The "easter egg" thread inspired me to open this topic and to list some of the legendary Queenzone hoaxes which were born on this forum. 1. The Hotspace BBC sessions were invented by Penetration_Guru. In a thread about the BBC sessions he mentioned them quite casually and literally everybody fell for it, mainly because it was the first real hoax. It took weeks until the collectors - rather unhappily - had to realise that the Hot Space BBC sessions only exist on the QZ forum 2. The Man In The Shadow album is the world famous John Deacon solo album. It was created by Queenzoner pma and confused generations of newbies. You are a hard core Queenzoner when you accept the existence of the Man In The Shadow album. Queenzoner Banquo took the hoax to the real life when he hung up an advert for the album on the English Fan Club convention link Once a newbie, who had fallen for the hoax, asked for a track list after he/she realised the hoax. The Queenzoners obliged and invented a beautiful track list - unfortunately I do not find the old thread. 3. The "River Of Blood Speech" is Freddie's famous speech on the Wembley 86 DVD. It was invented by Queenzoner Bohardy. Only hard core Queenzoners with a vivid imagination find this precious gem hidden on the DVD. 4. The "Live At The Bowl Easter Egg" was originally rather a joke by Queenzoner Brenski than a hoax but it grew to one of the most successful QZ hoaxes because it found its way to many other forums and Easter Egg websites. The hoax says that you have to press a certain key combination and the DVD will skip all Hot Space tracks. Funnily, many people seem to believe that excluding the Hot Space tracks is a real service for the owner of the DVD. 5. The "Ready Steady Cook" hoax was invented by Queenzoner Dudley_Fufkin and is the most successful hoax in the QZ hoax history. In July 2002 the following news item escaped the otherwise flawless QZ control (cough)and was posted on the news page: "A friend of mine who is a PA for bbc tv's Ready Steady Cook has mentioned to me that Brian May will be appearing on the bbc cookery show on the 9th July." Submitted by: Dirty Den The "Ready Steady Cook" show is (was?) a morning show on British TV and features has-beens who have no life and no career. While the Queenzoners hardly responded to this news item, the idea that Brian would appear on this show caused a riot on the QOL forums and led to numerous enquiries to the Fan Club and QOL. The Fan Club denied and finally Queen issued a press statement denying Brian's appearance on the show - something that Dudley had known from the start :) It was the only time that a QZ hoax led to an official reaction. |

Actually, I will fess up to a hoax news item I started under a different username back in 2004, which incidentally DID get mentioned on Brian's own website (and therefore I felt rather bad about for quite a while), although there was an ironic part to it in the end... I posted a news item saying that Paul Oakenfold had done a dance remix of "Invincible Hope" and that it was coming out in September of that year, which also ended up on QOL's page under 'Gossip' or something, and I even e-mailed Brian myself saying 'please say it ain't true' LMAO!!....and funnily enough, he DID respond to it in his soapbox saying it wasn't true, along the lines of "absolute rubbish" etc., ALTHOUGH to keep watch on his site for something coming up.... And that ended up being the 'One Year On' remix done by Queen themselves, for the 46664 One Year On EP released on iTunes. So there ya go :P Hopefully you guys can forgive me for that one. |

Very good topic. I do also recall a topic a couple of years ago saying that John was going to be appearing on a daytime BBC quiz show. The Sunbury 74 video toic went a bit quiet after a lot of interest too, and I think that turned out to be a wind up. Best hoaxes of all though are the ones from Greg Grooks stating that archive box sets will be released, that the 'I Want It All' memorabilia book will come out, that there is loads of great stuff in the archives dying to be released etc...! Although not originating here, don't forget that Brian May himself 'got us' with a couple of good ones when he said 1)that the originally planned Saturday Night Live tracks to be included as extras on the Rock Montreal DVD were going to be replaced with something far more exciting and worthwhile, and 2)that ANATO was going to be released in a SPECIAL 30th Anniversary Edition (rather than just being the same 5.1 mixes re-released with some old film footage of people twatting about on a beach in the 1920's). Priceless - must admit, I fell for these ones!! |
Bohardy 29.01.2008 08:00 |
Great stuff Barb. And nice to see that my small contribution to this field was remembered. To further what cmsdrums said, I'm sure it was (Olivia) DeaconJohn who started the hoax about John being on some daytime TV show. In fact, this hoax may have been even more successful than Dudley's, as I seem to recall that Q magazine ended up mentioning it. |
Bohardy 29.01.2008 08:00 |
... In fact, I think said daytime show was Through The Keyhole now I think about it. |

Funnily, many people seem to believe that excluding the Hot Space tracks is a real service for the owner of the DVD.I will admit that I just now found out that was a hoax. I saw it on some website or another (imdb.com, maybe?) before getting the DVD and filed it away in the back of my mind. I never had the heart to try the combo in hopes of removing the Hot Space tracks--doing so seemed like it would "violate" the concert in some way or another. To find out now that it was all a hoax perpetrated by Brenski is entertaining, embarassing, and a bit relieving. I had wondered why the hell the band would allow such an "Easter Egg" to slip onto their products. |

As pointed out by Bohardy, my John Deacon related wind up appeared in a special Queen edition of Q which was released in early 2005. I remember seeing it in a magazine shop in Belfast and having no intention of buying it. However I picked it up and had a flick through it, of course stopping to read the John Deacon section in detail. To say I was surprised to see some rubbish I'd written on the internet make it into Q magazine is something of an understatement. I still have the magazine; the quote is: "Much to Deacon watchers' chagrin, a rumoured appearence on TV's Through The Keyhole turned out to be entirely without substance". And here's a photo of it: link |

Mr Mercury wrote: Dont forget the 7 minute version of Bohemian Rhapsody, once shared by Zebonka...... HA! It might have seemed mean spirited to people at the time, but what few people acknowledged was that, nested in that mp3, was a part Face it Alone. It was the first time a snippet of that song had been shared in the Announce section in any shape or form! Of course, it was a little buried by slow-motion Bo Rhap, but you can't have everything and I didn't exactly have permission to be throwing my snippet around... Since the song came out later anyway, it's moot. Still, it felt good to be sharing AND pranking at the same time. |

pma 12.03.2009 17:32 |
I'd like to state that I most certainly did not originate the "Man in the Shadows"-prank. It was some guy on the late-great audiogalaxy.com website, who really pulled a good wind-up on the numpties who posted on that website. Someone asked about John's solo work and he posted a very detailed description of this particular album, describing different versions, one of them I recall was described as "includes a fold-out poster" etc. I did however do my share (along the likes of Friedchicken and numerous other funny zoners, who I believe came up with "Red Dirt" etc.) of fueling the reputation of this legend. |
