Respectfully borrowing Justin's Leiter's concept of 'OPEN LETTER TO GREG BROOKS' for a moment, from a few days ago.... [and by the way I have now returned Justin's treasured Mott tour prog in the post]... I could have written a private email direct to John SS, as i have previously, but I thought again and concluded that keeping it open and public might have benefits. Also, private emailing between J and I also reached a heated and abrupt end last time, so probably re-attempting that isn't wise. First, though, let me say this. I'm not going to apologise for not getting along nicely with John SS. We do not play nicely together like we might in an HG Wells-type idyllic Utopian world. That's never going to happen because we are just TOO different in our personalities. Like the great Bruce Hornsby once said, 'Some things'll never change. That's just the way it is.' I did not originally set out to be hostile to John, or discourteous, or to have homicidal tendences in reaction to some things he said and wrote. Actually I set out with the intention (as I ALWAYS do when I meet new people) of having a good and friendly, and, more importantly, productive relationship. It just did not go that way. It takes two to fall out, but it seems that I get most of blame for that - which i can live with. When I first met Dutch collector and Queen videos/footage expert Frank Palstra, and other Queen people like Hannie, Walter, Rinus, Miklos, Endre, Jim Stevenson, Jim Jenkins, Luke Mullens, John Steinen, Gary Taylor, Adam Unger, Gary Nolan, Andreas Voigts, Paul Bird, Andrew Read, Helmut, and so on, EQUALLY I did not set out to make good friends with them... friendship, rapport, comfortable enjoyable and rewarding interraction just happened naturally, like it most often does. Nothing profound in that, it's how it normally is because I like a quiet friendly life in my personal domain - but not necessarily so on QZ, as you know well!!!!! I don't generally regard internet forums as the 'real' world. My relationships, if you want to call it that, here, are not representative at all of those I enjoy here in my real day-to-day world. I guess and hope it's the same for all of you. My intention with people, including John, and everyone else, is to get along and have a good time - make life better easier not worse. There is very little in life nicer or more rewarding than great friends. Frank Palstra, for example, has become a close and valued friend since I first met him in the Dutch fan club market and swapped items with him (7 years ago), and others too, and that is wonderful. I have not wanted to strangle Frank once!! :-) However, it cannot be that way with everyone. You tend to give everyone the same chance, as you hope they will you too, but sometimes you just CLASH. You clash a bit, a little, slightly maybe, or massively. With John, speaking with him on the phone for some reason became extremely trying and frustrating like you cannot imagine, and like I never in a hundred years predicted because it had never happened before - or since, to be honest. I know he feels more or less the same way so this isn't an insult - merely an account of facts. If you have a pet dog you will know that, inexpicably, that dog will, suddenly and without warning, take great exception to maybe only ONE person in its lifetime. It heckles (hackles???) on its back will go up, it will snarl mysteriously and totally out of character, and it will will NEVER get on with that person. There is no really great scientific reason... just a clash of something - a strange incompatability. It is inexplicable but also indisputable. JSS and GB are not unlike this, it seems to me. I like people. I like people a LOT. I have lots of time for lots of people and I get along with 99.9% of those I interract with. It might shock you to Hell, some of you here on QZ, but actually I have some fabulous friends - and many of them are in the Queen circle. I tried very hard |

Oh God, please free us from this megalomaniac. |
pittrek 04.09.2007 10:05 |
Glad to know you can be sometimes nice and friendly, Greg. And I really hope 1) John will sell or lend QP his master tapes 2) QP will buy it from him 3) QP will release it (the best way would be together with the 6 studio BBC sessions and Hammersmith Odeon 75, but I guess that I would want too much). |
John S Stuart 04.09.2007 10:14 |
'...Sibelius Stuart...'? Was there any call or need for that? You know it's not my name. You know it's not funny. Why send out an olive branch - if you still wish to be disrespectful? What is the point in that? But, I am not a child. I can rise above that. I am here, I have not moved. My e-mail address is public. However, I do not think I need hawk my wares around like some second-hand car salesman. I grow tired and weary of the whole tedious affair. If anyone from QPL did come 'a-knocking' - I would be here. Do not let it be said that I am the one who stands in the way of progress. However, I still think the Sibelius dig was beneath you. |
Cwazy little thing 04.09.2007 10:17 |
Sounds like fair play to me, and I hope for the sake of having a professionally remastered/cleaned up etc official release of Golder's Green that this works out. :) |
Cwazy little thing 04.09.2007 10:24 |
Looks like that reply got in just before mine. Greg - wont QP just get in touch and offer to buy it if he says he has it? Why the need for him to produce a proposal - just out of pure curiosity? I think, considering the potential of this recording as the earliest good quality Queen one out there, and its historical value, both for the band and the fans, its worth the Queen side of the bargain making the first move by contacting him officially. Then again - Im incredibly biased; I just want it officially released! Hope you guys sort it out. |
Togg 04.09.2007 10:40 |
Leaving aside the background to this (please God) sounds like a plan to me, why not go for it? or has all the talk been just talk on both sides? |
Queen Archivist 04.09.2007 11:33 |
To JSS... '...Sibelius Stuart...'? Was there any call or need for that? You know it's not my name. You know it's not funny. Why send out an olive branch - if you still wish to be disrespectful? What is the point in that? GB: Where is your sense of humour John???? Jesus! It was FUN.. You remember what fun is, yes?????? It's like smashing one's head against a brick wall, reaching you. Equally painful too. GB: Sibelius was simply the first thing of thought of as a middle for you that begun with an 'S'. Could have been Susan or Steve or Sydney. Then I thought of Sibelius. Why are you so offended by this? Please will you show your lacking humour for goodness sake. THIS IS PRECISELY AND EXACTLY AND ABSOLUTELY THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WHAT I WENT TO SUCH LENGTHS TO DETAIL. EVEN WITH SOMETHING AS 'THROW AWAY' AND CASUAL AS MY SIMPLE LITTLE SIBELIUS JOKE, YOU, JOHN, HAVE TO MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF IT WHERE THERE IS NOTHING TO BE MADE. YOU TRY THE PATIENCE OF A SAINT YOU REALLY DO. IT WAS/IS A JOKE. YOU MUST BE SO VERY MUCH FUN TO BE AROUND! But, I am not a child. I can rise above that. GB: THERE IS NOTHING TO RISE ABOVE. SEE IT. REALISE IT. YOU ARE OVER REACTING TO NOTHING. However, I still think the Sibelius dig was beneath you. GB: GIVE ME STRENGTH. THERE JUST IS NO GETTING THRU TO YOU AND I CANNOT TRY ANY HARDER THAN I DID. SIBELIUS... BIG BIG DEAL. IS THAT ALL IT TAKES TO GET IN THE WAY OF PROGRESS WITH YOU? NO WONDER WE FALL AT EVERY HURDLE WHEN YOU HAVE A TOTAL HUMOUR BYPASS. manslaughter! |
John S Stuart 04.09.2007 11:59 |
You send it as humour. I receive it as a barb. Even in this internet there are conventions to indicate humour - and as you have not used any of those protocols - I read it as a dig. Sounds like shades of Jude Goody and Shilpa Shetty to me. Funny how it's always humour at someone else's expense - but an insult if it happens to ourselves. I think even wars have hinged on less. It does show however, in any diplomatic negotiations, that an empathic approach should be employed. (That means sensitive to another's feelings). so if I KNOW someone IS offended by calling them by a name they do NOT wish to be addressed as - then it is only polite good manners (if not common courtesy) to do so. But to continue to do so, even when you know this - seems to me not only to be rude, but deliberate defiance. I have already stated that I have no problems with negotiations - I think that should be safe enough - but I expect, if I treat you with respect, than you could at least return the same common courtesy. Now it matters not who is right - or who is wrong here. Perhaps we both are to an extent. But surely the main thing is to remove all obstacles without any creating more? |
Togg 04.09.2007 12:23 |
OK so you've both had your say, frankly both of you need your heads knocking together. Now how about actually talking about the subject in hand? John, assume Greg will have the odd dig, that is his way Greg, assume John will fail to be amused at your humour. NOW GET ON WITH IT BEFORE WE SEND YOU BOTH TO NAUGHTY CORNER!!!!!!! |
Zak Royen 04.09.2007 12:38 |
Yes, guys, let's PLEASE forget about "Sibelius", and let's PLEASE not debate who should forget about "Sibelius" first... |
Darren1977 04.09.2007 12:44 |
Jesus Christ Almighty lads! Can we have an end to this argument. Greg, talk to Jim Beach about buying the GGreen tape from John and hopefully release it. Can you give us any hint at all of any archive releases besides Montreal in the near future and John what other items do you possess which you could sell to QP. |
eiricd 04.09.2007 13:08 |
If I was in the possesion of the tape, I would't want to discuss this in a public forum. Greg and John will probably never agree on anything :) but as greg pointed out - some people don't. This is my take on this situation; greg - talk to jim beach and make them contact John. In the end, Queen fans, like myself, can benefit big time!! |
TheGame 04.09.2007 13:50 |
Come on, get to the important issue. Mr Stuart: Give Greg a formal proposal, then he will take it to Jim Beach and the band. You might have offered him the tape for a one time £ fee in a previous thread, but now is the chance to get somewhere since Greg is asking for it. Greg: I only assume you will keep your word regarding how you will handle the proposal. Summary: No matter what have been written in previous threads, now is the chance to get somewhere. Quite easy. |

I always liked The Odd Couple. Felix driving Oscar crazy. Or is this more like Tigger and Rabbit? Anyway, I'm all for happy endings. |

But surely the main thing is to remove all obstacles without any creating more?I´ve read the other topics, and i realise that you´re open to negotiations, and it´s up to them to accept the terms. But, what type of deal have you pourposed to QP? I know that after so many replys from both of you, it´s not easy to find it, but what are the conditions you want, from now on to "guive" some recordings to QP? I´m sorry if you´ve already answered this, but i can´t read all of it again to find it : ) Take care |
Josh Henson 04.09.2007 20:45 |
Hmmm...so a word like "Sibelius" will be the deciding factor in why GG will never get released offically? Thanks GB and JSS. Is this also why other shit, like Hammy 75 and 79, Earls Court, etc will never get released??? FOR FUCKS SAKE!!! Stop thinking about yourselves and do what's best for Queen and the music. GET IT OUT TO THE FANS. |

Re: Brooks' proposal - Yes, by all means, eliminate the self-aggrandizing and antagonizing middle man and let the real parties in interest get down to brass tacks. |
Mr. Scully 05.09.2007 03:23 |
Now seriously... Do you really think that Queen Productions would even CONSIDER releasing Golders Green? This discussion is completely senseless. |

Mr. Scully wrote: Now seriously... Do you really think that Queen Productions would even CONSIDER releasing Golders Green? This discussion is completely senseless. That's the MAIN problem. IF QP gets the recording, I doubt they WILL release it |
pow wow 05.09.2007 04:03 |
It will never see the light of day as a individual release but may form part of a box set one day. If I was John, I'd make sure I had a copy of it before I handed it over to QPL. I mean, if it was accidently leaked the day after John's cheque cleared that would be pure co-incidence wouldnt it! Unless he's after a percentage of the royalties that it. I'm just being devious but it may make John feel better after his past dealings with them. |
Togg 05.09.2007 09:26 |
Whether or not it gets released is another topic altogether, however, nothing can happen unless John deals with Greg, so frankly as far as I can see at the moment nothing is what we will get! |
fredswife 06.09.2007 00:44 |
QP isn't going to release anything the hardcore fans want to see, only recycled product. I rarely post here but I read quite often and I am frankly sick to death of GB's huge ego and constant stirring of the pot. On most internet forums he would be called a TROLL and would be banned. Why WalmartZone won't do that is beyond me. He contributes little valuable info to the discussion other than being a complete and utter asshole. |
The Fonz 06.09.2007 00:49 |
you do realise that JSS and Queen Archivist are the same person, right? |

Funny, I have thought about that possibility also. But then it seemed too crazy to me. And too well-done. |

One would hope that these two were talking behind the scenes however I suspect it's all gone silent due to all the talk just being talk as usual! I have to say that whilst I might be unlikely to buy it should it be released it is a great shame if this tape can't find it's way back to the Queen vaults, I think both parties have to take the blame for that should it never happen. Greg may well be irritating at times but I do think barbs aside she was genuine here in his offer to put Johns proposal forward. John on the other hand seems incapable of communicating without getting so bogged down by nonsense that he fails to get beyond playground level. Such a shame, but as they say talk is cheap! |

Togg wrote: I have to say that whilst I might be unlikely to buy it should it be released it is a great shame if this tape can't find it's way back to the Queen vaults, I think both parties have to take the blame for that should it never happen.Back to the QPL vault? It was never there in the first place. It's a BBC tape, made by the BBC for the BBC, and the copyright resides with the BBC (I think). And as far as I understand it, the only reason QPL don't have it is because they didn't buy it when it was on the open market. |
Togg 06.09.2007 10:36 |
Never fails to amaze me how folk read so much into every word on this site... When I say back, I just mean the fact that in theory QP should have serious format versions of all major Queen events. To be honest I am sure the BBC would have been happy to supply a dupe version at the time had they been asked! |
john bodega 06.09.2007 12:28 |
It'd be decades before anyone would see dividends should this recording ever be handed out. For one thing, there's not a chance in hell that the setlist is 'interesting' enough to the Lowest Common Denominator for it to be an individual release. Which would place it in a compilation of sorts ; either rare things in general, or just live stuff. Which would probably mean you wouldn't hear all of it. (Unless it was on BLU-RAY!! Hah, do I get royalties for bringing that up?). Flea Market Montgomery. |

I remember watching with a grimace as the dialogue over this recording broke down and descended in about 2 posts into chaos- I still hope something gets done about it and one day we might see this officially released! Just out of interest, does anyone know if any other recordings were actually acquired by Queen following Greg's appeal for knowledge of live recordings a while back? Has anything new come to light? |
