Alright, I've a health question. About cracking. No, not about the crack that people smoke, I mean the kind of cracking that people do with their neck and back and fingers and such.
I am a self-titled "compulsive crack-er". xD I crack my neck, jaw, sternum (That bone in between your ribs..) back, knees, fingers, the list goes on. I regularly crack pretty much everything, including joints I didn't even know existed. I know that this can't possibly be good for me, especially concerning my neck, back and sternum. There's just so many ligaments and vertebrate that can be damaged. Or worse. I'm especially concerned about my sternum, which I can crack, and then five minutes later I can crack again as if I haven't cracked it for days. (Crack crack crack. xD)
I was wondering if any of this could have to do with an injury I had when I was about 10... my friend and I were flipping on my Mum's bed (Horrendously stupid, yes) and I flipped and landed right on my head... I broke my collarbone, as well as had pain in my neck and chest area for about two months after. Every time I crack my sternum or neck I can't help but suspect this might have something to do with it all.
So now I ask, is there something wrong? Should I tell my parents I want to see a doctor and get X-Rayed? I don't want any of that spinal manipulation shit... I just would like to know what's wrong with me. xD
Thanks..
Apparently most cracking is caused by nitrogen in the bones and joints, which can cause some degree of damage, if you do it a lot, especially as you get older. This is what my physics teacher told me about 4 years ago, so it's probably wrong.
Hello,
I have been seeing a Chiropractor for a while now and have been getting my neck, back cracked twice a week now for a while.
Those cracking noises are not actually cracks, ist actually fluids and gases seaping out of your joints..
So, its not actually something thats bad for you. Unless your twising you bones and doing damage then you might be danger of doing something perminant.
A dr might be the go, but perhaps a Chiropractor can be good to.
I do ask you, do you have any back pains ect ect from you incident you menttioned?
I'm glad someone had the balls to start a medical thread, because I don't have the balls... Literally!
My balls seem to be getting smaller everyday, they're just as small as a pair of peas nowadays. Is that a bad thing?
Now, on a serious note - Cookies, if someone here doesn't know what the sternum is, I don't think he/she would qualify to help you... xD
Exactly how do you crack your sternum? Cracking is done with joints.
Most cracking seems harmless (or with limited harm), but I have heard that cracking one's neck can heighten one's risk of stroking.
I'm a compulsive knuckle and back cracker. I can't go two minutes without cracking my knuckles, and I'm always cracking my back, which is in pretty bad shape.

I thought the same, until I looked it up and read that there is actually a small joint in the sternum that is the source of said "cracking". link
Everything you wanted to know about a sternum but were afraid to ask. :P
i can only crack my fingers. i cant crack my back at all, which kinda sucks cuz its relieving when it does happen!
i can crack my toes too lol
but the weird thing is that my left hand, if i wrinkle my palm by closing my thumb and pinky and lift my wrist, it undoubtedly cracks each time. the only damage ive ever had with my wrists is my right hand from one fateful christmas where i 'sprained it' (it was a hairline fracture) and now i have calcium deposits on the spots that healed.
thats my story ;-p

Oh crack! I mean... crap! Every simgle joint in my body cracks! My neck cracks (ok... it is I who is cracking it) more than 5 times a day. Living in denial is so cool! So technically I have a predisposition towards strokes, so what? These exam sessions have eaten 40 years of my life, ergo, I don't have much left, do I? Yieks!
