Check out the new copy of Performing musician. There is an interview with Brian's assistant Pete, he says Brian has used a Strat on the new album!! as he was searching for a specific sound that he couldn't get with the Red Special. Sounds interesting! For those that care it was a '54 body with a '55 neck, from Rogers collection. |

Yes, it's always an eve when Brian do it... ahahah |

Specific sound he couldn't find on the Red Special? Hell has indeed frozen over! I'm being facetious, there's more than a few sounds unique to the Strat - I just wonder which one in particular he's after. |

I would go with a solo or maybe one song. and that wouldnt be the first time: crazy little thing called love, nothing but blue. I cant see it being the entire album. |
Togg 03.01.2008 11:09 |
It certainly isn't the whole album !!! not sure where that came from? just a section of a song I'm sure. Pete was unsure it would work at first with (I assume) Brian's normal set up, but it would seem that it worked perfectly and sounded fantastic. It's an interesting interview, Pete's first job for Brian was to fix his son's scalextric set and then he went on to work on other wiring projects around the studio for Brian. Later he got to be Brian's assitant for a one off special show that Brian did where he needed to be on stage for just one song, after that the rest is history as they say. |

you gotta be careful with threads like this - a very quick glance at the title...and... "Brian used a strap on" ;-) |

Ah, he finally got rid of that piece of junk?! Btw: YES, Nothing but Blue was indeed an Ibanez. (The mirror-body prototype made for and given to him by Joe Satriani). Run through all of his regular setup, it still sounds very much Brian May-ish. I always find that with the more decent Ibanez-types you can come actually pretty close to Brian's sound. That sound is a lot more difficult to get with a Strat, though. This will realy sound different. |

A Parker Fly guitar is used on Mother Love, for the solo, too. |
Micrówave 07.01.2008 17:56 |
I'm beginning to think that Brian needs to re-focus on music, because he seems to be full of crap lately. "My normal rig—treble booster and AC30. When Queen tours with Paul Rodgers I don’t even play the Tele anymore. I can actually get pretty close to that sound with my guitar. It’s a lot of bother, taking guitars off and putting others on." "I think most people’s tone is actually in their fingers. I was quite shocked when I played with Hank Marvin. I always thought his tone was all about his guitar. He picked up my guitar and immediately it sounded like Hank Marvin. And I think we all have to expect that. There’s only so much we can do—it’s what’s in the fingers, the spirit, and the mind. I probably sound like me on any rig." Of course the Parker Fly sounds better than the Red Special. I think he uses other guitars a lot more than he says. |
Togg 08.01.2008 09:43 |
I don't see what your point is? surely it would be a bit of a pain to change guitars mid song unless you have too (CLTCL) Seems a pretty reasonable comment to me. And as for the tone coming from the fingers, well maybe not, but certainly your personal style will always come though in the same way you will drive two cars in the same way. Playing any instrument is about expression which comes from within. I don't see why you are getting hot under the collar about his comments, they don't seem to be a problem |

Don't see that as a jab, though; it's just late and I feel like giving up on the written word sometimes. |
Micrówave 08.01.2008 13:15 |
Well, this whole "Brian used a Strat" thread. I don't think that's anything shocking. I think he's used 'em on nearly every album.
Plus Roger's got a supposed "rare" guitar. Big deal. Unless someone really knows for sure and where on which song, I just don't see the point of an announcement, that's all.
Here's some sarcasm, I did mean to include some...
Roger used a LP Cabasa on the new album.
Togg wrote: I don't see what your point is? surely it would be a bit of a pain to change guitars mid song unless you have too (CLTCL)I don't think he was referring to mid-song. I've never heard of anyone doing that unless they're a freak or something. But then read on. Brian says he can pretty much achive the Telecaster tone with his Red Special. That's just crap, sorry. Your pickups are totally different, Brian. You want further proof of Brian's total nonsense? When asked how to get the WWRY tone, he replies: "The funny thing about that tone is, I can’t reproduce it. The only way I can is with the DigiTech Red Special pedal that I developed with Eddie Kramer—they modeled that sound."You can almost hear the "cha-ching" in the background when you read that. Yeah I'll be watching for that Digishit when they roll out on tour again. I'm sure it'll be prominently displayed. (Insert 'cha-ching' sound again) But used? Please! |
john bodega 08.01.2008 23:48 |
Ouch.... can't believe Brian said that. Ha-ha. As if he can't reproduce that tone in half an hour. :/ I've seen a guy on Youtube, no Digitech pedal involved at all, and he did it fine. I have to say; reproducing a Tele sound for CLTCL would not be high on my list of priorities in a live environment. The song sounds completely different when they've done it live. It goes all stadium rock; so it really doesn't make any difference what he plays. |

So you've never seen him play CLTCL live then? As for announcing the fact he has used a Strat, well, considering Brian is known for almost consitantly using his guitar I thought it was news worthy, sorry, but I still think this is a more approporiate thread than 98% of what seems to be here these days, would you rather have topics about Where is John Deacon? |

Come now Togg, no need to be antagonised. You've got a point; Microwave has a point. (Sorry, I'm in a Gandhi mood) |

Tell us what song! Which part! Not just some generic info. Of course Brian used a Strat! Did we have a press release when he used the Parker? It has been a while since we've talked about the whereabouts of Emma's stalker, though. |
