Hi, I was doing some detective work for another thread. And I found out that there was a Queen show at the 7th of December in 1974 In the german small town "SINGEN"( Lake Constance / Bodensee) at an unknown venue. Now the first thing that makes me wonder, SINGEN is a small town with only 45 000 citizens. After they played in Munich,Frankfurt,Hamburg and Cologne they played in SINGEN ??? Well that isn't impossible but... In Germany there is a another town with a very similar name called "SIEGEN" with 100 000 citizens(central Germany) and a bit of media history( Radio station/ local TV Studio WDR, TV shows from the "Siegerlandhalle" etc.) ...sounds like a better/more logic option to me. An Open Air festival can be ruled out because of the date 7 December...:) The fact that they played in DenHaag/The Hague Netherlands the other day(8thDec) makes more sense to the logistic aspects of touring( Sheer heart attack Tour). Can someone confirm that the show has taken place in SINGEN/Germany (Lake Constance) ??? |
The Real Wizard 24.01.2014 15:42 |
I once heard a rumour that the 12-6-74 show was actually in Singen, but it turns out it was indeed Cologne. What's your source for the next night being in Singen/Siegen? This clearly isn't going away, so it's worth investigating. |
musicland munich 24.01.2014 15:56 |
There was a discussion at the german fan site around 2006 but it doesn't lead to an proper end. other source www.ultimatequeen.co.uk concertgraphy 1970 - 76 SINGEN or SIEGEN in both cases there is no venue( City hall- just for example) mentioned. Maybe a ghost show ? |

a further mention of the possible venue in Singen here: link (found with my friend Dario DN) |
Gregsynth 24.01.2014 17:05 |
Here's another site: link The gig could've been at the venue called "Scheffelhalle." It's a really small venue (holds around 400). link |
Gregsynth 24.01.2014 17:10 |
Here's another venue in Singen called the "Stadthalle." link It's unlikely Queen played there in 1974 since it looks like a bigger concert hall (with 3,000 capacity) and they weren't popular enough to fill bigger venues yet (at least by themselves). |
musicland munich 24.01.2014 17:44 |
^^^ "Scheffelhalle" could be a "BINGO"... The history of the venue fits build in 1925, and AC/DC played there 36 years ago. I will make contact with the blogger if that Queen 74 gig can be seen as "confirmed" |
Thistle 24.01.2014 18:06 |
Here's a wee idea: perhaps the venue will have records of Queen playing there (Scheffelhalle). Would it be possible for you to contact them? (If it still exists, that is....) |
musicland munich 24.01.2014 18:08 |
^^^ I will ask for any kinds of evidence pictures, Tapes...hope he check his inbox. And of course I will share for free :) |
Thistle 24.01.2014 18:12 |
Surely there's a reference library in Germany that stores older newspaper reports. Here in Glasgow, we have the Mitchell Library that keeps copies of old papers on film (so if you know the dates you're after, data is easy to find). In this case, we have the date of Dec 7th '74. Surely it can't be that hard? (and before anyone gets there first, I'll say it....."THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID" lol). |
The Real Wizard 24.01.2014 23:22 |
ha ! Even a sick fuck like me didn't think of that. This is getting interesting. Good luck with the research, guys ! |
musicland munich 25.01.2014 00:25 |
^^^ seems like Scheffelhalle / SINGEN will be the place. Gigs from UFO,Scorpions, Canned Heat and Status Quo are confirmed by a witness. ( postet on a german Status Quo forum) Capacity maybe varies up to 900. And it's logic:) The Sheer heart attack Tour was about to end - so their pockets were full with greens - and the swiss border is just a couple of miles away :) |
Gregsynth 25.01.2014 00:55 |
Awesome! |
Claudio_CQI 25.01.2014 01:26 |
great thread. I can't wait to add this new venue to my gig list. thank you. |

I know it's a real stab-in-the-dark, but I have contacted the PR team at the Deutsche National Bibliothek to see if they can point me in the right direction regarding research of this. I'm not expecting an answer, but even if they could pass the query on to a kind librarian who could look it up on film, that would be awesome. I've given the date and the two possible venues, so if there's any newspaper reports to reference the show, then bingo. Even better if they can provide screenshots lol :) |
cmsdrums 25.01.2014 10:52 |
I'm sure the Queen archivists could confirm straight away - assuming this thread hasn't just led to to tear their live book to shreds again that is!! |
Thistle 25.01.2014 10:55 |
^ I'm not sure I can take their word for it, tbh, given that some of the printed material is already wrong. Not a diss in any way to them, btw, but it is true. |
musicland munich 25.01.2014 11:27 |
I am still waiting for a response from the "Scheffelhalle-blogger", well maybe over the weekend. I will provide some more information about german venues of those days. On the 4th of December 74 QUEEN played in Frankfurts "Palmengarten" NOT in the "Jahrhunderthalle" or "Festhalle" Its confirmed by a Frankfurt Newspaper. - the other act that night "Lynyrd Skynyrd". http://www.fr-online.de/frankfurt/palmengarten-gesellschaftshaus-die-feine-gesellschaft-und-ihr-haus,1472798,20768968.html |

UPDATE !!! I found soft evidence that the show has taken place in SINGEN ( Lake Constance / Bodensee). It was a discussion on the german fan board. Someone was uploading a report by the famous german youth magazine "BRAVO". The article mentioned "SINGEN"... The board had some technical problems with older links so I can't read them or download them but the reaction of the following post let me think that this is true, and SINGEN ( Lake Constance / Bodensee ) can be seen as "confirmed" "Scheffelhalle" is still in question....but the " Stadthalle " can be ruled out because it was build in 2007 Maybe it's my browser..someone can check this link ? link ( scrolling and look out for the post that says " Here you go" by Christina) |
The Real Wizard 29.01.2014 17:42 |
There's nothing in that post. Are those supposed to be links? They're not active. Can you copy and paste what it says? |
musicland munich 29.01.2014 23:43 |
It seems like those (now) broken links once leads to old"BRAVO" reports/photo - because they named "Bravo1974-02klein" The reaction by a user called "MELBLUES" at the bottom of the page "Thanks Eliza, according to your photo it was Singen, even if it's strange to my mind..." That board is still under protection by proper mods... No Trolls on Queenfcg.de ,so I think this is true and show was in SINGEN ( Lake Constance). It would be nice to have that final evidence... I am still investigating on that thing. |
Thistle 30.01.2014 13:01 |
^ no word from dnb as of yet unfortunately. Like I say, I'm not expecting to hear from them, but it would be nice if someone there looked it up. Would take literally 5 mins of their time. |
musicland munich 04.02.2014 11:39 |
Now - I am in trouble !!! The Scheffelhalle ( SINGEN) blogger answerd my mail - he didn't know anything about a Queen Gig, but confirmed some other 70's bands .... The city archiv(SINGEN) told me that on the 7th of December a classical music artist from Freiburg appeared....and that I should tune my search into "SIEGEN" ( central Germany) "...wir müssen Sie, leider enttäuschen. Am 7. Dezember 1974 fand in Singen nur ein Kammerkonzert Freiburger Barocksolisten statt. Ihre Suche müssen Sie vielleicht doch Richtung Siegen verlegen. " I already made contact to "SIEGEN" city archiv...waiting for a response... |
Thistle 04.02.2014 11:58 |
^ I wouldn't say that puts you in trouble: I'd say that edges you closer to the truth :) At least these people took the time to get back to you - I'm still awaiting even an acknowledgement from dnb. |
GT 05.02.2014 22:58 |
There was no gig in Singen. |
Thistle 10.02.2014 13:13 |
The Deutsche National Bibliothek got back to me regarding this, but it's not the best of news. Firstly, I have to say that they were very professional and friendly, and the PR dept quickly put me on to the relevant people - however, they anticipate that it would be "time-consuming" task of research and therefore chargeable at £10 per 15 minutes, even if unsuccessful. The necessary newspapers are not all available at DNB, and so they might have to contact the libraries of the two cities concerned, and extend the search to libraries in Leipzig, Dortmund and so on. They have a number of music magazines, but it is not guaranteed that coverage of the show would be available. I have been provided with links to all of the major libraries in Gerrmay who MAY have the correct 'papers, however they'd likely charge as well. Not that I'm a skinflint, but I'm not really willing to pay £40 upwards for this information. I'm out!! |
musicland munich 10.02.2014 18:42 |
^Oh, that's ok....I am still waiting for an answer from the "SIEGEN" city archiv...if they diidn't answer by the end of this week, I will contact them again...maybe they just forget about it. |

The SIEGEN city archiv also answered "negative" Back at Zero I guess. Mit freundlichen Grüßen i.A. L. Burwitz ___________________ Ludwig Burwitz Universitätsstadt Siegen, Stadtarchiv KrönchenCenter, Markt 25, 57072 Siegen XXX@siegen.de Tel.: XXX FAX: XXX ...despite intensive researches we are sorry to say that on that particular date - we couldn't confirm a Queen Gig |
Thistle 18.02.2014 12:04 |
So - no gig at either Seigen or Singen? I suppose that "couldn't confirm" just means there are no records of it, but it's odd. Where was it, then? Square one!! |
musicland munich 19.02.2014 17:56 |
I will login to both citys internet communitys...maybe there is a witness of that show. I personally n-e-v-e-r see a picture, or have listen to a bootleg of that show in Siegen / Singen.Even in the articles of that tour, the writers mentioned Munich,Cologne,Hamburg and Frankfurt. All I know about the date in Siegen/ Singen is" hearsay" so far. |

Musicland, are you sure about the 'S' in the name of the city? Maybe it was not Singen, but Bingen. Also not a very big city, but Wiki says it is in Landkreis Bingen-Mainz. A gig in or near Mainz suits better in a list of cities like Frankfurt, München etc. than Singen. |

The same goes for " Lingen " :) @BETA No, nothing so far. Sorry. |
