I have a couple of demos, and I'd like clear up what they are.
One is the song from the NOTW sessions (Got to get rid of this feeling etc)
The other is a two minute jam with some guitar solo and Freddie saying something about feelings.
I have been told one of these tracks is called Feelings, and one is called Feelings Feelings.
The trouble is different people disagree on what track is called what.
Is there a definative answer? I think it would be helpful if we could all agree
Right... there's Feelings Feelings, the jam where Freddie sings the lyrics "Feelings" a couple times, and then there's Silver Salmon. These three tracks were all recorded during the News Of The World sessions.
You what?
Silver Salmon & Feelings were recorded during the early 70's surely. They were songs planned for the Debut album.
Infact, Feelings is followed by Silver Salmon on the master tape. After performing Feelings, Freddie says something like "Right. Let's do Silver Salmon for him".

Is this something you know, or are you parroting other people that "surely" know Silver Salmon and Feelings are from the early 70s? Is there are reliable source you can quote on this?
I ask this because this is how a lot of misunderstandings arise. For example, someone said Don't Try So Hard was a John Deacon composition, other people copying this, and after a time this has been accepted as a fact. A fact that by now has been sufficiently debunked and we now know it is a Freddie composition.
Silver Salmon was a Tim Staffell composition (his own words when the demo was played during a Queen convention where Tim was present, he said he had forgotten the song existed). So this makes it believable that Queen recorded a demo of Silver Salmon in the early 70s, because why would they rehash a Tim song in 1977 when they could rely on more than enough material by themselves. Also, the title Silver Salmon suggests a religious theme, something which would have fitted in with the theme of the first album. Note that the actual lyrics have nothing to do with religion. Instead they are about a spaceship falling from the sky. Early lore had it that this was an early rejected John Deacon composition (also not true).
However, there are reasons to believe Silver Salmon is from the NotW sessions. The most convincing argument is that Roger uses a particular kind of tomtom in his kit during this song (timbales, a very recognizable hard sound). Roger only used timbales during the recording of News Of The World and the successive tour. The timbales are easy to hear on Silver Salmon and on Get Down Make Love, for example. Later the timbales were replaced by rototoms. No earlier recording of Roger using timbales exist. This is a clue that Silver Salmon was recorded during the NotW sessions.
Of course, it is possible Roger used a kit in the early 70s with timbales, for one reason or the other, but as long as there is no hard evidence that Silver Salmon is from the early 70s, I am inclined to believe it is from 1977.
Well I was at the convention where it was first played by Greg Brooks, and a friend made some basic notes about the tracks that were played. The note says that this demo of Silver Salmon and Feelings was recorded in 1974.
And Greg Brooks is an idiot.
I agree with Zaiga, 100%. Let's also keep in mind that Queen wanted to strip down their sound for the NOTW album. Perhaps they revisited older, simpler things - like Silver Salmon. Just listen to Freddie's voice on SS and Feelings Feelings. It is so much more developed. He sounds much stronger than anything pre-77.
Honestly, you can either look at it critically to make a decision for yourself - or believe the folklore.
Both Feelings Fellings and Silver Salmon have a (great) "garage" sound which is typical for News Of The World. They could be WRITTEN in early 70's (as said SS is a track by Tim), but I belong to the people who thing that those RECORDINGS come from the NOTW sessions.
I agree that it does sound like 1977, Especially listening to Freddie's vocal shape. His voice was very weak in 1972.
But still... Why would they waste precious time by recording an song played in a band before Queen, and John apparantly doesn't know the song at all (Freddie says "I know he doesn't know it, but he might just play on") But ofcourse John doesn't know it, so there isn't any bass on Silver Salmon.
Now why would they waste time by playing a 8 year old song that one of the band members doesn't know.

For fun?
Why not? Isn't a band allowed to jam on an old song they wrote a few years back?... :)
Sir GH wrote "Greg Brooks is an idiot".
Well, I wanted to contest that as I've met Greg a few times at convention and he certainly isn't an idiot, but then I visited his Sir GH's Queenzone webpage and discovered why he feels the way he does.
Over in England Sir GH, we use the word "arse"!
