Last night my wife and I went to see the New York Philarmonic conducted by John Williams, and let me tell you that even though I've never been to a Classical music concert I was amazed by the whole magic this man has put into his music scores.
The show included some of John Williams most famous scores from movies like Jaws, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Memoirs of a Geisha, and E.T., along with a tribute to the special guest Stanley Donen, who directed many musicals like 'Singin' In The Rain' and worked with Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire.
I was a bit disappointed that there weren't any 'Star Wars' songs aside from the Main Theme. I was really looking forward to hear 'The Imperial March'.
So is anyone else here into film music scores?
I'm pretty big on film music.... the standouts for me (apart from Star Wars, heh) would be Shawshank Redemption, the 1938 version of Robin Hood, Lawrence of Arabia.... they all have fantastic scores.
The man is a genius. Granted, he's no Mozart by any means, but as far as hooks go - genius. He consistently writes theme after theme, each more memorable than the next.
Essentially, I guess he's a "pop" composer. A "hooker," you might say.
He continues to surprise me... his work for Harry Potter was boring in the extreme, patched together from Phantom Menace leftovers & the Darth Vader theme. But there was a film he did music for in the last five or so years, maybe ten... and fuck I can't remember what movie it was, but it was frigging awesome.
And, to whoever asked - yeah, I post on OriginalTrilogy.com sometimes. Mainly to rip the shit out of bad fan-edits of Star Wars. Hehe.
Ennio Morricone did for Westerns what John Williams did for Sci-fi & Adventure flicks.
I loved Morricone's score for 'Cinema Paradiso', which was far from different from anything he's done before.
