Anyone here attend, or plan to attend, one of their shows on this tour?
They played Detroit last night, but we had to head home yesterday. Heading down to the Inner Harbor of Charm(?) City to see them tonight.
Would like to hear some reviews.
Check Mike Portnoy's forum (at mikeportnoy.com). There are quite some extensive reviews over there.
Quite some surprises in the American setlists.
I've seen them last june at the "fields of rock" festival, where they played a real heavy set. From Systematic Chaos they only played Constant motion and The dark eternal night.
In November (i think it's november, can be october as well, not sure), I'm going to seem them again together with Symphony X. Hopefully they'll be playing some more of the new stuff. I really look forward to "In the presence of enemies part 1 & 2".
The set list and a review are at link
For us, perhaps we're getting old, but the entire night was way too 'heavy'. Couldn't stand the first band (then again, I hate 'death/speed/Goth' crap), the second was better and more melodic...
DT.....well, we're fans of 'Images & Words', 'Six Degrees', and 'Octavarium', so we found the set list not to our liking. Other than 'Enemies', their selections from SC I always skip over.
That said, we have the utmost respect for their talent, showmanship,....lights, sound, and screen animation were terrific....I mean, they're frickin' great! We enjoyed the Qryche/DT show more in '03 than this tour.....way too heavy for us.
But....we'd see them again the next time they're nearby.
Actually I do like their heavy side quite a bit. With an album like Systematic Chaos, you can expect a somewhat heavy set. I don't know any of the opening acts in the US, but over here in Europe we're going to get Symphony X. So that's going to be a nice show altogether (as far as I'm concerned). But for DT, apparently, there are two "types" of fans: people coming from the prog/rock-side and people coming from the metal-side. Octavarium was an album for the prog rockers, whereas SC is more appealing to most metal fans.
You'll really enjoy the 'Enemies' 1 and 2 finale then
The encore: for 5 minutes, I thought they were doing Rush's 'Xanadu'. No joke. Almost like they were taking their time, kinda settling back in, and if I could play back the tape, that's what you'd think as well.
Have fun (and take earplugs)
