I finally got my copy of Montreal/Live Aid here in New Zealand. Now, because I also have the official Live Aid DVD box, I was surprised to see that on several occasions the angles are different on the Montreal DVD.
In saying that, the Live Aid Box is still a nice item to have, because it has some Fashion Aid footage, different Queen angles compared to the Montreal DVD and Freddie singing with the others during Band Aid Finale. I'm not a collector who wants to have anything and everything, but there's still a lot of bits and pieces on the Live Aid box which are not on the Montreal DVD, I reckon. The most obvious example being Freddie dancing with the camera man, which you can see from different angles on both releases.
I know this is maybe not worthy of a discussion and maybe belongs in the general forum, but I thought I'd post it.
Does anyone know which version actually aired on TV then?!? Are there any liner notes in the Montreal DVD saying why it's different? (I know record companies never give details people actually want to know like that but it's worth a shot....)
Ages ago I saw a Freddie tribute thing that was compiled from different footage, mainly Magic Years stuff (started with Elton John saying something, wearing a black cap with green writing on it). They also used Live Aid footage in that tribute, and I remember that you could see Freddie dancing with the camera man from outside the scene (if you know what I mean). On the official Live Aid box, I think, you see it from the camera point of view of that particular guy, so you wouldn't really know why Freddie points at him with his thumb right after. I could be wrong about this though. Anyway, this makes me presume that the first angle was the actual TV footage. But maybe a collector around here could actually say more about this. For example I wouldn't have noticed that the shots at the start of Now I'm Here on the Montreal DVD are actually a repeat of the beginning of the show just to avoid having the sound with a black screen until SirGH pointed that out. So...let's see.
As far as I can see and compare with my old videotapes The Live Aid box is similar
to the TV broadcast. Freddie was just fooling around with the cameraman as he was trying to follow him on the stage. He was I guessed amused
by what he did to the cameraman.
