So why do they only mix their live DVD's in 4.1 ?
What's wrong with them using the centre speaker ?
Freddie's voice should be sat coming from the centre speaker..
Their surround mix is consist's of stereo front and a bit of audience in the back speakers..
I have over £6000 of surroung sound equipment and the likes of Pink Floyd,Rush,Eagles blow the Queen DVD surround sound away..
I just picked up the Montreal DVD and it does seem to be mixed as stereo across the front, with discrete surrounds.
I can see your point, especially when it comes to DVDs like GVH1 & 2, but I can also understand that the surround mix on Montreal is probably truer to hearing an actual concert.
Justin Shirley Smith explained this somewhere on Brian's site. It's HIS preference. HE doesn't like sounds (especially vocal) coming from the center channel, so he removes the ability for anyone else to have sound there.
The logical solution would be to use the center channel, and leave it up to the listener as to whether or not to use it, as most receivers have the ability to mix the center into the left & right. HE has taken away this choice and decided to FORCE HIS preference upon the listener, whilst simultaneously making Queen's surround mixes a joke and confusing listeners, even to the point of some thinking their DVDs were defective.
Fortunately a few proper 5.1 mixes have slipped through though, including ROTC and the DVD-Audio discs.
Well said !
Supposed it will give then the chance to re-release then again in a year or 2 in proper 5.1
Just to make sure they get some extra cash in for the future ,,
One thing is for sure.. If Freddie was around they would have had no choice but to put his vocals in the centre speaker !! He would have made sure of it
