SPOKANE -- Spokane Police are investigating a possible assault on Santa Claus.
A Spokane firefighter, dressed as St. Nick, was hit in the face this weekend while spreading holiday cheer.
The neighborhood just east of Gonzaga is where someone appears to have thrown something at Santa, hitting him in the face and knocking him out Saturday night.
Off-duty Spokane firefighter Kevin Smith was riding in local 29's Santa float.
The firefighter union has driven the float around Spokane neighborhoods the past 30 years playing music and handing out candy to kids.
Saturday evening, Smith was dressed as Santa when someone threw something at him, hitting him in the face and knocking him unconscious.
Smith says he can't remember a thing.
The two other firefighters driving the truck only realized Santa was assaulted when they looked in the rear view mirror and saw him bleeding and slumped to one side of the sleigh.
His wife took him to the hospital where they determined Smith suffered a concussion and a broken nose. He may need surgery to fix the damage.
Smith say he was blindsided and didn't see whatever hit him coming.
"None of us know. There were three of us and nobody saw anybody throw something -- a rock or something else hard and it hit me in the face and knocked me out," Smith said.
Smith says he can't understand why anyone would attack him. If you have any information regarding the attack, call Spokane Police or Fire.
So it has come to this, eh? The funniest part of this story to me, and some of you won't be suprised, I was born and raised in Spokane Washington!!!
