This IS Green from the Wreckage and I believe it's only the first verse :P Thanx alot for the THANK YOU messages btw :P We (me an the_hero atleast) really like people like you who take the time to thank us for releasing stuff, although it's almost all mp3 stuff. (Correct me if I'm wrong about the song) |
ARMANDO MARTINEZ 08.05.2005 12:30 |
NO, THIS IS NOT GREEN. I THINK THIS IS SOME OTHER SONG. CHECK OUT THIS INFO FROM RIEN'S SITE "MERCURY PARADISE": Wreckage make several attempts at "Green", before switching to another song, obviously a Freddie-composed number, which is difficult to identify (but could be "Blag-A-Blues") from its lyrics because the band were interrupted before they reached the chorus. "Whoever we were sharing the flat with came in and complained that it was one o'clock in the morning," remembers Richard Thompson. "So Freddie stopped singing." And there ended the last and certainly most important pre-Queen recording. One well-heeled collector will have the chance to hear the tape for himself when it comes up for auction at Christie's on 6th June. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK! B.T.W. IF IT'S POSSIBLE SOMEONE COULD UPLOAD MONTREAL 78 AS RAPID-SHARE FILES? THANKS |
Jjeroen 08.05.2005 12:34 |
Sorry, but this indeed IS one of the attempts at GREEN! |
Rien 08.05.2005 15:03 |
Well it sure sounds like a Wreckage rehearsal, while it has the same "hand on knees-clapping" as in Green. But the lyrics and melody are different as far as I can hear. It starts with "there's a place I have been and a face I have seen...etc" and that's not in Green. Correct me if I'm wrong, of course. This must be another demo and I might think this sounds better than the Green recording. To Armando Martinez: can you please contact me through my site? On Queenzone I cannot see your e-mail address. |

Mercuryworks: "...It infact is Green tAKE 4 To be exact..." There is no "Green" Take 4. There never was. There is one long track called "Green" which lasts about 10 minutes. The bits we hear are the bits between conversation. I wish people would stop making things up so that they sound more authoritive than they really are. Wreckage: Unreleased Home Demos, Freddie’s Flat, Barnes, 1969 Christie’s Pop And Guitars Auction, Thursday 6th June 1996. Richard Thomson: Lot 153 sold £4,800. Bought by Queen Productions Ltd – John S. Stuart, Record Collector, 11th June 1996. Green (Rehearsals & Versions) ARMANDO MARTINEZ: "NO, THIS IS NOT GREEN... One well-heeled collector will have the chance to hear the tape for himself when it comes up for auction at Christie's on 6th June". Well - actually it is Green (see above), and I also think you are nine years out of date. Queen Productions bought this tape in 1996, and I can not see them putting it up for auction. |

Thanks for helping us out, John. But it still sounds a bit different from Green, but if that was 10 minutes it could be the song. Anyway.. I think this demo sounds better than the "Green" we have. |

Can anyone also tell me - was the master for the 1984 Thames Recording from 1967 also included in Richard Thompson's 'Lot 153'- and was this therefore ALSO bought by Queen productions? Thanks in advance, I'm simply wondering if Queen Productions (or related) bought this item. Cheers, |

Recorded Friday 31st March 1967, Thames Television, Broom Lane Studios, Teddington How different do those songs sound John? Have you heard them? you say "Christie’s Pop And Guitars Auction, Thursday 6th June 1996. Richard Thomson: Lot 151 sold £2,800. Bought by Queen Productions Ltd – John S. Stuart, Record Collector, 11th June 1996." Does that mean you bought them? or are you reporting that Queen LTD bought them? If so, why is Queen LTD buying other artist music? or is some Queen Music mixed in the lot? what do these companines do with other artist music when they buy them in these so called auction lots? destory, save or send this back to whom ever made it? Sorry so many question's, just something I'd like to know. |
John S Stuart 09.05.2005 19:25 |
wstüssyb: "How different do those songs sound John... are you reporting that Queen LTD bought them... why is Queen LTD buying other artist music?" There are no major variations from the original versions - they are cover versions after all. The only thing which would help these covers stand out from the crowd are Brian's unique red special guitar solos. I did not purchase, I was reporting that Queen Productions bought the master reel. The reason that they were bought by QP was to keep the reel out of the public domain. They are after all, a record of the music of Brian May, and I guess he wants to keep all copyright controls over his material. |

Big John, this time I have to disagree with you (unless you have some additional information which I do not know, which might very well be the case). :-( From the letter which Freddie wrote to his friend Celine Daley on 1969.10.26: "[...] The practice was really great. Richard collapsed half way through and I've really gone and lost my voice (no kidding). It hurts just to breathe. Hope I'm o.k. for this Friday 'cause I'm going to out-ponce everyone in sight (it shall be easy). [...] We've written a few new numbers [...] (1) Green 2) Without You (3) Blag-a-blues (4) Cancer on my Mind (originally called Priestess) [...]" Being that one a monster session from what we can call a new band, I believe that they must have rehearsed almost their entire repertory. And I guess they must have been recording and hearing and re-recording themselves a lot of that time. Now from the same Record Collector #199 (and I know it is not the Bible, see below): "[...] The excellent quality recording survives on a 5'' spool, and runs for just over 10 minutes. As Freddie revealed in his letter, the session was an extended one. [...] Wreckage make several attempts at 'Green' before switching to another song, obviously a Freddie-composed number, which is difficult to identify (but could be "Blag-A-Blues") from its lyrics because the band were interrupted before they reached the chorus. [...]" Now my two cents ...from my own ears: The tape itself contains various takes (and that is a fact) of two distinctive themes. One is certainly Green as confirmed by its lyrics. The other might be a different part of Green (as you suggest), but it might also be another song. Firstly, the music is very different in rhythm and tonality (but that approach to ONE SONG still suits Freddie), but also the lyrics do seem completely unrelated. Why Blag-A-Blues, then? Well, Richard Thompson himself suggested that option (he seemed to remember the chords of some WRECKAGE songs due to their strange progressions, but not their melodies). ...And there you have it! ;-) |

Wilki: "Being that one a monster session from what we can call a new band, I believe that they must have rehearsed almost their entire repertory. And I guess they must have been recording and hearing and re-recording themselves a lot of that time". First - the tape only lasts 10 minutes in length. It deals with one song "Green" which was meant to be split into three areas (a bit like "Bo Rhap"), but I accept may sound like three different songs. I know this first of a number of reasons... I was the one who discovered the tape, and according to Mike Bersin, "the track was too poncy to be considered real blues. Even then Freddie liked the Beatles idea of "A Day In The Life", and snapping two or three songs into one big opus". I also wrote that "Record Collector" article, but, my features editor, Andy Davis decided to pencil in some of his own ideas. In his mind, (I guess) making it out to be two songs rather than one, made the tape more desirable, and thus a bit more exotic to write about. (Thus increasing magazine sales). On the tape itself, there is an "instrumental" section which the band discuss as a "middle eight", demonstrating that it is indeed meant to be the same song. In the book "Queen: The Early Years", the lyrics to the track are printed. I think the printed lyrics also match up with what is on the tape. Finally, if you have access to the complete tape, you can actually edit the three parts to run in the correct order. After you have done that, you will see that there is a flow and logic in both lyrics and music. Finally, although your letter may be correct, it pre-supposes that all the rehearsals were taped on one night. I personally do not think this to be the case - as all those involved with bands would testify. I guess we are talking about the same thing, but your view is that the tape is made up from different songs, and me, I view the tape as different bits of the same song. Perhaps I am an old romantic, but for me, I am with Mike Bersin, that is Freddie was much more than a standard blues singer, that he would (in Bersin's view) change key without reason, and pull songs into different tangental areas. Now, it may well be that you are correct, and that each fragment represents a new track, however, I view "Green" as an early example of "Bo Rhap" style writing, and that for me is almost exciting as the music itself. |

If you add those three files together they come to just over 11 minutes. I'm a bit confused as this thread seems to contradict what's being said on this one. link Then there is this recording, which is about 5 minutes in length, so where does that fit in? link |
