Just a curious question. How loud was Queen live in comparison to other live bands. How did they rate in the "Deafen you" category or did they just play at a similar decibel level to most other bands? Cheers |
Sweetie 29.06.2007 03:24 |
does it matter? |
steven 35638 29.06.2007 08:27 |
Yes, it's a good question actually. You have to consider that anything louder than 85 decibels is harmful to the ears, so it would be interesting to find out just how dangerous Queen were when live. |

CheersPretty loud.100 decibels i think. But not as loud Deep Purple or The Who.Both of whom i've saw. They were 120 decs and made your ears sizzle for a week. |

Well I couldn't imagine anybody being louder than AC/DC live....... |
steven 35638 29.06.2007 10:01 |
Off the top of my head I would guess that Pantera or Metallica were/are louder than AC/DC. In fact, I recall hearing from somewhere that Pantera was as loud as it gets. May I recommend that everybody plug up their ears before attending a rock concert, because even Queen could harm your ears. We're talking 'permanent' damage. |
The Real Wizard 29.06.2007 11:20 |
Although The Who are recognized in the Guinness Book Of World Records as being the loudest live band, I know someone who went to a Motorhead concert and said their ears were literally bleeding after the first song. |
coops 29.06.2007 11:21 |
I was lucky to see Queen several times and I think the loudest was in 84, I think, at the Wembley arena. I was close to the stage and the opening chord to tear it up made my teeth rattle. My ears hummed for hours after the show. By comparison, the Queen and PR show in NJ and Jacksonville were like " turn it up". But the sound quality was very good. I am sure the venue has a lot to do with this. Perth in 1975 was loud. Hyde park was not so loud. Can't think of another band I have seen played that much louder. |
Wiley 29.06.2007 11:34 |
The loudest show I've ever been was Guns and Roses about three weeks ago. Maybe it has to do to the fact that we had a huge speaker in front of us. I think it's mostly relative. I saw Metallica with Pantera in an open air venue and it was loud, even though I was far from the stage. The Queen and Paul Rodgers shows I went to were damn loud for an arena (Brian's torture was painful) but GnR were twice as loud! Wiley |

Wow, this is a VERY interesting topic. It's something I've never really thought about...but still, it's wonderful for me -- who has never been to a Queen concert -- to contemplate this. Coops, the teeth-rattling '84 concert sounds amazing. Damn I wish I could've experienced that. Still, thanks for this nice anectode. Seeing Queen on DVD is obviously totally different to having them rattle your teeth!!! I was at the 46664 concerts...I guess the second one would be Queen+PR. The first one was just Brian+Roger. I was near the front and they were both "chest-thumpingly" loud (i.e. the bass reverberated through your chest). And a bit painful to the ears. But not worse than that. |
goinback 29.06.2007 15:43 |
When I saw them in 1980, 2005 and 2006 the sound was just right for me. I think by 1980 there was a law passed (because of The Who) about limits on how loud rock concerts could be. |
Poo, again 29.06.2007 15:55 |
There's none louder than Spinal Tap. |
Hooligan's Holiday 29.06.2007 16:52 |
Well, when I saw them last year, as Q+PR, they actually weren't that loud, in comparison to other bands I've seen, like Rush (who are pretty damn loud - I should know, I saw them two days ago.) |

It was heaven for guitar players. Satriani was on the top of his game and was really loud, but when Metallica got on stage with extra sound...man! Unbelievable!! But the loudest live band are (were?) Manowar. These guys used to be on the Guiness World of records. They have the best sound equipment in the world and their sound, even though it´s very loud, doesn´t hurt your years because it´s balanced. Trylly amazing what this guys have acomplished with their live sound. Check out their Hell on Earth DVD´s or their new "The day the earth shook". Trully the best live sound! Take care |

Y prefer quality rather than loud sound... For that reason, Roger Waters have the best sound on earth now, and quadraphonic... 12 out of 10. P. |

I saw them in 78 and in 80 and both shows were deafening!!! I wasn't too far from the stage at both gigs. Once they started it was intense from begining to end. It was AWESOME!!! To hear Brian's guitar at full volume was incredible. Freddie's voice at times could go right through you and John and Roger together made the entire place rumble. |

goodco 29.06.2007 21:29 |
They were 'appropriately' loud. Clear, but loud. Many of the sound and lighting people worked with McCartney during a USA tour years ago, so they knew what they were doing. Nothing outrageous like Deep Purple or Ted Nugent. Ouch, ouch, and ouch. Then again, if anyone heard the WOF performance in Hollywood, as well as the WWRY premiere outside the Paris Hotel........good gawd........it hurt! Brian likes it TOO loud. |
J R Deaky 30.06.2007 02:37 |
When i saw Deep Purple the drums were so loud that when Ian Paice was playing the bass drum it was almost stopping my heart. And this was an open air gig. I do remember seeing Pink Floyd on the pulse tour and whilst i wouldnt say they were particularly loud,Richard Wright went to play a particular note on the keyboards that absolutely shook the building.Being a devil that he was,he held onto that note causing a dude next to me to shout out "Fuck off bastard" as he was holding onto his seat. |
goinback 30.06.2007 05:43 |
The interesting thing about Pink Floyd live was, since it was surround sound (yes, surround sound in a football stadium!), it wasn't blasting so loud from one direction and was more balanced. The result was it was loud but you could still hear to talk to the person next to you. |
Sweetie 30.06.2007 07:35 |
I know the Scissor Sisters made my ears buzz for a couple of days after...and Behind Crimson Eyes were loud - I was sitting on the stage during one show (I was trying to reach Garth's ((The bassist's)) leg and cling to it....) and he started playing and I fell off the stage because of it...but I was sitting next to one of the speakers so that may've had something to do with it... |

XD They´re true professionals, and they allways want the best show possible. For a band that has sold 10 million copys (not much), i think it´s impressive the things they´ve acomplished with their live sound. And their DVD´s production/presentation is outstanding compared with great bends like Queen (appart from their Hell part 1 wich was a DVD re-release from VHS evry other DVD is doubled filled to maximum). I must say this: For me, right now, they have released the best live documentaries DVD´s (Hell on Earth). They make no excuses for being who they are, and they live it! Like Joey DiMaio says: Live, drink, shit and Fuck! Not for the weak ; ) And they´re probably the best live band now. They play flawless, and those are not easy songs. And for a guitarplayer, it´s really inspiring to see Karl Logan playing guitar. It takes a lot of work and love for what they do! But don´t take my word for it. Grab their recent DVD (the Day the earth shook- The absolute Power). In their Bonus stuff you´ll see Joe DiMaio stopping a song just because the Drum sound wasn´t OK for him. So they did a soundcheck right there on stage in the midle of the concert, because -like he said- people have paid good money, so they deserve good sound! Priceless!! I think most people just can´t stand their lifestile, not theyr music. Enjoy, and blow your speakers! link Take care |

Here it is: link "Manowar claims the title of "loudest band in the world", and the Guiness Book of World Records has documented them as the holders of the record for the loudest musical performance, at 129.5 decibels. Custom equipment was built for the band by John "Dawk" Stillwell, which helped achieve the massive sound". Take care |
