The topic title is a warm nod to Assdude's comment on the other thread made by Adolfo (Well done, Assdude!) Any way, I thought this could be the place where we say what country/city/state we are from. I come from..... Eh, I lived in Ruest, Mecklenburg in Germany until I was two years old and moved to the USA. But I was born in Tarnow, Mecklenburg. :D And you all? |

Wakefield, New Zealand. Population: 2000. First settled: 1848. Location: 40 mins drive from nearest city. Setting: Semi-rural with dairy farms. Number of shops: 15. Typical local attire: High-Viz bushgear. What we do for fun: Eat pizza, go to the pub, car boot sales. Affiliated gangs: Wakefield Warriors; bunch of 13-15 year olds who ride around on their pushbikes and try to look tough. Facinating fact: Everyone drives SUV's and 4WD's and they are actually used to go offroad and are covered in mud *gasp!* Interesting locals: Marrion, a resident of the resthome. She walks around the streets taking pictures of peoples houses and then puts them in your letterbox. Some think she is actually a spy for their landlord. |

I live in Mainz, Germany but was born in a smaller town about 50 km away. Mainz is a state capital and is located right on the Rhine River. The city was founded by the Romans. It's a bishop's residence with a 1000 year old cathedral. Most famously, Mainz is one of three centers of carnival (Koeln and Duesseldorf are the others) which means that the city is taken over for the whole month of February by the carnival clubs. The most famous son of Mainz is Johannes Gutenberg who invented mechanical printing with movable types - although Jeroen claims printing was invented by a Dutch person :) Mainz has a 20 000 student university and about as many churches. Next to the cathedral the gothic church St Stephan is the biggest attraction due to eight church windows created by French Jewish artist Marc Chagall in the 1970s/80s as a symbol of German-Jewish reconciliation. |

Wow YV....it sounds beautiful! :-) Myself, I was born in Lansing, Michigan, US **ducks flying debris**. Lived there until I was two, and then moved to Clinton, Iowa with my parents. Lived there till I was sixteen, then moved back to Greenville, Michigan where my parents and sister currently still live. I now live in Mount Pleasant Michigan, home of Central Michigan University and the Soaring Eagle Casino and resort, and nothing else. Seriously, you get outside of the city and it's nothing but cows and corn as far as the eye can see. But the benefit of the Casino being here is that they do bring in great concerts that wouldn't normally come to this area. The campus of CMU is very pretty. Takes about twenty minutes to walk from one side to the other, so fairly small but pretty none the less. The brand new library is beautiful, and I spend most of my time there and Powers Hall, one of the oldest buildings on campus and serves as the History building. Powers is connected to Warriner Hall, which is a beautiful Victorian/gothic style building complete with bell tower. That building houses the administrative offices, but it's fun to just look at too. I'm in Mt Pleasant until May of next year, and then I'm off again. Don't know where to, but hopefully I'll figure that out soon. |

HistoryGirl - I could have mentioned industrial parts of the city and poorer quarters and the picture would be more realistic. Somehow you automatically talk about the things that make your city different, which are thankfully nice things in my city. |

All cities have undesirable areas, but generally you don't promote them when talking about your city, unless you are a politician/activist trying to clean it up. I could have mentioned bad areas of Lansing or Michigan in general, (Detroit for example) but anyone who has seen 8 Mile knows what that is...no more promotion of that hell hole is needed. Every city has it's good and bad areas. I still think your city sounds beautiful, as most European cities are I've found. You take the good with the bad. Marko, the student we have here from Germany says his country is beautiful, and I believe him. He's from the University of Jena (from what I understand it's in central Germany) |
