I had recently found this video myself. From what I read it's from one of their Top Of The Pops performances. My question is where did this mix of the song come from? It's pretty obvious at times that Freddie is just miming along to a recording. He even gets up off the piano towards the end when clearly much piano is still being played. Roger also looks to be miming along. Brian looks like he could maybe be playing live....but that would mean that the tape speed and his guitar tuning would have to be just right which would be a tough thing to assure back in those days.
The thing is though, this is definitely not the studio cut. While being very close to the original there are a few variations in the vocals and a few missing harmonies. Definitely some different guitar bits here and there and I think the drums are a little bit different as well. The whole thing almost feels just a tiny bit faster than the original too. Where did this version come from? Was it just redone for this performance?

So does the dvd help explain where that version of the song came from? Surely someone as wise as you should have some actual answers.
If I were to assume hun, and it would only be an assumption. I would guess that it was some sort of compremise since they hated the miming factor of Top of the pops. So a backing track an overdubs are playing in the background in addition to Freddie singing live for the most part.

Hmmmm...maybe you should have clicked the link and watched it a little closer before making such assumptions. There doesn't seem to be any live singing whatsoever here. Freddie is quite a few times heard singing long notes when his mouth isn't even close to the mic. Then he puts his mouth right up to the mic and it sounds exactly the same. Plus the harmonies are just too studio-sounding with more voices layered in than they actually had on stage. Brian does almost appear to be playing live though, but at times it almost sounds like he's harmonizing with himself. Not really sure if he's live or not but the guitar is slightly different than the record.
I already said that it's obvious they are playing to a backing track but my question was about where this version of the song came from. It's not like they can just run in the studio and quickly re-do the whole song. Maybe they could do it in a day but some considerable effort has to be made. This is an interesting although subtle variation on the song and to me it seems intriguing to wonder if anyone knows where this version came from and if it was only made for this performance.
From the way you chimed into this discussion I assumed you must've had some informative info about this. but oh well, it turns out you're just as dumb as the rest of us. :-D
