Check this out - just appeared on the Traders Den link Just started downloading so don't ask what the quality's like. Here are the notes, though... Queen Live in Vancouver, B.C. December 14, 1978 Pacific Coliseum 1gen Analog ReMaster to digital Originally recorded by Fred W. from right up front and center Tape to tape copy and mastering by Audioarchivist U - 101 Lineage: Queen>PA & stage monitor sound>air and audience>Fred's mics and rig (unsure - Marantz?)>Maxell UD90 tapes>vintage Akai replay deck (azimuth adjusted, no Dolby)>Sentrek 12 band analog EQ (minor low and high boost)>Denon DRM500 recording deck (Dolby on for recording) to make my tape copy>Maxell XL II 90>played back on same Denon DRM500 (azimuth re-adjusted, no Dolby)>Sentrek 12 band analog EQ (more lows and highs, shaping upper bass/lower mids)>SoundBlaster live! 5.1 card (grounded and tweaked)>Wavelab 4.0(track markers only, no digital processing at all) Notes: When I originally copied this from Fred's collection for myself on cassette, I was amazed how clear this recording was and how close Fred sounded to the stage. I almost always performed EQ surgery on any copies I made to try and smooth everything out, and this was no exception. This tape, like many recordings Fred did thru the years, was pretty close to perfect already and didn't need much work to make it sound like you were actually there, however, the lowest tones of bass and kick drum were a little thin, and upper bass/lower vocal range was a little jumpy. Well that's all fixed now. There is some noise associated with the original tapes (normal bias "low noise" tapes!) but that should not discourage you at all. My copy sounded more pleasing than the originals did, and even more refined when played into the computer for you now. I have chosen to not process the noise out, and leave a little bit of the shit and corruption in. I think the background noise gives this tape life and breath, and removing it would kill the atmosphere it brings. You will get used to it after 5 minutes, and it's not noticeable at all over the music. I have tracked this for CD in the way it was on the master tapes, leaving all sides uncut. Side A is disc 1 (38:39), while sides B and C fit on disc 2 (77:27). I have included scans of my color photocopies of Fred's original master tape covers for you, and a copy of the cover of the 1978 tour book. I have no real artworx for this NEW MASTERPIECE, so if you make some, please post them at TTD in the thread for this bootleg, and also please email me jpegs of your results. Feel free to make audio CDR's of this for your friends and family, but if any of them might trade further, please provide them with a copy of the FLAC files. Don't rip from the audio CDR copies you make, EVER! There is no need to pee in the trading pool. Backup your FLAC files, you'll need them later! If you can avoid it, don't EnCrap to MP3 files, either. MP3 sounds like crud anyway, and this dynamic recording will suffer greatly in lossy formats. If I find out you spread around an MP3 version of this, I'll come to your house and do bad things to you and yours... like farting in your fridge! So, just don't make into lossy files, please! That goes for you, too AAC and OGG! Track listings: Disc 1 (38:39) 1. We Will Rock You (fast version) 2. Let Me Entertain You 3. Somebody To Love 4. If You Can't Beat 'Em Join 'Em 5. Would be nice to listen to other Vancouver shows... There were only four played through the years: 11.03.1977 Queen PNE Coliseum Vancouver Canada 14.12.1978 Queen PNE Coliseum Vancouver Canada 30.06.1980 Queen PNE Coliseum Vancouver Canada 04.09.1982 Queen PNE Coliseum Vancouver Canada What we have at the moment is the 11.03.1977 and 14.12.1978 shows although the 77 show has worse quality and is not complete :( I would love to get it complete and in the very same quality as the 78 show. Not to mention the 80 and 82 shows ..... Any info about the other shows? Does the guy have it ? Thanx for seeding and the this amazing upload! God bless you ! |

Hey, I'm the guy who got this tape out to you all. Thought I'd chime in with my two cents... I got to copy this on my tape from the original taper some years ago. I've kinda lost contact with him, but hear through mutual friends that he's not doing so well. He's taped shows since 1968! Tons of stuff throughout the seventies and eighties. I can't remember for sure, and I don't want to tease you with stuff I don't have, but I think he had at least one more Queen show on his 'wall of cassettes' , but as I say, I haven't spoken to him for over 5 years now. I don't know if I can even find him anymore right now, but I'm gonna try over the next few months. I can't promise anything from him, but If I get anything, you'll be the first to know about it... Cheers! -John |

Nummer2 22.01.2007 04:19 |
I have listened to the whole show today for the first time. It's really a great show, definitely far above average. I'm no guitar expert, but I think that Brian was in fantastic form that evening (as was the whole band). Freddie's vioce is in rather bad shape but he sings as if anything was perfect, he tries hard. And the treatment Brian, John and Roger give the usually rather unchanged Brighton Rock instrumental section is simply awesome. Totally different style that evening, varying rhythm patterns, a slight reference to "Son and Daughter" in one part and overall a fantastic hard rock piece I've never heard that good before. What a pity it's cut! I love the audience background, though it's rather loud. It adds a lot of atmosphere and it never really obstructs the music. And to have that all in excellent sound quality – that's what it is! – makes this recording my top favourite from that particular tour. Bye, Nummer2 |
Nummer2 23.01.2007 03:33 |
... bump ... I don't want to let this thread fade away so easily. Is there nobody who wants to discuss this newly discovered show? There must be at least a few people who have listened to it already, what's your opinion? |
on my way up 23.01.2007 06:03 |
Yes, it's a great recording. The sound is very clear and I really don't mind you can hear the audience quite good aswell. That always adds some more charm to a bootleg. Freddie's voice was indeed tired during that period but he sounds full of passion, really giving his all(like always)and the rest of the band are in great shape. I think they play very well. I really like that jam and it's also a beautiful version of Spread your wings.Freddie sings with lots of passion and the others just play fantastic. The show has a nice atmosphere to it too so I'm really glad this show came out:-) |
little foetus 23.01.2007 08:14 |
I've listened to the whole show. Well, i like it. I think Freddie's voice is not that bad. Of course, it is far from the voice he has during the European NOTW Tour but I think it is better than some other shows in America these years (Dallas, Chicago...). It is decent most of the time. The only song which sounds quite bad is Boh Rhap as his voice cracks several times during it. Otherwise, I think it is a great performance. I really love Brighton Rock in the Jazz Tour. I think these are the best they have ever made during their career. It seems to me it is more structured than during other tours. I listened to the recording two days ago and I remember Let Me Entertain You, Spread Your Wings, Keep Yourself Alive and We Will Rock You (slow) sound really good. I rated the sound as vg+ but I think it is between vg+ and ex-. It sounds really clear although the drums and the bass could be a little bit clearer and there is some slight noticeable tape hiss. That's a great audience recording as we can hear the band really well and we can also hear some guys in the crowd so it is very atmospheric. Well, i love this kind of recording. Edit: I noted two cuts in the recording: The first seconds of Now I'm Here are missing and I guess Freddie talked about Mott The Hoople before the song and the end of Brighton Rock is missing too. So bad, it is really a highlight of this show. |
The Real Wizard 23.01.2007 11:13 |
I really can't add too much to what's already been said! Freddie, although he doesn't have the top of his range, sings very passionately. While careful with his range, he does get a few higher notes out here and there. The only disappointment was his solo towards the end of Somebody To Love. He just couldn't do it (I'm sure he learned from his blunder in Chicago, and took it down a notch). As for the band as a whole, we have absolutely fantastic versions of Spread Your Wings, It's Late, and Brighton Rock. The band play with much energy, but particularly, tonight is Brian's night. He nails everything perfectly. Their vocal harmonies, for the most part, are top notch as well. There are a lot of great comments from the audience. Here are a couple that spring to mind: During the DO2L intro, the one guy says, "that smoke smells like dope", as if one is supposed to be surprised by that at a concert! Before '39, the guy shouts to Brian, "come back more often!" Another interesting bit is when Freddie wants to do the Fun It bit in the KYA intro, but Brian jumps into the riff, so Freddie stops. Too bad, because I love whenever Freddie sings those few lines. Overall, it's an amazing recording with a great atmosphere. What a fantastic way to start off 2007. This one goes down with the complete 9-13-73, 10-6-77 upgrade, 12-7-78, 2-2-79, and 5-9-85 as one of the most exciting Queen bootleg discoveries of the past 5 years. |

Sir GH

ah yeah
wrote: During the DO2L intro, the one guy says, "that smoke smells like dope", as if one is supposed to be surprised by that at a concert!Lol, reminds me at the Chicago'78 Show. After "Somebody to Love" (6:32), you can hear a member of the audience saying : "Shit, where I put my pipe?" or something like that! Great Show indeed, but my fave is still Cologne'79!!!! |

Jazz 78 23.01.2007 18:07 |
This is certainly a great find!!! As I listen to it now you can hear that at this point in the tour they were on fire! I saw them a month earlier in Providence and though it was a great show it was still early in the tour. This particular show in Vancouver proves that they were a on roll. Listen to the Toronto, Montreal and Chicago gigs and you see that those were also performed well. Very tight but well oiled. This is what we've all been waiting for. I agree with an earlier poster... we should keep this thread going. |
bitesthedust 28.01.2007 07:13 |
Probably the best live version of It's Late I've heard on this night, the band really went for it.... |
The Real Wizard 28.01.2007 08:36 |
After It's Late, the guy in the audience says "that was the best song yet!"... and if you listen carefully just before It's Late, he's the one shouting for Ogre Battle! See, sometimes it's not so bad if you don't get your wish! |
