That was really cool. Somewhat similar to my experience. However, when Hot Space came out, I had only 4 Queen albums: News, Jazz, Game, and Flash. After hearing Hot Space, I was convinced that Queen could make a country album sound good. Why everyone was calling them simply a "rock band" didn't make sense to me. |

aw man. i wish i were born just 20 years earlier so i couldve enjoyed the same experience of buying the newest queen records hot off the machines ;-) 'the game' was my first non-greatest-hits album. i had borrowed 'a day at the races' and 'news of the world' from my uncle (he has every album by them) and i was in love. i had to start collecting more of these never-heard-before-by-me songs! i was sick of cyphening (sp?) bits and pieces off of media player to get a dose of different queen songs. the game was my first i ever bought. i was in love iwth dragon attack and it would be my 'summer album'. i couldnt get enough. so i bought NOTW from my friend who didnt listen to them anymore, and 'spread your wings' was the first song i skipped to, then 'fight from the inside' with one of the coolest riffs ive ever heard. the best though, was getting 'a night at the opera'. i bought 7 other cds with it including 'blood sugar sex magik' by rhcp which were the 2 albums i wanted most and saved my money for weeks to buy (gimme a break i was a kid and i was poor :-p) and it was simply orgasmic. the only problem was that one of my friends did a 'heycaniborrowthis?kthanxbye' on me, and it took me 2 months to find her over the summer ot get it back. then it was safe in my hands again. and i played teh crap out of it. so those are my happy memories of new albums that i can think of. excuse the rambling :-p |

I recently listen to “Hot Space” in its entirety the other day. My opinion has not changed since I first heard that record. It still stinks as much now if not more than when it was first released. I am all for artist trying new things, but there is nothing new or interesting on this album. Just a bunch of funk, disco & techno recorded with no inspiration, soul or heart. Instead of incorporating new styles into Queen and making it their own, they simply copied what others were doing at the time. The sound and production are down right awful! Most everything sounds flat & lifeless. Even songs like “Palabras”, “Put out the fire” & “Life is real” are week by their standards and sound more like B-sides. You get the feeling they were rushing to cash in on the success of “Another one bites the dust” and put little or no thought into this disaster. It truly is an embarrassment. I will admit that the live versions of “Staying power”, “Back chat” & “Calling all girls” sound much better and show potential, had they recorded the album with same depth & drive as their earlier albums or had a better/stronger producer it probably would faired much better. |

I remember the day I bought Hot Space. I was about 11 years old. I bought the CD and I did a personal record on the bicycle on the way home. I put it in the CD-player, and my mom called me for dinner. So I put on the song with the shortest lyrics, and it was Body Language. I thought it was a strange (Queen-)song, and I had heard alot of crap about the album in the time before I bought it. When I only had heard through it a couple of times, I thought the best songs were Action This Day, Put Out The Fire, Back Chat and Under Pressure. But now today I like more and more Cool Cat and Staying Power.. (And of course Back Chat and Under Pressure). All in all, I think the album is quite good, but I don't like it as much as the 5 first albums, but it's different and a lot of fun... I play it the most when I'm cleaning the apartment, it used to be NOFX I listen to when I was cleaning, but now it's Hot Space. (so now you know) :) |

I'll give you some of the songs are weak but "Put Out The Fire" and "Las Palabas" are very strong songs that are done very well. I continue to like this album and its uniqueness and how it stands out from their other works. Finally a "better/stronger" producer? Didn't know they got much better than MACK when it came to that category....Peace |

I have a confession to make. On many postings on this site (and in lots of other places as well) I have slagged this album off as being the worst Queen album there is. When it came out I was so disappointed because it was obviously a funk style album and it wasn't what I liked in queen at all. At the time I was getting heavilly in to Heavy Metal. There were only 4 songs (UP, Las Palabras, Cool Cat & Backchat) that I said I liked and the rest was garbage. Well I have recently started playing the album regularly, deliberately so as I felt I had to justify all the slagging off, and I can't believe I actually like the album (except for Body Language which I still think is easilly Queens worst ever song)! I haven't actually played the album at all for about a decade at home and now it hasn't been off the HiFi for the last week. Amazing what a decade or 2 does aint it? |

Never had anything against Hot Space, as a matter of fact when it was released I used to listen to it over and over again. I was 12 y.o. and was one of the first kids to own a Walkman cassetteplayer. On our vacation I bought the cassette and it was the only one I had with me. I still like the album and just yesterday I played the cd in my car. Put Out The Fire is a brilliant song! |

It's a sunny, spring evening in the upper Midwest. Invite 20 friends over for the inaugural listening of a Queen album. A couple of kegs are in the house. The smoke billowing in the residence is not from cigarettes only. There's Ted Nugent, Eagles, Billy Squier, AC/DC, Van Halen, Stanley Clarke, Yes, ZZTop, etc (you get the picture) fans at your house. They've all appreciated much of the Queen catalogue, mostly due to your insistance on playing various LP sides over the past seven years. Some went to Queen concerts with you. Some bought Bob Seger concert tickets and asked you to drive, not knowing that Queen was the main feature. Some rode two hours to Kalamazoo with me in '77, just because they liked Thin Lizzy, and couldn't wait to tell you how they'd blow Queen away (then had to easily admit how effing wrong they were by miles). A handful went to the absolutely fab show there in '78. Two van loads met up in Lansing and went to Joe Louis Arena in '80. Three of us then went down to Cleveland the next night. Yes.....the converted could not wait for the next album. It's 8:05pm....you turn the stereo up, put the vinyl on, and........... W.....T......F.....!!!!!!!!!!!!! 22 minutes later, amidst the embarrassment and looks that could kill, you wonder if maybe Dan Fogelberg might be a better 33 1/3 to put on. Thank goodness for side two. 25 years later.....I have yet to listen to side one straight through. |
