GB: Queen Archivist 13.11.2013 20:03 |
GB Queen Archivist. I have been following the comments here on RT's 'The Lot' boxed set with both interest and the usual irritation. There is a lot I could say (no pun intended), but Gary summed it up in his thread yesterday - though I might not necessarily share his view that 'most fans are pleased with the overall set'. Much of the comment I see aimed at Gary on QZ is unfair and without foundation. Some of it is just plain stupid and insulting, but I've come to expect that from certain imbeciles and teenagers that exist here. GT seems to be getting similar crap aimed at him, that I used to get, before I gave up and buggered off away from this often draining tiresome space, and he is quite rightly equally bewildered. He's not upset by it, but I think he is pissed off by how massively wide of the mark some of it is. I see things like... A) That I think is beneath you as a person, and unprofessional as a QPL employee. B) GT might well be furious, but is unable to say that here, in case it puts his job at risk. C) Your work as an excellent archivist has been tainted. I think it appropriate to point out:- 1) GT is not a QPL employee. He helps us out when we call upon him, most notably co-writing sleeve notes and other text with me. 2) GT does not put his Queen job at risk, because he doesn't have a job with QPL to put at risk. Thus, he is free to speak his mind, and most often he does so, openly and without fear of upsetting his perceived employer. He just happens to do so with careful and sensible consideration, rather than blurting out all kinds of nonsense without thinking about it first! This irritates a lot of QZ-ers, who seem to think he should make public EVERYTHING he's privy to when he works on projects with us. I know this feeling well. 3) It's evident by now, surely, but just to make things absolutely clear; Gary is not an archivist. Queen employ just the one Archivist, and that is me. Gary is not here every day in the archive with me. He has his own job in Torquay and is very happy with it. We work together on the phone 99% of the time, and it works extremely well. I hope this makes the situation clearer, and further that it illustrates how ridiculous it is to blame GT for various things alleged to be his fault, when actually he was responsible for none of the decisions or proof-readings he gets abuse over. Many people here perceive things that are very very far removed from the actual behind-the-scenes reality. Gary helps us out without hesitation, and always does his level best, like me, to achieve the best possible end result. It is not his fault if other people then present that work in ways that are beyond his control. So, to haul him over the coals, as some of you do here, especially this week, though entirely predictable, is plainly absurd, ludicrous and inappropriate. I recently said to Gary "Welcome to my world," because the void between the reality of my actual job, the things I do and am responsible for, and which I have absolutely no say in and am not responsible for, and how that is perceived by certain fans out there.... is VAST. It would be great if some of you QZ-ers thought a good deal more, did a little research first, before launching into ill-informed and unfounded criticisms of what you think Gary and/or me has done wrong, or should account for, or explain away, or defend, or apologise for. It is utterly crazy! 'The Lot' is being fixed at this very moment. It's regrettable that errors crept in, of course it is. No one is more disappointed than us. But, it'll be a bloody good product offering Roger's entire back catalogue, and his new album which has just charted!!!! Enjoy it. Listen to the singles, remixes, extended versions, live renditions, previously unreleased audio, and the videos that you never had before. And all the album lyrics. All this stuff is available together under one roof for the very first time. Read the breath-takingly wondrous sleeve notes so carefully put together for you, and just take it all in. And give us a break!! GB |

GB - Thanks for uncharacteristically constructive response. I hope you are you right about The Lot being corrected. You are correct that GT should be treated like a human being, as he has always attempted to civilly respond on QZ. I hope you continue to take the high road and continue to respond constructively no matter the provocation. |

Well said, Greg. I can't believe that people on QZ think that Greg Brooks or Gary Taylor have any say whatsoever in any of the product that is released, or how it turns out. The disc errors had nothing to do with either of them (the text errors in the book, on the other hand...); as Gary outlined in the other thread, he and GB assemble a product of how they think it should look before their bosses alter it to how THEY think it should look. Guess who's going to get the final say every time? Imagine if GB and GT had their way, we would have had a 10-disc singles box set that included nearly everything on it, we would have had the archives boxes years ago, the bonus discs on the 2011 reissues would have been packed with rarities, and so on and so forth. I agree that the disc errors are downright embarrassing, especially for a product so exorbitantly priced, but Greg and Gary are not the ones to blame for this – Virgin/EMI are. As Inu-Liger posted in other threads, contact them and demand replacements. Hurling abuse at a freelancer and an archivist are not going to solve the problem. |

I hope this makes the situation clearer, and further that it illustrates how ridiculous it is to blame GT for various things alleged to be his fault, when actually he was responsible for none of the decisions or proof-readings he gets abuse over.Unfortunately this is how dysfunctional this website's users are (although thankfully not ALL of them!). They're so used to seeing red when it comes to the LITTLE mistakes, that the fact this boxset's BIG mistakes have left them seeing multiple shades of red that have clouded their common sense so much, it didn't matter which front end "rep" they were going to attack, irregardless if you yourself were the usual favourite punching bag or not. Many people here perceive things that are very very far removed from the actual behind-the-scenes reality.Typical of binary minded people who don't take the time to research, never mind reach out to you or GT personally. It would be great if some of you QZ-ers thought a good deal more, did a little research first, before launching into ill-informed and unfounded criticisms of what you think Gary and/or me has done wrong, or should account for, or explain away, or defend, or apologise for. It is utterly crazy!A lot of apologies are overdue, but oh let's not remove something so inconvenient such as stubborn pride in order to make that happen, eh Queenzone? 'The Lot' is being fixed at this very moment. It's regrettable that errors crept in, of course it is.THANK YOU, Greg! This is wonderful news. And that said, I hope the record company and "Team RT" will be echoing this very very soon. Would be nice to calm down the hot headed fans and move on past this soon enough. |

Greg, you or Gary, please analyse the whole 'Errors' topic on this forum and inform about the problems the right person, who coordinates 'The Lot' project. Let's hope not only the 'Life Changes' issue will be corrected... |

Hi Greg, Thanks for your response, it's the kind of thing that fans appreciate. You signed off with "Give us a break". That is exactly what I was trying to say. My comments have been taken by you, in the exact opposite way I intended. Regardless of what GT's exact role is, or whether he is an emplyee, my points you have listed were in his defence. I was saying, "look, there are two sides to every story", but because no official statement was made that addressed the errors that were being discussed, criticism was leveled unfairly at others (ie, you guys). Because of that, I was saying was that you are, in a way, being thrown under the bus - because nobody else was coming forward to say "WE acknowledge all the errors and are sorry" - So you guys found yourselves in the firing line, because you are the only guys who make an effort to connect with the fans (which is very much appreciated by me, and countless others, I'm sure). I am not alone in having huge respect (and a certain degree of jealousy) for you and the job you do, but you said "It would be great if some of you QZ-ers thought a good deal more, did a little research first, before launching into ill-informed and unfounded criticisms of what you think Gary and/or me has done wrong, or should account for, or explain away, or defend, or apologise for. It is utterly crazy!" Greg, the Queen machine is so backward in coming forward, the forums are full of people doing research and theorising on all sorts of stuff. But research is hard when getting information out of the QPL is like trying to get blood out of a stone. It looks like the initial attitude was "Lets keep selling this, and hope that nobody notices the mistakes". Ultimately, Team RT should have come forward immediately and said "this was not the fault of X, Y or Z, it happened because of A, B and C". If that had happened, all this would have been avoided. Again, I stress the point that I was attempting to make people realise that if the mistakes don't all boil down you and GT, why is nobody from an official source clarifying that? It seems unfair on YOU if you ask me. That is all I was saying. I would like to add though, thank you for clarifying a few things, and you have done an excellent job in compiling the set. I have been enjoying it on Spotify very much, and despite the mistakes, I'm looking forward to getting a copy of it, if it gets an error-free release. |
Cockeye 14.11.2013 01:37 |
You and GT keep saying enjoy the CDs. I wish I could. But I never got it, and don't know if I ever will! |

Blimey. Hell's teeth!!!!!! Greg, I'm staggered - a great post. It'd be interesting to know exactly +what+ is being done and +how+ end-users will be recompensed, but I assume it is either too early or you don't know in order to say. It'd also be interesting to know +why+ the product was released in such a shambolic state, but I fear QPL is too embarrassed or simply doesn't care to allow an explanation. Thank you again, but, and it'll serve no purpose in the bigger picture, I will STILL refrain from ever purchasing a Queen or related product again. Errors like this should NOT go to market. |

I said, "Would you be demanding me to tell you about all my clients' personal bank details and private financial issues, if I was a Bank Archivist for Lloyds?" But that wasn't good enough. Still they expected me to tell them everything on demand, and have no respect for the job I do or the people I do it for. Some people have no concept of integrity. Then came the personal attacks, abuse, 2 death threats, and generally many people thinking it was fine to say and accuse me of everything and anything they liked. That is not acceptable and I'm not going to be a doormat for such idiot people. I wasn't having that. I stood up for myself, and gave back only as good as I got. It got very nasty very quickly, so I pulled away from all that rubbish. I view it as certain QZ-ers effectively cutting off their Queen noses in spite of their faces. Because now I tell them next to nothing, when I could impart much sometimes. Now... it's Gary who has to put up with the same kind of unfounded crap. It's a real shame that this position exists, but honestly it effects the genuine QZ-ers far far more than it does me. The comments were/are like water off a duck's back to me. Very eloquent, very nice and largely thoughtful, but it doesn't change anything: those errors are embarrassing. Bitter nitpickers who are never happy with anything and obsequious stepfords who are always happy with everything aren't the only two options here. Some people are honestly and rightfully outraged by those mistakes, as they flaunt an overall unprofessional work and lack of quality control. If I pay full price for a new car and I get it with broken windows, should I be kissing the dealer's feet because it still runs and still has comfortable leather seats, or am I entitled to complain about the broken windows? Assuming the ridiculous mistakes aren't indeed Greg's or Gary's fault, the fact remains the product's a joke (and not a good one) compared to what it could be (and hopefully will be). Give *us* a break. |

I hope Greg is right and the errors are being rectified. I hope that would also include the correct ext mix of Shove It appearing instead of the 2nd shelf mix again and if that's the case, perhaps they could find room for the original version of (fucking) Nazis and the Japanese promo version of "Dear Mr Murdoch". Whilst they may not have been available for everyone to buy, they WERE released officially on promo discs and should therefore have been included. It's just a shame that more unreleased stuff wasn't made available, though I suspect the only reason we got the few unreleased songs we did get on The Cross Singles disc is because they only had half a disc used (didn't stop them with the Queen remasters though did it?) Great collection of previously released material (everything sounds wonderful), but that's pretty much all it is, which is the disappointing bit. It could and should have been so much more. If only having a limited number of discs was an issue, then they should have done what every other artist under the sun does and issue the related additional material on the same disc as the album, leaving the other discs available for 'other' stuff. Sadly I've been a fan for too long and expect disappointment. Must be worse for Greg and Gary though, knowing what exists because they've seen it and heard it but knowing they'll only get copies themselves if it gets released :( |

I may be in the minority, but the fact that there even is a Roger Taylor box set filled with discs that sold minimally in the first place, is extraordinary. How many members of other bands would receive that treatment. I received my set the other day and, although I am not pleased that there are errors, it's a great package for anybody who is a collector or completist. By reading the posts, you would assume that high crimes and unbelievable damage were committed. The niggling over laying blame, wanting immediate answers, and character assasination is exhausting. This website has degenerated into something that is entirely based on negativity. ....and as far as rocknrolllover goes, everytime you respond to him you provide him with the forum to continue to rant and take a thread off topic. Ignore him and maybe he will go away.....and now I am guilty of the same thing, but this will be my first and last time addressing it. |

Guys, it seems this will be fixed. So QPL put out a faulty product but apparently they are doing something about it. The company should be ashamed of the awful mistakes, yes, but it's childish and plainly stupid to give Gary or Greg a hard time for it. How would you, Queen fans, feel if you had contributed to this project? Wouldn't you feel proud of what YOU did? Wouldn't you be frustrated that your contribution got diluted by poor proof-reading that wasn't part of your job? I can certainly see where Gary is coming from. He gave it all his best, did what he had to do and now some online forum assholes are being outright nasty to him. Let's not forget he posts here in his own personal time and not as a Queen Productions representative. He's a fan, like the rest of us. Now, if it was Jim Beach we were talking about I would probably think differently... |

Not really been keeping track of all the fuss about this, noticed my order had been put back till Dec... basically glad it's being fixed however's fault it was. And looking forward to hearing it. Mistakes happen, i'm guessing there was a lot...? but if they are being fixed prior to release, great. QPL have had something of a history of poor final checks so maybe this will give them a kick up the arse to sort that final stage out before shoving everything out. I spent my first years in a job working on an international business magazine, we used to get complaints from around the world if one word was miss-spelt, but it does happen, however you have to have a pretty good team of proof readers on a monthly publication so very few slipped through, its just about being professional, something that many companies these days fail at because we all live in a world were everything is done on the cheap. So GB and GT I will look forward to my copy and I'm glad it is being sorted prior to me opening it. |

I don't know about GB's original post..the only good (and important) thing about it was his confirmation that the errors/mistakes are being rectified. QZer's have not singled out GT or GB only. Mostly people have put the blame on the team (justifiably) and named Roger in addition to GT and GB. I think its natural, considering these are the known "faces" in the team, as far as QZ are concerened. The GT-specific statements quoted by GB are totally irrelevant and its interesting that GB felt a need to respond to those while our queries about officially announced releases go mostly unanswered. A lot of the fans found their satisfaction levels lowered due to the goof-ups, and QPL should take it on the chin and do a better job next time. |

Too hit the nail on the head is a bit hard, but I think all the frustration comes to the fact the QP is just like other big Music companies. A very 'Solid' 'Castle' which protects their property and communication(in every single way) to the outside world. The old days are over and businessformats and employeecontracts are top of the bill.. Every single farth has to go through a level of departsments till it reach the fans and friends of Queen and other bands. Unbelieve and anger are words that come with this unbelieve. Delayed Dvd's, shelved products, summier information and all those other things are nowadays very common in a large organisation as QP. As I understand this position of QP and all the employees of them, I find it utterly hard to find myself bands on the road who have another kind of communication with their public. I think the need for THATkind of relation is very important for a fan and friend of Queen who supported this band from the early days until 2013. I've done research work for another non-Queen website with regards to a CD catalogue database, and have discovered some alternate mixes for instance on some odd releases that a lot of people would have never noticed at first, as well as going above and beyond to obtain extremely rare releases in order to help further complete the aforementioned CD db. As for sound engineers, I have a buddy that has a certificate in that field, who has helped us out here with remastering a couple of audience audio tapes (Hyde Park '76 and Earl's Court '77 first night) to very positive reception. |

Let's call a spade a spade.. If the ten most knowledgeable people on QZ were put to work on official releases with the vault at their disposal, they would blow away most of the archival releases that QP have put out in the last decade. |

I know an excellent designer whose eye for detail is insane. Perfectionist is not the word. He is outstanding in his field :) |

I have got my money set to one side, so when the new box comes out, I will be buying, definitely. Looking forward to seeing the finished product that finally does Roger, Greg and Gary's hard work justice :D |

Off the top of my head for your consideration, GB: Inuliger, Sebastian, The Real Wizard, Gregsynth, Brian's Wig, and cmsdrums. Those are the first names to come to my mind based on my observations. |

I wrote a book on Queen, Greg. I would love to help out in any way I could. |

MERQRY wrote:If GB and GT were to have been paid to listen (and watch) the finished product as well proof read the liner notes, perhaps they would have found 95%+ of the mistakes. However, their review of the finished product was probably not in the budget, and QPL/Universal probably relied on full time employees who were probably unaware that Roger previously released solo material. Also, these employees probably have more responsibility than just for "The Lot" and are probably focused on more important things (not from the previous millennium). The Real Wizard wrote: Let's call a spade a spade.. Of course 10 Queen experts that volunteer to work for peanuts would do infinitely better than less experienced full time Universal employees. |

GB's comment has really injected life into this idea hasn't it? I agree with what Panchgani and Wizard said; Inu - you forgot to underline graphics designer :) |

GB: Queen Archivist wrote:This type of pre-release working team is clearly something I would be interested in, and I could certainly recommend one or two people I know that possess different skills which might also be suitable. Whilst I don't yet know any of our fellow Queenzoners personally, based on several years of interaction here there would seem to be some contributors here whose intimate knowledge of the band's output would certainly seem to be right for such a task too.ParisNair wrote: You obviously got what I was saying in my post (including the beginnig "I don't know about GB's original post.. Not asking if it can be implemented, cos its not in your scope to decide obviuosly. I'm just asking if you feel such a thing wold help bring out better products.GB: It's an interesting idea. If the ten most knowledgeable people on QZ were put to work on official releases with the vault at their disposal, they would blow away most of the archival releases that QP have put out in the last decade.Despite the fact that I'm with Bob on this one, I would like to point out one technicality: On QZ, the whole thing would fall down while we were trying to assemble the ten most knowledgeable people. There'd be three polls, seventeen flame-topics, two felonious publications of personal information, a death threat or two, and, admittedly, a brilliant fatty-satire. Assuming we'd get past that, the meetings to come up with the liner notes would quickly become marathon sessions as Sebastian goes anal over a number of important questions ("Deacon John" or "John Deacon", the authorship of every single Queen-song apart from Misfire, the exact string gauge on Crazy Little Thing Called Love and the correct name for the shade of blue of Roger's eyes), leading to several ulcers and an eventual homicide investigation focusing on the industrial food processor Sebastian was last seen at. Greg Brooks, by now unemployed and living in an upturned dumpster near Hammersmith station, would somehow get to a computer with internet access to launch into a spam war of such dimensions that it leads to a new Geneva convention and mandatory diazepam use for anyone visiting QZ more than twice a year. Resulting from the above stress, flame, character assassination and criminal investigations, the surviving members of the group of ten resign, leaving the task of writing the liner notes to....GT, the surviving members of Queen and an intern at QP who was unable to come up with a good excuse not to take part. So, in the end, the only benefit would be that GB is no longer involved in any way, being held at The Hague for crimes against humanity. |

If the ten most knowledgeable people on QZ were put to work on official releases with the vault at their disposal, they would blow away most of the archival releases that QP have put out in the last decade. It would be the same, believe me. Greg Brooks said it many times that the last word is from Brian, Roger, John(?) and Jim Beach. You can have all the experts in the world trying to help, but if the final decisions are made by the same persons, the end result would be the same. Remember what happened with the singles collection? - Greg Brooks had written the booklet to go with the boxes, but Jim, Brian, and Roger thought it was a good idea to release the boxes without the booklet, because of the economy at the time. Brian and Roger are musical geniuses, but they suck at creating excellent products - the Remastered 2011 Cd's is a good example of what they think is a Deluxe edition. Just search for other artists like ABBA and compare what a deluxe edition really is. Maybe now with Roger's "The Lot" they will realize that some things must change, because had this happened with a Queen Box-set, they would be in more trouble due to the quantity of boxes printed. And it wouldn't hurt them to listen to the fans for some ideas for their products. |
