My current list based on who I can listen to any time of the day: 1) Queen. There can be only one [/img] . 2) Sophie B. Hawkins. Her first 2 albums especially. 3) Journey. Lot of memories attached to their songs, as I used to exclusively listen to them a lot when I was in college. 4) Meat Loaf / Prince. I love singing out loud along to their songs. They have this way of screaming in the middle of a song which is totally like me. 5) Matmatah / Erasure. I have never liked the Beatles much, but lately I find myself liking their songs and appreciating their contribution to the evolution of rock n roll. They may creep into my top 5 anytime soon. |
ParisNair 25.08.2009 01:22 |
A few people have mentioned Journey among their favs here, that's great. When I was still very new to western music (1995-96), an uncle of mine (who was visiting from the Middle East) gave me an audio casstte that had no label or tracklist. It turned out to be a collection of songs from different bands. I could make out that Side A was just one band and side B was a mix of many bands (one of the songs on side B was "Love Of My Life" which I didn't fancy much at the time and I was only very faintly familiar with Queen). I liked side A a lot and would spend a lot of time playing it over and over, to such an extent that my otherwise non-interfering father screamed at me once to either turn the bloody thing off or atleast change the side. I'd sing "Hopelessly in Love" to the girlfriend and she'd threatened to leave me. Then I'd sing to her "What would be life, without you". Only much later did I realise that it was actually "I'Il be alright Without You". I asked a lot of friends if they knew the band , but nobody could help. I had all but given up hope of finding the name of this band when I heard the guitar intro to Don't Stop Believin' on radio and just sat their to hear the RJ tell me who it was at the end of the song. And I found the name "Journey" absolutely beautiful for a rock band. |

I can bet that guy Knute is kidding. Cannibal Corpse is a joke and disgrace to death metal. Their childish and idiotic lyrics about gore give the genre a bad image. Even their imitators write better lyrics. I'm no stranger to gory lyrics and enjoy them sometimes, when executed properly, a la Carcass or early Death but Cannibal Corpse is just stupid. I admit that "Hammer-Smashed Face" is pretty headbangable in an albeit generic way. Bands like Death(RIP Chuck Schuldiner), Morbid Angel, Necrophagist, Vital Remains, etc. represent what Death Metal should be. And if you widen the definition, then Opeth, At The Gates, Carcass, Into Eternity, Quo Vadis - they all complement the genre well. You guys should check out Into Eternity. They have a noticeable Queen influence in their melodic("clean vocals") parts. |

Matthew Sweet Tom Petty Warren Zevon Queen Big Star The late great Warren Zevon is fantastic. He gets heavy rotation in my world periodically too. If you haven't seen the YouTube clips of his many David Letterman appearances over the years they're worth checking out both for the music and for his sharp intelligence and dry wit. His ex wife wrote a great book about him after his death (at his request). In honour of you making me think about him this morning, I changed my signature for the day. :) |
