rschoorl wrote: Hasn't a lot of this been officially released?Hardly any of it is official. The only BBC Sessions that were released was Session's One and Three, both of which are not here. You could argue that half of one of the tracks on the last session was released (We Will Rock You fast version) which was given away for free by The Sun newspaper here in the UK. There was some argument on this site that some of the De Lane Lea Demo's were just different mixes of the album versions, but I cant find the thread. |

My brief review: A couple of the 7-25-73 songs are upgrades, but the rest is equal or worse than the commonly available versions. Most of the songs have a light distortion to them. White Queen and Nevermore from 4-3-74 are lossy, at least (I didn't check everything). It's a decent collection for someone wanting all this stuff in one place, but they definitely could have done a bit more homework and found some better sources. So, thumbs down from me. |
pittrek 31.01.2008 13:40 |
Great to know that. I didn't start downloading yet, but the only reason to have them (for me) is if they're lossless, which they're not (all) |
Queenrockyou 31.01.2008 13:47 |
Thanks for that explanation, Bob, it gives us some more information about these tracks. So do you think someone could share here the best versions available of all these BBC sessions, to let us know what would have been the "perfect bootleg" ? It could be something really interesting !! Regards, Olivier, France. |

As good as TLH is, sometimes the best judge is your own two ears. I can hear digital noise a mile away, and those two tracks from 4-3-74 are dripping with it. |
Maruga 31.01.2008 14:07 |
Thanks for the info josedequeso... Lossy or just distortion? |
josedequeso 31.01.2008 14:11 |
Well, I'm too lazy to do every song in a frequency analysis but Bob's right, the ears are sometimes the best way to tell. Nevermore and White Queen from 74 sound terrible but they look alright in Audacity, although an ungodly amount of hiss reduction was used. |

Thanks for sharing - this is going to be brilliant. But, can someone PLEASE upload in Mediafire or Rapidshare? I'm relatively new to this downloading stuff & I have tried unsuccessfully to download quite a few torrents in the last month or so & it's the same old story - not enough seeders (& going to take some 3000 hours to download!) or no seeders at all. Whereas MF & RS are no problem at all, the files are there & you just hit the download button & voila! Can we have all downloads in MF or RS or, dare I say it, ban the torrent format? Okay, I know that's over the top but i'm really annoyed with torrents & have missed out on so many wonderful downloads. |

frank39 wrote: naughty naughty bootleggers, haven´t they heard about the lossy/lossless discussion here? The simply ignore the " do not convert to..." hints! and they dare to use lossy stuff!! Tttsss, naughty bootleggers.Yeah, because Queenzone is the only place that thinks preserving quality is a good idea... especially if you're paying money for it. |
Queenrockyou 31.01.2008 17:48 |
Hi ! I am quite OK with what you say, I can't use torrents and I see a lot of posts saying "please seed" or things like that. Anyway, we can't go to the point of saying we should ban the torrents from Queenzone. It's absolute non-sense !! In fact, we can consider the torrent as an alternative way of downloading files, an alternative to rapidshare and mediafire, who are themselves an alternative to the "right button / Save As" thing. Or maybe we should also say that Mediafire and Rapidshare are an alternative to the torrents !! It's a never-ending discussion. I for my part consider a mediafire or rapdishare more universal than the torrents, as everybody can go there and click on the button "download", whereas only a part of the Queenzoners have access to the torrent thing, for various reasons (I once heard about some people unable to use rapidshare from some countries, but don't really know about that, it has not been confirmed). I mean, even with a waiting period between downloads, everybody would have the files in the end, so that's why I consider rapidshare and Mediafire. On the other hand, what I learned here was that torrents was a very appreciated way of downloading, very easy to understand (I can't check all I say here, but I am sure a dozen Queenzoners would say so). And we have here Ginger, the Queen of the torrents, always ready to help and seed. And she's not alone !! So, what I would say is not that torrents must be banned, but more that files should be offered both ways, as a torrent and as mediafire or rapidshare (or badongo or whatever you want) links. The first offer on torrent should be converted by someone else into MF/RS links, and the same goes for the other way. It could not be the original sharer as it is too much work, and he maybe is not able to use torrents for example. A community is that, the spirit of sharing and helping everyone in getting exactly the same things that everybody else. But it's beginning to be more common these days, we can't take the torrenters as elitists unwilling to get down to other Queenzoners level, that is not true and dangerous thinking ! The torrent IS in itself something with people interconnecting and relying on the others !! There will always be leechers (I think it is the name we give to people who download but doesn't seed after that). So, both ways should be used, the most possible (except maybe for DVDs and big video files, a pain in the ass to upload on MF/RS, for those things I could only say that torrent is probably the best thing). And I can't say you're wrong when you say that some shares are missed by those who can't use torrents... Be patient, I'm sure minds are changing slowly, and there are some good old pals here that are more than happy to help !! Patience is the best thing, really. Regards, Olivier, France. |

For anyone interested, here's my frequency analysis of the first CD. As you can see they've mixed and matched sources throughout the CD. I've attached the spectrum+frequency for track 7 but the remaining tracks identified as mpeg don't have the expect sharp drop-off around 14 kHz - the high frequencies disappear more gradually - same result in the end. Will post disc 2 shortly. |

Right, on to Disc 2. It seems that all the Maida Vale tracks and two of the De Lane Lea tracks are lossless. The De Lane Leas of GKR and Jesus being MPEG. However the quality of the rainbow gig is too low for frequency analysis to get a positive lock - probably lossy too though. |
TimBHM 31.01.2008 19:14 |
So this now begs the obvious question to Bob. If I wanted to get the best lossless versions of the studio tracks on these discs (and I do!) what boot would I look for? "Complete BBC sessions" from Digital Queen Archives? |
peckery 31.01.2008 20:42 |
Oh God ! Talk about the "Emperor's New Clothes". Good quality mp3 (ie 192 or above) from a good source is better than lossless from a poor source. Lossless versions of "Tenement" and "Flick" from the same bad source will NOT sound any better ! I'm convinced most (if not all) people could not tell the difference between "lossless" and 192 mp3. A scientific survey would prove this with "blind" tests. The human power of self-deception is amazing ! ........ Please, Brian, Roger, BBC - release all BBC stuff before I die ......... |

Penetration_Guru wrote: link Bottom window is SYW from this torrent Top window is the mp3 (for personal use) from my mp3 player. Which one would you digital noise spotters prefer to be listening to?It depends on how good your mp3 sounds! I see what you're getting at. Naturally, a lossy copy of a first gen tape is going to sound better than a lossless copy of a fifth gen tape. But - a lossless copy of a first gen tape is better than a lossy copy of a first gen tape - because - if that lossy copy is burned to CD and converted to mp3 again, it will just get worse, whereas the lossless copy will maintain its quality no matter how many times it's converted to and from FLAC and WAV. That's the entire point of quality preservation. peckery wrote: Good quality mp3 (ie 192 or above) from a good source is better than lossless from a poor source.Of course! But if a lossy version of the better copy is available, then the lossless one must be available as well, since it had to be created from an original lossless source in the first place. Why be complacent when we can do better? I'm convinced most (if not all) people could not tell the difference between "lossless" and 192 mp3.You're probably right, but that's for converting something to mp3 the first time around. How much worse would it sound if you did it two or three more times? Would more people notice it then? |
Penetration_Guru 01.02.2008 01:26 |
I wasn't looking to make a case for mp3 - just illustrating that there must be better sources of this material. |

DuckSoup - thanks a lot !!! Olivier - I'm working on a "best of" compilation, simply putting together the absolutely best sources for all the tracks. The bad thing is that I'm actually doing this for approx. 10 years :-( When it will be 100% ready, I will maybe share or trade it (IF I'll be allowed to do it), but it will take a couple of month if not years :-( Marknow - thanks again for this share.
