When I was a child, I used to sing "I want to ride my bicyle" etc. thinking it was just a nursery rhyme. It was only later on I realised it was Queen song. I used to think Freddie was the one with big curly hair. |

I knew Freddie was the lead singer. I saw Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time on VH1. I could tell who was who, obviously, they played the instruments. Brian played guitar, so I knew he was the guitarest. Roger was playing drums, so I knew he was the drummer. John was playing bass, I knew he was the bass player. Freddie was singing and playing piano, I knew he was the lead singer. I didn't know anything about them when I watched the video. All I knew was, THIS BAND WAS FUCKING BREATH TAKING. And I liked it. The rest is history..... ;) |

My dad played Bohemian Rhapsody in the car when I was around 7 years old, and all I could think was that the opera part was the song they used in a 7-Up commercial (it is a drink, for foreigners who may not know what 7-Up is). |

When I was a kid in the late '70s/early '80s, Queen was one of few "exciting" bands on TV (the rare occasions they were on). All the other bands' lead singers just stood there behind a mic stand looking bored, while Freddie was all over the place...I hadn't seen something like that before. |

It was around 1974 when I first heard a bit of Killer Queen...I kind of blew them off because I really wasn't into that type of music yet. Anyway, right around Christmas 1975 my eldest brother bought a 45 rpm copy of Bohemian Rhapsody and I listened to it over and over again with him in his bedroom. I was fascinated by the harmonies and such but still hadn't gotten into them quite as I should have. By the time they relased You're My Best Friend in the spring of 1976 (from U.S.A. if you couldn't figure that one out) I was totally hooked! The sound, the harmonies, that voice and that guitar was un-believable and with the help of the Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack I became an instant fan! VERY MAGICAL! |

One reason Freddie Mercury's voice! Noone will EVER come close to it, and if they do, GOD BLESS THEM...... Freddies voice is the envy in the music business in the days, not nowadays, because it's all BS now..... Noone will ever compete with Freddies range of his vocals......and Time tells that....even nowadays.....not even close Micky |

I knew Another One Bites the Dust and WWRY and Champions, etc etc, but didn't know it was all Queen. My brother had me listen to Bohemian Rhapsody in early 1992 from the whole Wayne's World deal, and I was thinking, "What the hell is this shit?!" I was hooked. My mom bought me Greatest Hits (1992 US edition) and I became hooked. End of story. |

I share this sentiment, as well, since it really was Freddie's voice which first drew my attention. Perhaps not, to my adolescent ear, the technical quality, but, the power and emotion it delivered. I must admit, however, that, the more I listened, the more I became enamoured of the band as a whole. I simply could not believe the beauty of Brian's guitar playing, and, had never heard anything like it before. He managed to play that rock guitar style, with incredibly true, complex melodies, that you could actually hum along to. One of the few guitar players whose solos could actually(god forbid) be recognizable as elevator music!

I wasn't your average rookie when it came to knowing Queen in the beginning. Believe it or not I researched the band and then thought, oh, let's by one of their albums. Right from the start I was aware of who Brian was, who Freddie was, and so forth. The first time I ever heard them was on the radio, and even at that I was aware of a band called Queen. Hell, I even knew they were not 'all' gay. I suppose my introduction into Queen was hardly fascinating, it was just something different that I was partially aware of. |

My mum introduced me to Queen by playing AKOM when I was young, and whilst I dont play it much now, Freinds Will Be Friends was the song I most took notice of. I think the lyrics were the ones I understood best, that and Who Wants To Live Forever. A couple of years later, Mum finally showed me Highlander (she had been telling me about it for ages), and I loved it, and I thought the soundtrack was brilliant, so much power and exactly what I had been looking for in music, without even knowing it (before I heard Queen music was not important to me, whereas now I need it as much as air). I enjoyed the A side (it was a tape) and then Gimmie The Prize came on, and I was hooked. I had never heared guitar like that, never. Freddies power was brilliant and the drums and base were so strong, they weren't drowned out like some bands. Princes Of The Universe also greatly impressed me. I had heared of Queen before, We Are The Champions, We Will Rock You I had already heard. When I saw the little picture inside the cover, I immeadietly saw Freddie and recognised him, not knowing where I'd seen him before. I guesed Brian may was the guitarist, but I thought that Roger was John and John was Roger. When mum told me Freddie died of AID's I felt gutted, after what I had heard, thinking that there wouldn't be any more. Thank God that I was wrong. Now, there'ye everything. M.H |
