can't rank this one. i love every song on this album equally and would never listen to it in any running order than it was originally presented in. to me this is the quintessential queen album. queen stripped down and bare. their white album in that sense.

The first album where you can truly hear how Queen are going to shift musically for me which makes me a bit sad. I actually don't like how it begins with WWRY & WATC. I don't know whether it is because both are so overplayed now and I sometimes wonder what it would have been for me to listen to this when it first came out with fresh ears because now those first two tracks are a bit heart-sinking. But it does have my second favourite Queen song on it and some great songs, so...
1) My Melancholy blues
2) Get down make love
3) Sheer heart attack
4) Spread your wings
5) Fight from the inside
6) We are the champions
7) All dead, all dead
8) Who needs you
9) It's late
10) We will rock you
11) Sleeping on the sidewalk
And reasons:
1) My Melancholy blues - My second favourite Queen song of all time. The best Freddie piano of all for me and vocally and musically Freddie feels it so much. I wish they'd performed this live more often.
2) Get down make love - I just find this song fascinating. I could listen to it a hundred times in a row. They put an actual orgasm in the middle of it. And not just any old orgasm. A sort of alien, mystical orgasm. It's sexy and hilarious and GRR and I just love it. Brilliant. Utterly audacious. I mean, it is nowhere near one of my favourite Queen songs though, so that it ranks as number 2 for me on the album I guess says I don't adore News of the World. Yet despite that already by this album, Queen has passed the very best years for me, I still love News of the World and the sheer variation in tracks here.
3) Sheer heart attack - For me this is where News of the World begins and I love the attack of this track.
4) Spread your wings - Absolutely beautiful storytelling from John. Find this track moving.
5) Fight from the inside - Yep, we found a Roger track I love. When Roger does a good track it's proper sexy. mmmm.
6) We are the champions - It IS a great song, but it's just been overplayed so much it is hard to acknowledge or truly feel how good it is.
7) All dead, all dead - I love this song. It would be higher if Freddie were singing it. I keep criticising Brian's singing I have noticed in these album rankings. I do like Brian's voice for a change. But you know, when there's a great song it's hard not to wish Freddie were singing it. But I love the song.
8) Who needs you - This one always makes me smile. It's such a simple and in some ways sort of silly little cheeky thing! Love the little Deacon Spanish guitar and I always imagine Roger sitting sulkily in a corner while the rest of them are going at it with the maracas, saying grumpily "I'm not playing the drums on THIS!" hahaha which I am sure is not why Roger doesn't play on this. I just like to imagine it in my head. In the hands of many bands I think this could be a bit of a nothing song, but Queen sell it.
9) It's late - When this begins I love it.... but then it goes on.... and on.... For me this could have been a great 3 minute song, but it isn't a great 6+ minute one... I start to get itchy and want to skip the track half way through which is a shame as the overall content is great.
10) We will rock you - Overplayed and simplistic apart from the Freddie bits.
11) Sleeping on the sidewalk - Just a bit boring.

(Though i don't DISLIKE any songs. USED TO dislike Who needs you ...that "i like it i like it" bit was embarrassing)
However. Shame on you all. YOU CANNOT DENY THE MASSIVE INFLUENCE and ENDEARINGNESS of WWRY/WATC...
That simply cannot be denied. Over played or not....they top that list
