Everyone here talks about Freddie Mercury's death as thought it was a completely negative thing, but I like to think of it as a good thing in some ways. Nothing can last forever, and the band would have started declining in quality over the years, so Freddie went out strong with Innuendo and ended like an explosion rather than slowly fading into obscurity and eventually the sad tiredness of old bands like the Rolling Stones. His death sealed his place in our hearts and the history of music on a high note rather than growing old and forgotten. His death was the best thing that could have happened to his legacy, and wherever he is now, he is glad it happened. |

Oh, yes. I'm so glad Freddie is dead. Just imagine how many less fans they'd have if HE was the one touring with Queen instead of that Paul Rodger's guy. (that was sarcasm, by the way) Anyway, more seriously, I think that he became more famous because he died, but I honestly can't imagine that he's happy to have died. Knowing Freddie, I think he'd like to still be alive making music with his old pals from Queen. And even if their music did start declining, who really cares? I mean, it's Queen. |

if Freddie didn't die, hundreds of fans could have ended up with HIV/AIDS, but his death raised their awareness, and kept them well. Much like a certain son of a certain deity, Freddie took one for the team, so what? I mean it was a tragedy, but think of the effect it had on health of rock fans. |

Musicians and most other artists should die at the summit of their creativity, or else retire gracefully. However, since the latter often proves very difficult, Mick Jagger should have died in the '70s. |

oh, i wish the rest of the band would accept that tremendous loss, and it was one, like Robert F Kennedy in 1968...they should have released each and every live concert of Queen for us fans...imagine the Sun City, Superbowl shows of 1984 would have seen the light of day, every hard working day would be easier to take...i often fantasized that Freddie backed out of the society on Nov 24 1991 and died a couple of weeks later which made this expierence even worse for the band as guys like Jim Hutton and Magic Johnson really made it and are still with us, i guess. There was bad luck for other superstars as well. Great Black Sabbath frontman Ray Gillen died in 1993 of AIDS, he was performing live until 1991. |

I am NOT glad he is dead-I'd much rather he be alive today. Perhaps the band would become an embarrassment (like the Stones), but I loved Freedie/Queen's music enough to be OK with that. On the other hand, there was some good that came of his situation-AIDS awareness in particular, but all the good that may hvae come from his death, as far as I am concerned, is not enough to make it worth never hearing his wonderful voice, music and sense of humor that may have come in the future. |

Can't see how anyone could be glad that he died when he did, but in a world where musicians who are no longer important in the industry (see Elton John) become parodies of themselves either by becoming tabloid fodder for their behavior or attacked by a Perez Hilton type for not being perfect, I'm pleased that Freddie will never have to deal with that shit. Look how merciless the press is to Brian, he doesn't seek the spotlight, and he's not anywhere near as well known as Freddie was. |
FreddiesGhettoTrench 24.07.2007 10:25 |
I can see where both sides are coming from. On one hand, obviously Freddie's death is an immense tragedy. On the other hand, the obvious good did come from it in the form of more awareness of HIV/AIDS, etc... But also because Freddie was able to, if you minus the constant press B.S., sort of leave on his own terms. He didn't go on the "woe is me" business, trying to force everyone to like him out of sympathy, yet he didn't stop recording and stop making videos (until after TATDOOL, obviously) and go hide in his house with the curtains drawn for five years. He did what he wanted to do, and I think that shows a lot of his bravery and stamina. He left us with an inspiring show of courage, if you get what I mean? But of course, I would rather him back, rather he and his friends and anyone else had never gotten this horrid disease in the first place :( |

I think if it wasnt for Freddie's death, all those millions and millions of pounds raised for AIDS in his name wouldnt be there obviously. His death raised speculation about AIDS all over the world, not to mention Freddie wouldn't want to live forever anyway. He didnt wanna grow old and boring, so Im sure hed rather have it this way: dying young, raising money for a good cause, and having millions of fans all over the world keep him in their hearts. Plus we wouldnt have the FM statue if he died and we wouldnt have WWRY the musical. So God bless you Freddie, who died for us. Hes better than Jesus. |

No. Freddies death was not good. I understand the two sides of your point though (topic starter), it did create great awarness of AIDs, and is instilled his memory in the hearts of millions forever. But, when I listen to his solo material with Monserat, I couldn't help thinking that there was so much more there, and his music was becoming better. I think Innuendo would have happened even if Freddie hadn't died, and still would have been a brilliant album. I think also that Queen still would have made good material, because they had improved in making more complete albums, and their music would have continued to be great. But, I think Freddie would have made more great solo material, and I would of loved to hear more of that. But, perhaps I am wrong, maybe Queens music would have deteriorated, like the Stones. But we will never know, and that is one of the major tragedies of Freddies death... M.H |
