I'm going on holiday next month and would like something new to listen to. I'm open to lots of different types, but have recently been listening to: ZZ Top The Darkness The Donnas Thunder Electric Six plus I like a bit of Queen, and all sorts of pop tunes from the last 50 years. ..so anything guitar-y with decent tunes would be good. Doesn't have to be "new" as such of course. Go on, inspire me, and others... |
QueenMercury46 25.08.2007 16:37 |
I don't know if you already listen to them, but try Styx. They're one of my favorites. Some amazing songs include: Come Sail Away The Grand Illusion Miss America Renegade And OH so many more. |

Tears for Fears - Everybody Loves a Happy Ending My favorite CD of late - it echoes back to the Sgt Pepper/Magical Mystery Tour era of The Beatles. Call Me Mellow is on the current mp3-player rotation. Of course, I seem to be back into the synth-pop era of music, which I don't think helps your "guitar-y" request too much. |
Penetration_Guru 25.08.2007 17:10 |
I never liked Tears For Fears, but thanks. Will try a bit of Styx - a mate likes them and Toto (who I don't like so much) so am nervous that they'll be too prog-y. |

I recommend letting Billy Joel into your catalogue if you haven't already. He's the one artist I've liked almost as much as Queen. Other than the piano man, I'd recommend listening to some more Elton John and perhaps even some Black Sabbath and/or Kansas. |

Random old bands... Badfinger, The Grass Roots, The Small Faces, The Faces, Humble Pie, ELO, and Max Webster. Max Webster is an old Canadian band, and they're probably our best kept secret. Do you like progressive stuff? Try Rush's "Permanent Waves", "Moving Pictures", and "Signals". Yes... "Fragile" and "Close To The Edge". Pink Floyd's "Animals" is a good one too. Genesis... they have various sounds for their many time periods. If you want something a bit more pop, try "Duke". A little more obscure... really melodic prog... try Camel's "Mirage". Something really obscure: Il Baricentro. They are one of the most incredible progressive bands I've ever heard, and few people have ever heard of them. More modern... Jakalope, Muse, Mobile, Avenged Sevenfold, and The Arcade Fire. Relatively modern... Jellyfish. They only put out two albums, but they were brilliant. Great songwriting, and a great fusion of Beatles, Beach Boys, and Queen, with their own unique twist. Wanna get away from rock? Go for Stevie Wonder... anything from the 70s. Start with "Innervisions", and once you've really taken that one in, go for "Talking Book". And then if you're feeling ambitious, give "Songs In The Key Of Life" a try. After a couple listens, you'll be glad you did. Jazz fusion... Dixie Dregs, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Pat Metheny. And of course, Frank Zappa... he has a vast catalogue, most of which is pure genius in so many forms. Start with "Hot Rats" and work your way forward. FZ is undoubtedly one of the modern era's greatest composers. "The Yellow Shark" is the hard evidence. There's a genre of dance music called IDM (Intelligent Dance Music). It is what it says it is. It's dance, but it's created by well-trained musicians. Check out Luke Vibert and Squarepusher. Still bored? Try Igor Stravinsky. The Rite Of Spring and the Firebird Suite should do it. That'll keep you busy. |
Gratzi 25.08.2007 17:50 |

I never thought I'd be recommending something that came from my sister (who went through a phase where blasting gangsta rap through my bedroom wall was her idea of good music) but she's out of that phase thank goodness and has gotten me into this new bad called The Devil Dolls. Yes, I know it sounds like some stupid R&B skanking out crap, but I find it brilliant. It's a great mixture of jazz and big band/swing with some alternative rock thrown in for good measure. Good vocals as well. Here's a link to a youtube clip of them from a live show: link On the side bar are links to their song St. Christopher, which is a good one and a very big change from the first clip. Seriously, the whole album is very different from song to song, yet at the same time saying very connected. |

Megadeth - I've lately started listening to Megadeth and have become very interested in some of their tunes. At one point I was totally hooked to their Greatest Hits collection. If you just want to get one of their CDs, then I recommend that one. It rocks - hard. Thin Lizzy - Their music varied pretty much throughout their career. And (at least at some point) their had excellent sounding harmony guitar parts in (some of) their songs. Kate Bush - Beautiful voice and really nice songs. My favourite album is The Kick Inside. Solid gold all the way. If you want guitar-driven music, this might not be your first choice...but nonetheless I still highly recommend it. |

Penetration_Guru wrote: Clearly nobody's reading me properly. 1. I already said I wasn't keen on Toto. And don't think I didn't notice you trying to sneak the guitarist in as well.Well, you did specify Guitar. If I could offer you a money-back guarantee, I would. Their new album is really good. I am a fan, but for mainstream audiences, just as good as Toto or Toto IV. And Luke's album is about as far away from Toto as you could imagine. There aren't any ballads here! 2. I said tunes, so that's Vai, Zappa, Carlton & Miles Davis out.Larry Carlton used to sing and does indeed write "tunes". After the shooting, the singing never happens, but for his first 4 albums, he did sing and have guest vocalists. Vai, ok, but it is his most "listenable" album without over-doing it. Zappa - Joe's Garage is chuck full of catchy tunes, all tied together by the C.S., but fun and funny. Miles - See below 3. Not sure if Miles had an album called Jack Johnson, or if you're suggesting Jack johnson himself. If the latter, he's a pile of hippy doo doos that my girlfriend likes. Some have called Miles' "A Tribute To Jack Johnson" soundtrack one of the greatest rock & roll records ever made. Yes, Rock & Roll. John McLaughlin. No Pianos. Herbie Hancock on only a Farfisa organ. You are missing out here. Uh, Jack Johnson, the boxer... not the spare. 4. It doesn't HAVE to be different, but there's no point suggesting The Beatles - I do listen to a lot of music so let's assume I have covered the basics.Yes, but giving you the same bands just repackaged, was all I saw.
