The final four bands will each perform a song by Queen plus one original song tonight (Friday, Dec. 7 at 9 pm on Fox). link
I found a spoiler blog entry from a person who went to the taping. link
Apparently, the Queen songs will be:
The Clark Brothers: "These Are The Days of Our Lives"
Light of Doom: "We Will Rock You"
Sixwire: "Fat Bottomed Girls"
Denver and The Mile High Orchestra: "Sleeping on the Sidewalk"
Anyway, for those of you who don't or can't watch the show, it is like American Idol for bands. Sheila E. is one of the judges, and there is a Goo Goo Doll judge (John Rzeznik) and then a guy called "Dicko".
I could have sworn I saw Roger Taylor in the audience a couple of weeks ago and was wondering if they would have a Queen night. So, I was very glad they announced that Queen would be the next band that everyone would perform songs from.
The Clark Brothers are the most entertaining to me. They are good at arranging songs and performing them even though they are basically a bluegrass band. Their singer Ashley is the star.
Light of Doom are all about 12 or 13 years old and I think they are a favorite with the audience. One of them said Tommy Lee was his influence.
Sixwire is a country band and Denver and the Mile High Orchestra is a big band.
I'm really looking forward to hearing the arrangements tonight. I just wish they had included a song by Freddie Mercury.

So they'd sound even worse than they inevitably will? American Idol-types have proven time and again that they cannot handle Queen songs. Even the simpler compositions by Brian tend to reveal their lack of vocal range and power.
Apart from the poor WWRY I was really impressed by these cover versions.
Days of Our Lives & Sleeping on the Sidewalk were especially good, and most unexpected.
So much better than the Idol Queen show.

I totally agree. I guess the best song for me was Sleeping on the Sidewalk (Denver and the Mile High Orchestra). For one thing, I couldn't get over that I was hearing it performed on broadcast TV in this country. Ha. And they did a really good job.
And I always like the Clark Brothers when they do the covers (These Are The Days of Our Lives).
For the original songs, I guess Sixwire did the best (but I'm not a country music fan in general). And their sound bothers me because they have so many guitars, it is just too much and you can't hear any definition.
Edit: I changed my mind about Light of Doom when I watched it for a second time. They were pretty good!

Well, that's just me. I would probably get excited to hear Killer Queen being played on the Easy Listening radio station in the dentist's waiting room. I guess for the holiday season they could have a version with just bells?

eh...I thought the complete opposite. I thought that the Idol Queen show was much better (some of it) an I hated last night's performances. The only one I thought was ok was These Are the Days of Our Lives. The rest, weren't any good, plus they messed up the lyrics in Fat Bottomed Girls. All of them really had country spin on them that I didn't like. I was looking foward to seeing that other band that went hom perfom, but no luck. Anyway, those smaller kids band was terrible with We Will Rock You...I don't even think they should be in the competition.

I agree. TATDOOL was good but the rest was crap. Idol was much better. I thought I was watching CMT instead of Fox. Way too much country garbage. I think the only reason those long haired poser kids are in the competition is because Fox needed some younger people on the show.

Also shocking was to see part of an interview with Freddie on American broadcast TV. Amazing!
I think the set up in the beginning with the Queen montage was pretty good. I especially liked it that they played Killer Queen during this part and mentioned that each of the members had written a song that went to the top of the charts.
Remember that little kid with the red shirt who got angry when the judges didn't like Light of Doom's version of We Will Rock You? link
I can't find this on Youtube, so until I figure out how to put stuff on Youtube myself ... here is the opening of the show:
[Background music is the beginning of "We Will Rock You" - (stomp stomp clap) - and the background screen shows that iconic photo of the four of them with the shadows on their face and Freddie with his hands crossed over his chest.]
Host: "Tonight, we will rock you as your favorite bands play the music of Queen."
[Introduction of host, bands, and judges.]
Host: "Right, well we have a big show tonight. It's - all four will be performing two songs each: one they write themselves, and another by Queen, one of the greatest rock bands of all time."
[video of Freddie interacting with the crowd]
Freddie and crowd: "Everything's gonna be all right ... right ... right ... right".
["Killer Queen" plays in the background and concert video footage and stills are shown.]
Host: "Since Queen began, audiences around the world have grabbed hold of their music, even sending them to the top of the UK album charts for over thirteen hundred weeks - more than any other music act in history, including The Beatles and Elvis Presley. Every member of Queen is credited with having written more than one chart topping single each."
[Freddie talking while sitting at a table]
Freddie: "At the moment, there's a lot within Queen that - that we all can do ... as long as we don't take it so seriously; we should try and inject some fun into it, you know?"
Host: "In 2003, Queen became the first, and remain the only, band in history to be inducted into the Song Writers' Hall of Fame. And in rehearsals this week, our bands were going to great lengths to get the music of Queen just right."
[Interview with the Clark Brothers (nothing about Queen - just about adding some musician friends this week from Nashville, including a drummer).]
[Interview with singer from Dot Dot Dot in rehearsal room:]
Dot Dot Dot singer: "Nobody has ever been able to be Freddie. [We hear somebody singing while they rehearse "Don't Stop Me Now".] If you're a front man and you're getting up there and you want the crowd, you are influenced by Freddie in some way. We were all really excited to hear that it was Queen Week."
