I just saw an episode of Scrubs on tv that ended with Under Pressure. But I could swear it was some sort of different mix. Drums and Piano sounded much more crisp. The song was obviously reedited for the episode, but the mix just sounded different. Anyone know anything about this? Maybe the Hollywood new mix or something? |
Dane 05.09.2007 17:55 |
Hollywood Records that is of course.. |

Could have been EQed to sound good through a shitty TV speaker... |

There is something that came up about Under Pressure a while back and the quality issue. The US Hollywood records version on "Classic Queen" is a lot nicer than the standard mix that is distributed elsewhere. Unfortunately, I lost the copy I had a while back and can't say exactly why it was better. But I do remember that it was clearer and maybe a little more noise free. It was truly nicer sounding than the normal album version. Anyone have a sample? Adam. |

I agree Classic Queen version of Under Pressure is the best mix of all the versions available, in fact the whole album has a better sound quality than the GH equivalent. Hammer to Fall sounds superb on this album too. |
Dane 06.09.2007 04:41 |
Yes, just too bad they chopped up the Miracle so much to fit on the album. :) I'll try to post a sample of Under Pressure of that release later today.. |

If you want to invite the wrath of God, then go right ahead, just don't say you weren't warned when fire ansd brimstone is falling on you. |

Cute. Except for the fact that there are plenty of hypocrites that talk of this sacred rule, yet, break it when they feel it suits them. Don't know about you, btw. But if someone can upload an entire dvd of something that's in the shops (right now), but doesn't get pulled up for it because it's "not official material". How is that fair? I make dvd's for my theatre group and if someone copied it, I'd be pissed. It's that simple. The rule stinks when it doesn't cover things you can still buy, but DOES cover a 10 year old PC game that can only be found 2nd hand. Bootlegs being the exception to the rule. Naturally. Adam. |

That is the Mike Spencer Mix. Always liked that one much better compared to the original mix. It is close to the original, just better mixed. Same that was done with some songs of Free, there is a Greatest Hits compilation out, with "remixed" versions, sounds much better and clearer than the original versions. |

The Mike Spencer mix is just that, a different mix entirely. In fact, isn't that the one with Brian and Roger's new recordings from 1999? The Classic Queen mix is a clearer and nicer sounding edit of the album mix. Though, I'm not sure about how it came about. Wish I could find that trainspotting page. I think it had the info about it on there. Adam. |

The alternate mix of Under Pressure was made by David Richards in late 1991 or early 1992. Suposedly, it was conceived to be a bonus track on a kind of '10th Anniversary Edition' of HOT SPACE. The album was indeed remastered and even released in that form in 1992 with a small note in the backsleeve claiming 'digitally re-mastered'. Apart from CLASSIC QUEEN, the mix has surfaced in several compilations, including some Bowie's. There is also a US re-edit of the video (due to copyright of the used footage being still valid in the USA) that features it. |

Could you please elaborate on that Hot Space release and the UP mix? You are not refering to the Hollywood Records release (HR-61038-2) are you? I am also curious about that re-edited video... The remix is on Classic Queen and unlabeled (and on one of the Bowie comps). It's very similar to the original so most people don't even notice. The Hot Space CD has the original mix, but it also has a bonus remix at the end of the disc, though I can't remember if this is the same as the Classic Queen mix. One of the parts on the Classic Queen mix where the different mix shows is when they're singing "Caring about ourselves"...you can hear Roger singing more than on the original. |

Other than the standard Album version, here are the versions I know of: Greatest Hits II Edit: same as the album, but cuts out the second "This is our last dance" in the finale. Quite noticable as you sing along and it's not there! This is also on on the OOP "David Bowie: The Singles 1969-1993" double CD release. Classic Queen Mix: Punchier drums and overall cleaner sound. The vocal for "That's okay!" is gone, but the music is still there. Karaoke Mix: The album version almost entirely instrumental, except for the finale, where Bowie's vocal comes. And only one finger snap ends the song. Mike Spencer Mix: The claps and finger snaps are absent at the beginning, some of the backing elements are re-arrangd nicely, and the drums and guitars are heavier. Not radically different, but very noticable Rah Mix: Best decribed as an almost completely new version, with new backing throughout and a unique opening vocal with Freddie and David. Rah Mix Radio Edit: An edit of the Rah Mix, lacking the "You said New York..." opening vocal. Club 2000 Mix: A sort of "Extended" version of the edit, also lacking the opening vocal and some of the regular vocal throughout. Knebworth Mix: A live version rather than a remix, this is from Queen's last performance of the Magic Tour (1986), at Knebworth Park, making it the last time the four of them performed this song live. David Bowie Live B-Side Version: No Queen involvement, but just as valid. From his "Hallo Spaceboy" single, recorded during his "Outside" tour. |

It has the same catalogue number as the 1987 EMI release and no bonus track at all. The alternate video of Under Pressure can be found in several promo tapes and also in a Korean VCD and also a recent DVD (both copy the contents of a Hollywood Records promo 'Rockumentary' VHS). Did the single edit this out? I still have my 45 so whenever I get a chance I'm going to check. Or maybe the We Will Rock You concert video doesn't have that extra line either. |

I was by chance listening to a 12 year old GHII cd and was caught out by the missing "Last dance" line. It's been so long since hearing that cd. Adam. |

I've asked about a definitive list of mixes of this before, and no one seems to want to focus their energies on that. There is a GH version, probably a couple of Hot Space versions (LP-CD-singles). The 45 sounds different than my album version. Roger's voice is way up in the mix in the Classic Queen version, for example, and of course the existence and non existence of "People on the streets." We can put up samples online, people. It's called fair use. Anyone ever listen to samples on Amazon or other places? Same principle. There's details to this, but it has to be a certain fraction of the complete work, etc. Jim Beach isn't going to come after ya for one mp3 file of a "people on the streets" refrain. |
Leaky Luke 08.09.2007 10:47 |
In theory, only 10 % of a track may be used (American Laws) no matter what format it is in. |
Wilki Amieva 08.09.2007 12:30 |
Firstly, the link it's obviously to official material. That needs no clarification! Please remove. Secondly, the minor edit of Under Pressure in GH2 and also in several other compilations was made specially by David Ricards in 1991 along with other minor edits/early fades to most of GH2 tracks to 'fit' them all in the CD. Finally, the single has the same version as the album version. |

My 7" single (45 RPM) doesn't sound any different and there's no account of any original 1981 "Under Pressure" single containing any other mix, version or edit. Keep in mind, everyone, the ear can play tricks on your when you switch between formats (vinyl, cassette, CD, etc.), sometimes sounding flatter or in a slightly different pitch. These are not alternate versions, simply victims of different equipment processing the information. It doesn't matter how new or old the equipment is, these things will happen. |
