Many people have been speculating here on QZ - as well as being personal and nasty again - about various things they think I did, or didn't do, or should have done, with Greg, on the RT box set 'The Lot'. It's quite simple. I co-wrote the detailed sleeve notes with GB for the main albums, singles and DVD. We took a lot of time and care over them to offer information and some little known details that had not been offered before. We came up with the basic audio content structure in the early days, contributed many ideas for content, researched the audio and video, as well as studio rarities and out-takes. We assembled a full RT/Cross discography and concertography, and lots of wonderful memorabilia. We did not put the CD track listings together at the front of the book, or those on the back of the slipcase. We did not design the book, or decide what memorabilia and photos would or would not feature. We didn't put the CDs or DVD together, or the lyrics for each album, and we did not proof read the final version. We did the best possible job we could and despite what some people on here have said/think, most people are pleased with the overall set. |

Thanks GT. This is what I had figured. It sucks that you feel you have to defend yourself. It's not exactly black and white. Work for QPL or not. Shame on those getting nasty towards GT. Be annoyed at the errors sure. Let your feelings be known...but let's not vilify someone who as far as we know was someone behind the GOOD parts of the box. From what I heard previously RT was happy just releasing barebone albums. His team convinced him on the 4 bonus discs. So thanks GT if you were part of that effort! |

GT, I'm not a frequent poster on the site and you may not be able to answer my question. The manufactuer's update infers that they are only dealing with missing/duplicate discs. If there are mastering issues as is being stated are those discs likely to be replaced? |

I am a long-term reader of this forum, but have only felt compelled to register to comment today. GT - I am sorry that all the hours / days / weeks / months of hard work you put into this set have been wasted, thanks to other people who took the project off your hands, and in doing so, made a right mess of it. However, what I can't understand is the last line of your response. If it had been me who had done all that work, only for it to be put out in the mess that it is, my response wouldn't be "Overall, most people are happy with the set." My reaction would have been: "After all the hard work we put in, it's been messed up royally by someone else, and I am just as angry about it as you guys". Reading some posts on here, I can see why you have had to defend yourself, and I get that. But why sign off with "most people are pleased with the overall set". Are you pleased with it? Really? Your work as an excellent archivist has been tainted by somebody else. I'd be livid. For the record, I've cancelled my order and got refunded. I'm not paying for shoddy products, no way. |
Cockeye 13.11.2013 12:17 |
GT - you were doing so well until that last sentence. Most are pleased with the overall set? And that is the attitude of most at QPL. Not giving a shit. Ignoring all the comments, and just assuming that most people are happy. Arrogance, in essence. Shocking. I was actually thinking you were coming across as a good guy for most of that post. And then you encapsulated the whole attitude of all those who rip off us loyal fans. |

I really was excited about it, and as it's my birthday next week, my wife allowed to to buy it as a present to me from her - but when I read that there were so many cock-ups, I honestly didn't want it. Instead, I listen to the tracks on Spotify. Only serious collectors would buy this set - and serious collectors don't stand for mistakes on collectors' sets. For the record though, I LOVE the tracks. It's just such a pity that the physical product is compromised. |

I have to agree with the consensus here - GT: I'm sorry you feel attacked, I'm very sorry that pieces of sh*t like rocknrolllover who go about flaming you haven't been banned yet, BUT I also find it improper and arrogant, not to say condescending to your customers and plain stupid from a business point of view, to respond to legitimate criticism of severe flaws in a product (flaws for which I, like most, do not hold you personally responsible) by going on an all-out defensive and saying what amounts to "people are buying it so bollocks to you". That I think is beneath you as a person, and unprofessional as a QPL employee. |

I Posted this is the other thread, but thought it was an important point to make in this thread too: GT might well be furious, but is unable to say that here, in case it puts his job at risk. With that in mind, he shouldn't have posted a response. Having said THAT, it must be hard to read negative comments and resist leaping to your own defence. GT's comment (the last line) was annoying to read, but he shouldn't have been put in that position. QPL should have set the record straight ages ago, but in staying silent, they effectively threw GT to the wolves. Has GT angered me? Yes, a little. But there is always more to every story than meets the eye, so ultimately GT's only fault is a hastily written post in response to frustrated fans. An official apology should be issued, along with a freshly produced set. |

Thanks GT. Can you please let us know who has written the erroneous and poorly worded resumes for each album on Roger's new website? In addition, can you comment on the Blue Rock info that some say is copied directly from Discogs, errors 'n' all?? After you, Greg, Josh etc do all your hard work, can you tell us who then rakes responsibility for the remaining pieces of the set? (EG anonymous people in a marketing dept at Universal, or someone else directly in Roger's employ?) Thanks |
PEG 13.11.2013 13:45 |

(EG anonymous people in a marketing dept at Universal, or someone else directly in Roger's employ?)Universal had no part in putting the set together. The set was delivered to Universal for manufacture and distribution and it wasn't Universals place to go through everything with a fine tooth comb - that should have been done by Roger's team. Mastering and text errors are not errors on Universal's part. It seems likely that no one in Roger's team is going to take responsibility. |

Someone did a bad job with this Box set, and i understand that you can't say that in public, but you know this to be true. I don't have the box, but i could not ever be happy with the box if indeed some songs have issues that aren't suppose to be there. Let me explain: My favorite album of Roger is "Electric Fire". I absolute love this album and i've listened to it many times. I can spot any errors EASILY , and if it's true that "Pressure on" has some backing vocals missing, it would ruin the experience for me. I rather not listening to it at all! What i and others would like to know is if the errors are going to be replaced, or if team Roger Taylor are going to allow a second rate product to hit the shelves. And to finish, i just want to point out to you the useless web site that was given to Roger Taylor. Someone is clearly taking the piss out of Roger Taylor, a man who stated many times that he doesn't use the internet very often. Roger deserves better from the people he has on his team, and if people believe that a site like that is a good idea, then i say that it is time for a change. He deserves better, and his fans deserves better too. So, i thank you for your explanation, but please discuss these topics and everything that's been said in Queenzone about what's wrong with the lot with your team and make every effort to fix it. We care for Roger and Queen as much as you and GB, and in this case the internet (Queenonline and Queenzone) can be a good vehicle for you guys to know witch errors there are, so you can fix it and release the best product possible. |

So, GT has admitted not proof reading it. But it remains ambiguous... Is he saying that somebody else was SUPPOSED to, but didn't, or is he admitting, "yes, I messed up, because I didn't proof-read it"? Oh, and hello Victor :) Yes, Queen is my fav' band, and RT is a hero to me. Been following them for donkey's years. Funny story: Just when I reached the stage of becoming a real fan (exploring beyond the greatest hits, etc), I started going out with a lovely girl, who took me home to meet her Mother. Her Mum asked me what my fav' band was, and when I told her, she said "follow me", and took me into another room where she opened a huge cabinet which was FULL of Queen stuff. There and then, she gave me a duplicate of RT's Foreign Sand CD single, and Blue Rock on cassette. I never thought it possible to love a Mother and a Daughter in equal measure, but it is :D |

I love my wife, but I don't always see eye to eye with her, if that makes sense. (??) I genuinely cancelled my box set order, because I don't want a set with errors, in the hope that a new version comes out. If it doesn't, that would be a pity, but not the end of the world, as I have 99% of the stuff anyway. But I hope it happens. :) I hope all is well at Team RT and that Roger takes all this frustration as a measure of enthusiam for his work, rather than a slating. |

GT - Thanks for explaining as much as you can what happened with The Lot. I know you don't have to and appreciate the effort. All - Amazon Canada have pushed the release date back to December 10th, so I'm hoping they get a fixed version out before Christmas but I'd rather wait a bit longer for a fixed version. It is a lot of money to pay, so you would expect some quality control. I recently bought the new Fish album 'A Feast of Consequences' and that was delayed because the manufacturer used cheaper paper stock for the book on the first printing. I'm pretty sure most if not all purchasers wouldn't have cared, after all, there was nothing to compare it with, but they put the release back until they could get reprints and instead sent a download link to everyone who bought the premium edition, so at least we didn't have to wait for the music. (The standard cd was still available to buy) Thing is, that was the artist himself making the decisions, I very much doubt Roger would get that involved. However his product team should have. This product was always going to be a one shot deal so a lack of quality control is surprising. Incidentally, the Fish album is surprisingly good, but the packaging of the deluxe edition is a thing of beauty and I'm glad they waited to get it right. You can see a picture here. link |

What saddens me is the lack of an explanation or reasons from QPL as to why Roger's career has been represented in this shambolic way. The outward appearance is of an organisation that simply doesn't give a monkey's toss about the content, what / who it represents and the people forking out their hard-earned for it. The demand CLEARLY shows the desire for product of this nature but it is, simply, of littl more value than drinks coasters. I am going to buy it anyway as overall the set looks decent and there is a lot of stuff on there I want. I do not have Mad Bad or Shove It on CD, and my Happiness CD is damaged. so for 3 albums + the new album, and the rarities and DVD, £80 is still not a bad price really. As soon as I receive it though I am going to start sending emails to Virgin complaining about the issues, and hopefully in time we will see some replacement discs for Blue Rock et al. Don't really care about the book, but the badly mastered discs I would like replaced. |

Clearly he had no involvement with the mastering but as it stands, that IS a pitiable amount of quality control going on with one of the worlds MOST FAMOUS/POPULAR bands. .. (*even if it's just solo stuff) This was presented in an archivist manner. It should have been treated as such and checked, checked, checked and again checked. GT wrote: Absolutely VK. In the meantime play the CD's in the box, including the superb new album, and listen to these wonderful musical gems from 1977 to the present day and everything in between and just enjoy the music. That's what I'm doing right now.Cheers Gary - your input and response IS appreciated by most; an open dialogue between the fans and 'the band' can only be a good thing, with positive and negative (but constructive) comments flowing both ways surely only leading to better product releases? Outside of, but related to, the box set, are you able to advise who we might possibly contact regarding the factual errors and grammatical mistakes on Roger's new website? It would be good if we can get confirmation that these have been pointed out and are being addressed too? I know that my following suggestion will never happen, but I've always been an advocate of having a select group (outside QPL and its employees) being given products to review, proof read, listen to etc.. in advance of release. I genuinely believe that a carefully selected group consisting of fans with expertise or knowledge in the key areas (some musicians, some graphic designers, some proof readers, some film makers etc..etc..) would mitigate against a lot of the issues we have experienced with multiple Queen releases across all formats. Whilst plenty will disagree with me, I honestly believe that a hardcore fan that is also a musician and is familiar with the catalogue WILL more easily pick up certain differences in mixes, missing parts etc.. than a hardcore fan with no musical background (cue agreement from some, and outrage from others!!) 'Focus groups' such as I suggest above happen in many other areas - from new toys being tested on children and parents, movies given pre-release showings to select audience groups to gauge reactions (following which endings are changed and scenes recut before release), advertisments tested on target audiences, food given trials runs or distributed as freebies on launch etc.... I really don't see why a band (not just Queen) can't or won't employ similarly accepted tactics to ensure that the content of their product is firstly 'right' for the targeted demographic, and secondly actually put together properly with no mistakes. My suggestions above (other than the website question)aren't aimed at you Gary, but aired as a general conversation/debate piece. Thanks |

It has Roger Taylor's name on it - perhaps he himself should check releases prior to release? Not such an "out there" suggestion - artists usually approve mixes/masters etc themselves. I think most artists releasing a career spanning boxset would read all the liner notes themselves to correct any errors too - you know, to make sure it's right! |

PEG wrote: So, GT has admitted not proof reading it. But it remains ambiguous... Is he saying that somebody else was SUPPOSED to, but didn't, or is he admitting, "yes, I messed up, because I didn't proof-read it"?It really wasn't ambiguous at all, unless you think he was also being ambiguous about whether or not he was supposed to design the book, finalise the tracklisting and assemble the DVD as well. It's patently obvious he meant proof reading it was not his job, which follows perfectly well when you consider that he wrote the sleeve notes, and writers don't proof read their own work. |
PEG 14.11.2013 09:05 |
Ok, looking back, I see what you mean about the ambiguity. Yes you are right. On your last point though, some writers do proof read their own work. I know this because I work with writers for a living every day. That's not me being funny, it's simply how some smaller teams operate. I do agree with you on your main point though :) |

cmsdrums: Not only have you hit the nail on the head, you have smashed it hard into the woodwork with a deafening "YEEAAAH!" If you get a focus group's input on a project, you are a long way towards a fantastic product immediately. If we ever get the pleasure of a Queen Anthology, it might be the way to go. And I reckon, with the kingdom united, it would be awesome. The Freddie box set is the benchmark by which subsequent sets have been, and will continue to be judged by. That was compiled by GB was it not? That was the best thing I have ever bought in my life :D |

Do you REALLY think the record label will expect people to buy the same box set TWICE? No. The most likely outcome is that replacement discs for the affected CDs will be offered to those who bought the box. |

Roger Taylor will say that these are minor issues that do not detract from the product which everybody loves anyway. There isn't going to be a corrected reprint either, and as long as we have 13 different discs in our lot, we won't be getting anything more from anybody. |

Sooo does anyone want to bash me for inquiring as whether or not the songs are "digitally remastered from the original master source tapes" again? I've been told it is absurd to ask such a thing because it is "so obvious" that that would be either a given or that it did not really matter. Does the box set say that the songs were? |

Well. Amazon are apparently sending my copy next week. I am fully expecting a faulty copy and if I do, if anyone wants that set let me know....my cost price was £86 |

I think GT and GB definately deserve major kudos for their time and effort that they do with each of the projects they're involved in. Here's something to think about...if not for them, there's a good possibility that BM and RT would NOT be working in the studio with leftover vocals from Freddie...tapes that they plain out and out forgot about. As I live in the US, I don't even know if The Lot is available in one form or another either for download or for physical purchase, but once the errors and such have been corrected, I will be making my purchase for sure! |

I have to agree that a musician may pick up some things in mixes that others may not, although how anyone could sit through tape slippage day in day out whilst mastering and not notice is beyond even me....! |

As for the website - I've written to the person responsible about the browser compatibility issues, didn't mention the faulty descriptions, I hope they'll finally check it. |
