Just downloaded the first rar file, checked the flac files, all lossy, thought I'd let everyone know. Nice share tigger, but whether you knew it was lossy or not, you should always do a check before uploading a show and passing it off as flac. |

Lossless... check... ? What's that? We at Queenzone don't subscribe to your mixture of quality standards and logic. |

Do we need more proof that sharing mp3 files is bad? This is exactly what happens: 1 Once it was a lossless file 2 Then it was encoded to MP3 (for personal use, e.g.) 3 Then somebody shared it in MP3 format 4 Somebody downloaded it and burned it to a cd-r ( –> decoding to WAV) 5 Then somebody ripped the audio from the cd and encoded it to FLAC 6 Then someone shared it here, not knowing it was MP3 before Run this cycle one or two more times and we have crappy distorted soundfiles of no value. |

Sharing mp3s disguised as flac is worse than just uploading regular mp3 files. Other unknowing users would think that this is lossless and pass it off as such, and eventually would make its way into the trading community and the true lossless version would be lost forever. Every other music sharing board on the internet would have pulled this down the first time they were shared as mp3 and thus stopping the problem that we have here. I am part of a wider trading community and I don’t understand why so many other queen fans don’t get it or don’t want to get it that any sharing of lossy files is bad. |

But for the record, you'd be eating your words if you knew what I did for a living. I feel that I have accomplished much in 25 years, and that my life is far from insignificant. Not that you deserve an explanation, especially after judging me as a person, based on posts on a forum where people share unofficial recordings. I share here because I promote quality preservation and spreading recordings as such. You are simply one of the few people who don't understand that, and feel the need to resort to personal attacks rather than trying to grasp what people like myself have been talking about here (and at virtually all other major 'unofficial music' sharing websites) for years. Just curious... why did *you* of all people share FLAC? Note that you ended up calling me "Sir" in the same paragraph where you said you wouldn't. Maybe I should also note that the "Sir" in my name is from when a bunch of us decided to knight ourselves for fun, rather than being some egotistical statement that you assume it is. Get over yourself, please. |
josedequeso 26.09.2007 01:33 |
We shouldn't ban him, in my short couple of months on Queenzone he has provided me with many laughs, whether it is his comical "go fuck yourself" remarks to anyone who challenges him, or any of the other childish name calling he employs. So nobody saw that I was being condescending in my first post in this thread? I am referring to my use of tigger (an American cartoon character, sidekick to the loveable Winnie the Pooh) rather than his real moniker “tiger”, (which is a ferocious animal) I will await my “go fuck yourself”, tigger. |

In defence of Tiger. The guy has shared more gigs here over the years than most people. OK most of them are MP3, but that doesnt detract from his generosity. Fact is, there is STILL demand for them as his feedback shows. Who's to say people arent downloading them just for their iPods? There is no law against sharing MP3. The Houston I shared even had lossy sound which probably wouldnt have made it on to some trading sites. The arguement saying it was rare so OK to share in lossy just doesnt wash, as what's rare to some is common to others. I'm not suprised he's pissed off. |

What is this fuzz all about? You are ignoring (and attacking) people who prefer lossless shares. That's maybe your opinion. But you see what happens when MP3 sourced shows circulate in the trading scene. Mp3 sourced flac's are the worst thing I can imagine. These shows are historical documents and should handled with care! You know Fritz Lang's Metropolis? This Movie was made in 1926 and was copied & re-cut over and over thrue the years. After extencive research the movie was remastered and cut back to his original form, at least the footage who survived! 1/3 of this classic is forever lost, just because some people never cared about quality and preservation. It's 2007 and we have the technology to preserve these recordings in their original form. No other trading site accept MP3 shares these days, it is not your fault that things are different at QZ. But you can do something to make this place a littler more "grown up" and that's not to tell people to fuck themselfs or share lossy sourced material.... |

pow wow wrote: In defence of Tiger. The guy has shared more gigs here over the years than most people. OK most of them are MP3, but that doesnt detract from his generosity.Note that it's far easier to share a show in mp3, because it takes far less time to upload it. Also note that he has not edited any of his recordings or created compilations to give the best version possible. He simply downloaded and reshared. Sharing mp3s should not deserve much credit in today's world of quality preservation. You're right, there is no law against mp3, but we should be doing our best to preserve the quality of these precious recordings, not make them worse than they already are. Honestly, converting an old recording to mp3 is like a historian handling ancient papyrus with dirty hands. A high quality Houston is one of those things that people had been after for ages, and most people would be willing to make an exception if the only possibility was a lossy share. Since lossy sharing is permitted on this site, I think the only time it should be done, for the sake of quality preservation, is when there is no alternative. The major problem with mp3s (as I've stated many times before) is that there are collectors (some of whom I have dealt with myself) who refuse to share their rare and uncirculated Queen recordings because they don't want them to be converted to mp3 - which they are confident will happen here. This place is notorious for being the place where people upload mp3s passed off as FLAC files. So, here we are with yet another version of the second night in Fukuoka '79 in lossy FLAC, when we could perhaps have had a new show from the '76 US tour by now. I have done my research. Out of all the major bands, Queen has had the fewest number of new unofficial recordings emerge in the last ten years. This place is largely to blame. If Queenzone adopted quality standards, Queen collectors would start to gain respect in the wider collecting world, something which at the moment we have little of, if any at all. Yes, there is a collecting world outside of this website. Many downloaders still think these new recordings magically pop out of the sky. Keeping in mind that FLAC can easily be converted to WAV and then mp3 for personal use, all I ask is for someone to provide a good explanation why lossy sharing shouldn't be banned - with exceptions like your Houston, which is still perhaps the greatest share in the history of this forum. |

If we're just talking exclusively about 'download collectors' then there is still the issue of connection speeds to be resolved. There are still, unbelievably, those who still use dial-up and have virtually no choice as to deal in MP3. I do not believe that collectors who have uncirculated material will not share on the basis of it being converted to MP3. Why? If we are all budding amateur Queen archivists/preservationists then a newly circulated FLAC gig is not going to become extinct a few years down the line. Unlike a painting by the artist Monet for example, we can reproduce new one's. That concert will always exist somewhere in it's original format. I can totally understand it makes finding the original much more difficult though. I just think it's a very convenient excuse NOT to share. Why don't we ask Barbara/Richard to put it to the test. Ban all lossy from tomorrow say and let's see how many new gigs we get. |

But we're not there right now, so that view isn't relevant just yet. But I assure you, there are people who are sitting on recordings because of the lack of quality standards here. A couple of them don't want to have anything to do with Queen collectors ever again. Just go to Bootcity, Dime, Yeeskuhl, Zomb, and TTD and simply look at the discussions people have there about their recordings. They are leagues ahead of this place, and there are constantly new recordings to show for it. These people were having the mp3-flac debates about 5 years ago. Any mention of mp3 on those websites will get you banned for life. Then go to the guitars101 forum, and look at what a mess that place is. People download the lossless files from the above websites and convert them to mp3. That website has caused people to stop sharing their gems. It's not just Queen collectors who are suffering. Why don't we ask Barbara/Richard to put it to the test. Ban all lossy from tomorrow say and let's see how many new gigs we get.The damage is probably already done. Aside from that, these kinds of results could take months to years to show. People would slowly come to realize what's happening here, and over time, they may trust that the community as a whole is pro-lossless. Nothing can be promised. But it would be a step in the right direction. |

pow wow wrote: Why don't we ask Barbara/Richard to put it to the test. Many people have asked for that, not sure why it's not happening. That new forum needs proper moderation though, which means that sources like this one that turn out to be casette > CD > mp3 > WMA >.... > mp3 > FLAC need to be pulled asap. Many people download this one without reading the discussion thinking it was a true lossless seed, while in fact it's just a waste of space. |

But I'm afraid two seperate announce sections will cause only more trouble. Someone shares a (new)lossless show and a couple of days later the same show will be shared in the MP3 section...only if the rules are : No lossless shows allowed to re-share as MP3. But as long as some people in here don't understand (or care) about this, the only way will be to ban MP3 sharing for the future. I hope it will happen someday... |
