This is something that I have let rot in the back of my mind for a long long time and I still remember asking my mum if we had any Queen albums in the house. Her reply was negative and very dismissive "I don't want you listening to any of that." Why is there such a subtle, malign view towards Queen by many people, especially the older generations ie 40-50 (relative to a 20 year old like me). How bad was Queen's press coverage back in the 80's and what made my mother behave in this way and later my other relatives who were told of my adoration for the band around dinner only to gesture me with a stony, embarrassed silence and a topic change immediately. |

At a Bar-B-Q at our house, one guy reminisced about Freddie - my mother's computer had a Queen background at the time, and he saw it. I talked to my dad's friend about the Queen concert he went to on the Night at the Opera tour, and how neat he thought it was. Several of my school teachers liked Queen. All these people were in the 40-50 year old range. Queen was THEIR generation, after all. I think Queen is like any other band in the sense that some people like them, some don't. |
skiqueen 03.07.2007 10:50 |
well, both my parents, mostly my mom, like queen (shes 50). she went to the queen+pr concert with me and keeps a look out for queen merchandise to buy. my dad likes pink floyd more and keeps comparing queen to them, but iv heard him talking at parties to other people about what an amazing voice freddie had. the people that i know in the 40-50 age group are happy to talk about queen (mostly freddie) and are always proud when they share facts. im actually surprised by how much they know, but then again, they grew up with them. i have come across some middle-aged people who havent heard of queen and one or two people who scoffed at freddie bc of his lifestyle and the whole AIDS thing, but thats about it. |

Because Freddie was gay. It's said, but true. To some idiots "listening to music written by a gay" means "to be gay". |

I am of the ‘older’ generation and I LOVE Queen—although I didn’t really discover them in a big way until about 7 years ago. I don’t understand your mother’s attitude toward them and don’t know why she would feel that way. Maybe you could ask her? Frankly, it always amazes me (but pleasantly) that Queen has so many younger fans—that’s great! But being of the, ahem, ‘older’ generation, I have trouble finding Queen fans my age, especially on this site. I would love to find a guy who really likes Queen and would understand my addiction to their music. I know they are out there, but they just don’t have the time or inclination to post or chat on sites such as these, I guess. |

These are nice, positive replies! I think it may just be my family then. Although I have that annoying feeling at the back of my mind that people where I come from simply read tabloid junk and did so back then during Freddie's wild moments back in the 80's. Such a younger generation of Queen fans are now rising which I'm very happy about. I thought I was going mad when I couldn't stop listening to Queen songs back when I first found them and everyone else I knew passed idiotic comments about them. |

really? among my friends its hard to find people who DONT like queen! the only thing ive heard among friends is 'we will rock you is overplayed'...yeah it is! and a few of their other songs. but my friends appreciate and enjoy music from queens era, and respect them. as for others, ive only heard a handful of people who dont like them. whatever, its their opinion. |

Funny, my son (21) just said yesterday that he has not heard anyone say that they don't like Queen. We were talking about bands we like and dislike. He's a drummer in a band and I've been nagging him to play Queen for years but he says their singer can not sing Queen songs. |

^ *rolls eyes* And anyways...Most of my friends (my age) say they don't like Queen because Freddie was 'a fag'. I repeatedly tell them that being gay doesn't effect what your music sounds like...But they just roll their eyes and make fun of me for listening to the 'stupid queer Queens'. Ugh. :B And all of the older people I know...pretty much all...like Queen. Except for my parents...they say they are tired of them because I 'Queen them to death'. :P Whenever I wear Queen shirts and such I always get compliments from older people. :B |

My parents are both Queen fans :P My dad turned my mom on to Queen and then she liked them even more than he did! So my dad jokes that it's genetic that I'm a Queenie. I have run into older people who dislike Queen or scoff at them, though. Generally teachers who go, "You DO know Freddie Mercury was GAY and died of AIDS (with emphasis!), RIGHT?" And I'll be like "ummmm... yeah." And I remember back in freshman year, in November I made this Freddie tribute book to commerate the... it must have been the 11-year anniversary of Freddie's death, and my principal wrote something fairly nice, but then said something like, "I can't write the other thing I'm thinking." WTF? Then again, I had teachers make snarky comments about Phil Collins' lifestyle to me as well, so I get used to it. Gah. The other kids were worse. Like this bitchy girl came up to me in freshmen year and asked if I had AIDS o_O |

I'm the obsessed Queen fan in the family. I actually came to like them by myself, it wasn't because my parents listened to them or anything. There is one guy that I can't stand who is always dissing Queen and trying to piss me off by talking shit about them. He's a huge Led Zeppelin fan and he's always saying crap like "Led Zeppelin is 1000x better than that shitty band of fags blabla," and I get so mad. He's just trying to be cool it's really obvious. I mean to say that Queen "sucks"? How can you listen to Bohemian Rhapsody for example and be like "that was terrible." He's even pathetic enough to look up youtubes of Radio Gaga at Live Aid and say comments like "Freddie Mercury is such a fag, Queen can suck it." I made an account so I can reply to his comments saying FU and all this stuff. He didn't know it was me though haha. So anyways my point is that a lot of people are really stupid and think that if they go around and call some of the greatest bands out there lame, people will think they're cool. I don't understand it but that is how it is sometimes. Some people just think they're all that. |
Good_Company50 03.07.2007 15:44 |
I don't see the point in dissing the bands that other people like--everyone has different tastes in music. If I don't like a band I just say I don't care for their music and leave it at that. People don't have to make disparaging comments about them just because they don't like them. But it's great to find people who really love a band as much as you do and to share their experiences and opinions about them. |

I have 3 brothers and 3 sisters and I am the only rocker in the house. The rest are all soul fans and hated Queen. I am almost 50 (I said ALMOST you swines!!!) and a lot of my friends hated Queen without even knowing why. They said rock music simply wasn't their thing and they saw Queen as everything they hated about rock music. Despite this I am still a massive fan of most types of rock music, be it heavy metal, prog, glam, punk, AOR or new wave and will be to the grave. |

Weird. I come from Finland, and there most of the people (in my age) haven't ever heard about a band called Queen. If I say the name, they start asking me, what songs they have etc. Everybody has heard We Will Rock You and The Show Must Go On, but they don't know the band behind them. And the older ones (I'm 16) remember only Bohemian Rhapsody, and the thing that Freddie died to aids. |

I believe that, like many people said, that they are not celebrated as much as they should be because of Freddie's sexuality. My parents were not happy when I got into Queen. I had to kind of get into them on my own. Although I am straight, they began questioning my sexuality almost immediately afterward. Now my parents and the rest of my family are able to appreciate Queen's music for what it is, and are able to look past Freddie's sexuality. Some people, however, are stuck in a mire of judgment and look at it as, "if I listen to this, I'm gay." Music is music, no matter who wrote it. And even if some people do dislike them, there are people who adore them, too. |
saltnvinegar 03.07.2007 19:03 |
I have to agree with the OP. I know a lot of people who don't like the band. In the UK, Queen were crucified regularly by the music press. I think magazines like NME made it their mission to hate everything Queen released. The impressionable youth who read such magazines and wanted to look intelligent by quoting from them are the same 30,40,50-somethings today who still treat Queen with scorn and contempt. Granted, very few of them have actually *heard* anything more than a few of the greatest hits but that doesn't stop them judging the band as a 'novelty act'. But I bet if you played them 'The Prophet Song' and told them it was a rare, unreleased track from Led Zeppelin, they'd love it. Sadly, once someone has formed prejudice, it's very hard to undo. |

My parents do the same, MyRotation. Mostly my dad does. Hes always says that Queen is just a phase which really pisses me off. When I first started liking Queen my mom thought the same, but now she realized that its not. My parents didn't really like Queen before I did. Now my mom likes them almost as much as I do. As for the people not liking Queen, most of the people my age don't like them because of Freddie's sexuality. They always tease me for liking Queen, my friend especially. In the beginning she would get so mad at me for even saying Queen. She thinks that since Freddie was gay so are the rest of them. When I first showed her Bohemian Rhapsody, she liked it, but then she found out Freddie was gay and started to hate it. This boy I know got so angry at me for putting queen down in scrabble that he pushed the board off the table. I get so mad at them. People don't really get as mean about me liking Queen as they used to, though. There is one girl my age that I convinced that Queen made good music, but she still makes comments about Freddie. Most people that are older that I meet like Queen, but just wonder how I got to liking them. lol |

Why? Because they listened to AOBTD backwards, and their preteens are now hooked on pot. They knew BoRhap was about GRIDS, and then AIDS. (as well as 'Prophet's Song') They bought the 'Flash' soundtrack, 'Pain Is So Close To Pleasure' USA 45. Only heard the b-sides to 'One Vision' and 'Under Pressure'. Never bought any albums other than 'The Miracle' and 'Hot Space' (never listened to side two). Never saw them perform on stage in prior decades to this. whaddya expect? |

Most have only heard a few Queen songs, etc. It was my mum that got me into Queen, and my Nana and Grandad, whilst not the Queen generation, are always more than happy when I play Queen, infact they enjoy it more than everyting else I play (other than rap I have a large taste in music). I think as it has been said previously on this topic and many others, it is just personall opinion. I dont understand how someone could like 50c, his music really doesnt appeal to me, and it's vice versa with Queen. But, there are people from many generation who like them, which just shows the range they can reach. But whether people like them or not, you could be almost sure that everyone you speak to (minus the really young kidies) would know who your talking about =) M.H |

This is pathetic. |
~-:Moet et Chandon:-~ 04.07.2007 09:30 |
Some earlier poster said it was because Freddie was gay. I think that's probably the main reason that certain groups of people hate Queen. I have never come across someone who hates Queen because of their music. I.e., they think that the quality of their music is so low that they are worthy of contempt. In fact, the majority of people I know tend either to love Queen ("how can anyone not love Queen?") or else they'll at least like a few of their songs, albeit that they're not fans. |
Wiley 04.07.2007 10:31 |
I have never come across anyone who thought less of Queen because Freddie was gay or whatever. Many people I've known made jokes about it, some of them pretty nasty, most of them about Freddie, some think that the whole band was gay, etc. But after those jokes they always got a bit serious and said things like "Freddie had the best voice" or "their songs are great" or "my (relative) loves them". |

I must agree with pittrek ( is that spelt right?) I get a lot of shit because i am apparently addicted to queen, and i get the same old line all the time ( you must be gay to listen to that gay music, did you know he was queer? ) Of course i know he was, what these people tend to forget is that queen was 4 people and so what if freddie was gay? it doesnt make the slightest bit of difference, i love their music and i havent found anything better and i doubt i will. To me they were the total package and im sorry if i offend people here but paul rodgers aint worth a w**k, its just like kareoke. Anyway what i would like to do to people who piss me off all the time is lock them in a room and play every queen song so they were forced to listen to it, people can be so shallow when they bring up the (GAY) stuff all the time, one of these days im gonna lose it and beat some one with a stick !! I feel much better now :-) |
