Lots of simpler but just really great rock on this album, so it's hard to order them to be honest. Plain list: 1) Dear Friends 2) Flick of the Wrist 3) In the Lap of the Gods 4) In the Lap of the Gods... Revisited 5) Stone Cold Crazy 6) Bring Back that Leroy Brown 7) Lily of the Valley 8) Killer Queen 9) Brighton Rock 10) Now I'm Here 11) Misfire 12) She Makes Me 13) Tenement Funster I like doing it with reasons as I am sure you all care, hahaha! 1) Dear Friends (Oh Brian - this tiny little lullaby that is beyond simple and I could understand if you'd call it uninteresting almost always makes me cry. The sweetness of this heartfelt wee composition by Brian juxtaposed with the sweetness and heartfelt-ness of Freddie's vocals just gets me every time. I think it's especially moving amongst this more fast paced album. I don't think Queen often got quite this bare and sweet and I adore this tiny jewel, even though it has to be Queen's simplest, shortest ever song, right?!) 2) Flick Of The Wrist (Flick of the wrist and you're DEAD, baby, Oh yeah! Proper GRRR. LOVE this track.) 3) In the Lap of the Gods (Epic! Bonkers, brilliant and that piano! And also Freddie's slowed down "God" voice is slightly amusing... I dunnooooooo, I LOVE it...) 4) In The Lap Of The Gods.. Revisited (Just reminds me of the ending of really Queen concerts which gives me this yearning feeling in my heart. And it's their first sing-along audience song (is it??), and I don't like) 5) Stone Cold Crazy (sheer speed and attack of it, yeahhhhh.) 6) Bring Back That Leroy Brown (I think this song is genius. All the train wooh, woohs! Haha, it's so fun and makes me smile and giggle, but musically it's also brilliant) 7) Lily of the Valley (Freddie soars on this one. Heartfelt little gem, but of these quieter tracks it isn't one that tugs at my heart the way some tracks do on albums) 8) Killer Queen (It's gorgeous, but a simpler song. Nothing wrong with that. Perfectly constructed pop song! All the tracks up to this one are adore level.) 9) Brighton Rock (I always like the first track of an album I love, so again, when I listen to this I hear the whole album. Great guitars. Love it, but not as interesting as those higher is all for me.) 10) Now I'm Here (It's great, yeah. It's not higher again because it just doesn't have enough strange and interesting in it for me compared to other tracks on the album) 11) Misfire (There's often a sweetness to John's songs that I find strangely touching. I mean on its own, I guess I don't find this one very special, but amongst a lot more grr on the album, I like it) 12) She Makes Me (A bit boring compared to other tracks, but I love the "breathing" at the end which takes it up from bottom place. Is that a weird thing to say?! hahaha. And I don't usually skip it... though I may do occasionally...) 13) Tenement Funster (We've found a track I often skip. Sorry Roger.) |

I meant *early* not "really" queen concerts for what Lap of the Gods revisited reminds me of. My heart, my heart. I don't know what "I don't like" was n reference to either, but it wasn't in reference to this song, which I LOVE. Forum needs an edit function!! |

I think Queen II through to ADATR is as perfect collection of albums as any one has released. I think part of the magic of those albums is that the songs and running order work brilliantly on each, yes there are some songs that stand out above others but in context those songs and the albums are whole pieces of work and work best when not thought of as individual songs that are better or worse. |
dysan 30.06.2019 12:05 |
I agree. Even the throw away tunes serve a purpose in their positioning. That said, I think the flowing tracklistings began to falter with ADATR - but that's probably due to the less multi-sectioned songs breaking up the sides nicely. Apart from the arguably overlong Jazz (which I love) their albums began to feel more 'slight' from ADATR |

Perhaps my favorite Queen album and definitely the one that I thinks flows better than any other. In fact, the dramatic transitions between songs is so good here that it is hard for me to think of discrete songs. I'll try anyway: 1. In the Lap of the Gods, Revisited.(what a beginning!) 2. Killer Queen (I tire of some of the singles - not this one) 3. Flick of the Wrist/Lily of the Wrist (favorite segue of all time so I can't separate them as different tracks in my mind. 5. In the Lap of the Gods 6. Misfire 7. Tenement Funster (first line always makes me smile). 8. Now I'm Here (Like so many of their early songs, great on headphones). 9 Brighton rock (Even at #9, still love it) 10 Dear Friends 11 Stone Cold Crazy 12 Bring Back That Leroy Brown 13 She Makes Me (only weak song here IMO) |
dysan 30.06.2019 15:57 |
She Makes Me scoring consistently low doesn't surprise me, but when I hear it in isolation all those weird sounds really wakes something up inside me. Even when I was little it put me in mind of memories I couldn't possibly have. Funny, as the cassette I had didn't actually have a writer credit only (Stormtroopers In Stilettoes) which in my young mind I assumed it was a cover of a song written by a band called that. Moreso, I also originally thought because it sounded so different to the Queen I knew it could've actually been a recording by a totally different band that somehow ended up in the tracklist. Weird! |
dysan 13.09.2019 22:32 |
I've been pondering this. This album is a city - I'll let you fill in the blanks - it has a fairground, a city scape, a cathedral and this is extenuated in the cassette format how most of us heard it for the first time. SMM is the seedy underbelly and is perfectly placed in it's penultimate position. Today's kids will never understand the power of the album track order giving power to the tracks. Not power, maybe, unleashing their potential. way beyond the 'skip' who's this? Oh it's shit. |

This sounded far more eloquent in my head. Then Peroni happened. |

I first listened to Sheer Heart Attack when I was about ten, it was one the first Queen albums I listened to after A Night At The Opera and Queen II, I think. The songs that I liked back then I still really like today which is a bit odd. In that time I've grown to really love She Makes Me. As I love similar songs by Queen and other artists, I've got a tendency for loving acoustic songs with heavy rhythms and beats. I don't often choose a song out of Sheer Heart Attack because I like a lot of the songs the same. But I think I can choose my favourites (In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited, Lily Of The Valley and She Makes Me). Listening to the full album with my headphones on, the song which bores me the most because of the repetitive long solos is Stone Cold Crazy. |
dysan 17.09.2019 05:59 |
Further to my confused post earlier - The nature of an album means that a song such as She Makes Me works more so as a great lead in to the final track. That transition is great. Like that beautiful moment The Night Comes Down stops, and Modern Times crashes in, Its a lost art. To the point where once I would skip to, say, MTRNR, but then as my tastes changed, I would in effect treat TNCD as PART of MTRNR. That journey-build up-stop of TNCD became important to start of MTRNR enough for me to skip to the start of TNCD in order to get the most out of MTRNR. |
