC fan and as most football fans would know we hate Manchester United but I have been watching a few of the documentaries shown to mark the Munich Aircrash and I was in tears. So very sad. I have known the story for years and what happened but now it has touched me in a new way. It really is too much to try and comprehend if a thing like that happened today. RIP Busby Babes.
