Huge images of the late star recreating his famous 1985 Live Aid appearance will be projected on to the set and Queen will perform with singer Jessie J Queen legend Freddie Mercury will be the star attraction at tomorrow's Olympics closing ceremony – as he’s brought back to life as a hologram. Huge images of the late star recreating his famous 1985 Live Aid appearance will be projected on to the set at the grand finale. His band Queen will then take to the stage to perform We Will Rock You with singer Jessie J. An Olympic source said last night: “It’s going to be spectacular – a proper recreation of Freddie’s chanting crowd interaction from Live Aid all those years ago.” The source said band members Brian May and Roger Taylor were thrilled about the tribute to their friend, who died of Aids in 1991, adding: “Freddie will once again have the world in the palm of his hands.” More than a billion people around the globe are expected to watch the proceedings live from East London. A massive panorama of the capital’s landmarks (shown above) has been created away from the stadium and is being assembled on the site for the party tonight. Record four-gold winning sailor Ben Ainslie, 35, has been chosen to be Team GB’s flag-bearer. Ben said: “It’s a really proud moment for me – and for sailing.” Ben will join Britain’s other Olympic heroes including Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Bradley Wiggins – as well as 10,000 athletes from all over the planet. They will be invited to dance in a mosh pit in front of performers including Annie Lennox, Madness, Pet Shop Boys and One Direction. The show, to be attended by Prince Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge, will include quintessential British comedy with Del Boy’s three-wheel Reliant van from Only Fools and Horses and a performance of Monty Python’s Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life. There will also be a greatest hits set by the Spice Girls, which Victoria Beckham has declared will be the band’s last appearance. Victoria said: “This is our swansong – and what better way to go out on top than at the Olympics.” A source close to the girls confirmed that they nearly all agreed tonight had to be the end. “They all have lives to go back to and everyone apart from Geri Halliwell agrees,” he added. “She’d tour every year if she had it her way – she loves being a Spice Girl.” We can reveal the girls’ manager Simon Fuller has broached the subject of getting together for another tour. But the band, who perform on top of LED-covered London black taxis tonight, turned down the idea. Take That frontman Gary Barlow will be on the stage for a performance of Rule The World in what is expected to be one of the most emotional parts of the spectacular proceedings. The brave star has battled through one of the toughest weeks of his life after he and wife Dawn lost their baby daughter Poppy. A source close to the singer and X Factor judge said Gary decided to go ahead with the appearance because he didn’t want to let his fans down. The source said: “It’s going to be incredibly tough for Gary. But he will do it. They haven’t had time to rehearse but they’re pros at big live performances and won’t let Team GB down. He’s literally going to turn up, sing and leave. And the boys will be supporting him.” George Michael and hairdresser boyfriend Fadi Fawaz will host a glittering bash at his North London home following his performance. The singer’s guests are expected to include supermodel neighbour Kate Moss – who will walk the runway in a tribute to British fashion with Naomi Campbell, Georgia May Jagger and Lily Donaldson. George admitted last night he is nervous ahead of his performance of Faith and Freedom but quipped he is more worried about his waistline on camera to billions across the world. George revealed: “Got to admit I’m pretty nervous. It’s been all about getting in shape and making sure I look good in front of the one and a half billion people who are watching. “You wouldn’t want to be fat at the Olympics closing ceremony.” The singer, who releases new single White Light today, also said that he’s glad the Games are raising his profile. “It’s definitely a great way of showing people that I’m still here – you know internationally that’s a fairly big presence,” he laughed. “I better be on form.” Jessie J will be the star with the most air time throughout the evening’s proceedings, performing four songs – her own hit Price Tag, duetting with Tinie Tempah on Written In The Stars before the pair perform a Bee Gees tribute singing You Should Be Dancing and finally joining Queen. London 2012 chairman Lord Coe, who has watched a rehearsal of the show, said yesterday that the theme at Stratford will be “party, party, party”. Show organisers started with a track list of 1,000 songs for the ceremony which they whittled down to 30. The songs include The Clash classic Should I Stay or Should I Go, West End Girls by the Pet Shop Boys and Oasis track Wonderwall. Artistic director Kim Gavin, who has put the show together, vowed: “We want to make it the best after- show party there has ever been. One of my favourite elements is the fact the athletes will be there in the centre and people watching will be able to try to spot their favourite one. “Rehearsals have gone well but it has not been easy. We have basically been putting the show together in a car park in Dagenham where it has rained every day.” Kim added: “After the amazing opening ceremony and the brilliant Games there is double the pressure to put something on extra special. ‘I just want to do justice to the athletes and the people of Britain. It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it...” More than 4,100 performers, including 3,500 adult volunteers and 380 children from the six East London host boroughs, will be involved in the ceremony. The action kicks off at 9pm on BBC1 with Julian Lloyd Webber performing Elgar’s Cello Concerto followed by Ray Davies’ Waterloo Sunset. link |

Boy, this is a big big risk. At Live Aid they had the advantageof people (non-fans included) having seen the Radio Ga Ga videoand almost had an inkling of what to do. Now tha's not the case (maybe in UK Queen are still very relevant?) So its either going to be a big hit, or people will not "get it" and will be a huge flop. |

of course it'll be fine. WWRY is a world-wide Sporting Venue anthem....the American's adopted it first and it spread...so what better place for it to be played than bringing the curtain down on the biggest sporting event in the world? just hope the technology doesn't crash....just imagine some stage hand hurriedly rebooting a the server and repeated CTRL-ALT-DELs ...to no affect |

Watching the program right now...and so far Lennon and Bowie gave their performances from the screen. Over-all i must say i'm not impressed too much. But that coud be becos of the sound mix in the telecast. rihg tnow russel brand is on the stage.... |

Thought the Freddie thing was amazing...shame they edited the 'fuck you', although i knew they had to. I don't understand why Brian felt a guitar solo would hold the audiences attention for that long? It was cringe-worthy...could have got another guest singer to sing 'We Are The Champions' in that time. Might get criticism for that comment, but it's for a mainstream audience...that's why Brian didn't get a solo at Live Aid. |

Was that a new solo from Brian, yawn, no need, FFS. Jessie J was fine in my opinion, She is a real talent and has a fantastic voice. It wasn't perfect, but far better a real musician sings with them than Glambert. |

It was really nice to see Freddie and also to hear the first part of Bohemian Rhapsody played. I thought Jessie J was ok never heard about her before she has an amazing voice. Brian shouln't have played that solo though I found people reacted well to it (probably not t.v. audiences) I was hoping for We Are The Champions. The whole ceremony was kinda boring! |

I had my Live Aid moment watching the queen segment yesterday (actually today morning 03:15 am my time- I slept 2 hours and then woke up to a manic monday :( ) I am exaggerating ofcourse, but i hope u understand the sentiment. This was the first time ever that i saw queen play in real time. I stated earlier (so did others) that the sound did not seem quite right during the telecast, but when brian started his solo somehow the volume and soudn quality went up a notch, atleast in my head. to me, brians solo was the high-point of the whole show. Actually in my opinion the whole show was a no-show, except for Brian's solo and freddie's bits. In my opinion WWRY was far from being the worst performance of the night. Eventhough it does not hold a candle to even brian singing the song by himself. It was nice to see George Michael on the stage (i thought he was very ill is what i's heard somewhere) but his performance was mediocre. Actually that could be said about all the performaers, except Brian (and roger...though he had avery small part). All looked old. And Muse.....well they did not look too good to me. There was no joy in their playing....it was the closing ceremony of the grandest sportign event ....a celebration....but Muse looked angry. In that way...the old-timers looked like they had the right idea. |

I was in the stadium last night and the whole Queen bit went down very well in the venue itself. The screens with Freddie were very effective. Much better than I imagine a small hologram standing in the middle of the stadium would have been. Brian's solo really sounded great in the venue and to be honest it did not really matter who was singing WWRY, that song with Brian and Roger will always get the desired result. The audience lapped it up and in my view Jessie J did a reasonable enough job. Apparently from what people tell me there were problems with some of the sound on TV, but in the stadium it was really good throughout. |
queenUSA 13.08.2012 06:25 |
Glad the night built up to them, it was musically fitting and pleasing. Visually, the wide shot of Brian and Jesse J approaching from opposite ends of the stage was a thrill. These days I try not to be so comparative to the past because it can drive a persons expectations to bits. Just let it unfold and see what's on for the night. Any moment with Queen is glorious versus a moment without. Finally a stylist got hold of Brian and he had on a proper ensemble to match this special night with a specially designed coat and new shoes to match (I like this new red & black thing going on with Brian (perhaps Adam has sneaked into his wardrobe closet and lent a hand to get it sorted and updated)). Brian's fabric tribute to the wildlife of Great Britain was so Brian May - a reminder to GB that there's room for badgers and foxes (and some hedgehogs too) on team GB! For anyone not satisfied - try watching the horrendous Brazilian portion that came after. Well then, they've got 4 years to work that bit because it was soooooooooo awful. A real snoozer. Imagine 16 days of that torment! |

Since youtube is taking links down, here is the NBC link for the closing music segment: link Freddie's sing along begins at 1:04:33 Comments: nice that BoRhap was used yet again, this time to start. But NBC does not include it here (figures). Don't know why they had to cut out part of the sing along to Wembley (Live Aid?!?....oy) The crowd really enjoyed it and played along. Dave Grohl was right, only the Pope and Freddie can have such mastery and control over a large crowd. We were floored by this bit and the performance. Had the stereo on for this part. Jessie J did not go all crazy with too many ad libs, her performance was more than fine and fit in quite nicely. Brian.....I wish he would use just a touch of Grecian Formula, as the all gray is still a shock, but.....damn......great outfit, a short (for him) Brighton Rock solo, Roger with the timponis.......... To see them 'live' again, ...an unexpected thrill. But, of course, no comments in our local paper, and very little in the States of the show stealing moment. Just like Live Aid. Overlooked here, but the tops everywhere else. Even now, there is still a special kind of magic.... |
cmsdrums 13.08.2012 10:06 |
You got to laugh at Brian saying beforehand he'd be doing something 'live and dangerous without a safety net'. I presume by that he means a snippet of the guitar solo he's been playing live to hundreds of thousands of people for the last 40 years?!! |

NBC showed Queen here in the midwest and then they went through the extinguishing of the Olympic flame. Then they ran a stupid new shit-com with a grinning monkey in a lab coat and the local news for an hour and then they came back and had the Who performing. At what point were they performing in the closing ceremony? NBC has done some real lame things lately. And what did you think of that illuminated Phoenix over the Olympic flame as they went into the extinguishing of the flame part? I couldn't help but see it as Freddie's presence - it made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Surreal. |

Well, since i live in the US i didst watch it live but luckily found a video stream online. First of i am an old/long time Queen fan and in general excepted the fact that there is no Queen without Deacon/Mercury so i haven't heard or watched any of the Paul Rodgers stuff. For me Queen is retired. Now for something as the Olympics i don't mind if they perform with somebody else. The Freddie thing from 86 Wembley was nice and i expect it to go over well with a London audience, Brian's solo was nice of course based on Brighton Rock we heard and seen it many times but he is a great player. As far as We will Rock you goes it was terrible, couldn't they find a more rocking voice gosh a rock singer?? Bruce Dickinson is a Brit aint he? Overall i understand that the ceremony was going to show British culture and Rock music is a big part of it but it's about time that these dinosaurs are retiring. Ive seen the Stones and Who at super bowls and i love and admire them but please yall suck now just stop playing " hope i die before i get old" sheesh Townsend listen to yourself, it's embarrassing . Of course i was saddened, very saddened when Freddie passed on but there is something about not being able to ruin your legacy . The next time i want to see Elton, Queen , The Who , McCartney is when England gets the World Cup and since that might be decades away we might be spared. Btw, am i the only one who is a bit afraid that Roger Taylor is in danger of a Sheer Heart attack being behind these drums??? |

The Sun newspaper (reporter Oliver Harvey) on the ball factually as usual: "Carrying the torch for British rock, Brian May and Roger Taylor performed Queen classic Brighton Rock". So - just to recap, they didn't mention that they played We Will Rock You, and the snippet of guitar solo based loosely on parts of a not widely known Queen song, now becomes a 'classic', played in full, with Roger on it. Please stop using the name Queen for a 2 man band. To bring Freddie back alive with a hologram was great, but don't perform with other singers. It's a disgrace, |

For me Brian was kind of a comic character....his laughable outfit with that patch (was it a fox or a badger?). Music was like always - "We Will Rock You", this time with an international widely unknown chick on vocals....after jerking the guitar with parts of Brighton Rock. They're killing the name of Queen again and again and again. What about a new book "From Killer Queen to Queen killer" ???? I was disappointed with the show, no a good presentation of the great british music. Only patchwork - like "Queen" is today. |

I also watched the live feed early in the afternoon. NBC cutout I believe all performers after Queen (Ray Davies, Muse, the Who)so as far as the US knew Queen ended the music tribute ( which is cool in my opinion) Now days like another poster stated, I enjoy the moment as it evolves,I too loved Brian playing and walking up the ramp very dramatic! I am not a fan of female vocalists but I take this as Jessie J supposedly the hotest person in pop right now paired up with the old rock royalty of Queen. I didn't really pay attention to her, but enjoyed watching Brian and Roger. I too was hoping for a roger solo! It is ALWAYS nice to see Queen on American TV. |

1968!!! that solo...definitely...because the Brighton rock solo started life on the Smile track "Blag".... so shame on you Brian...a 44 yr old guitar solo |
john bodega 13.08.2012 13:08 |
Brian was fine. It's somewhere between musical ignorance and tone deafness to say it's the 'same' solo, because it isn't, but the fact that he did it in the first place was a bit silly. So he got to try some subtly different harmonies - good for him, but being that it was the Olympics he might've given that time to something else. Still, Brian, you've finally made it - you were on the same bill as The Who! Jessie J was a squawking moron. Muse were an utter fucking joke. In between a mimed guitar solo and the dumbest lyrics on the planet, I was seriously wondering what the fuck I was watching. Thank God the Who showed up at the end to give this shit some respectability. |
brENsKi 13.08.2012 13:22 |
i never said it was "the same solo", i said "it started life on BLAG"...which makes it's origin 44 yrs old of course there are going to be sublte differences...but impying it was anything very different is like saying that "golden delicious" is so far removed from apple to be almost a potato when watching it, all i could think was "ffs Brian, do something different..not this again?...and get a fucking haircut you look like catweazle" |
cacatua 13.08.2012 13:24 |
So NBC cut others out altogether. Yeah, I didn't see Muse. They went to extinguish the Olympic flames right after Brian. It seemed fitting to me that they had saved the best for last, and now I'm finding that NBC axed or relocated others, and all so they could jam that grinning monkey down our throats, at which point we switched channels. There's opposing groups beginning to raise a little hell over Brian making a political statement about the foxes and badgers in his coat design. That sort of thing may keep him from getting invited to appear at something else. I enjoyed seeing him, whatever he was playing, all dressed up, and Roger with his bank of kettle drums. Didn't appreciate Jessie J, so pretty much ignored her caterwauling. |

I thought that was the Queen logo on the back of Brian's coat that I kept gettting a glimpse of but it is this: |

Brian's coat (and oufit) reminds me of harry potter's quidditch team, anyone? |
AdamMethos 13.08.2012 21:17 |
I would think that people "raising hell" over Brian's political statement was the intent. Otherwise why do it? |

AdamMethos wrote: I would think that people "raising hell" over Brian's political statement was the intent. Otherwise why do it? Precisely what I thought! And what a better way to draw attention to the cause than to take advantage of the Olympics appearance, which would be viewed probably by millions, to make a statement that way :-) |

Well I guess - he went to no small amount of trouble and expense, having that elaborately looong-tailed evening coat outfit made up to poke them in the eye! A lot of others think it was a grand idea. Interesting to see how it plays out. |

I would love to know what Deacon thinks. If I could have been a fly on any wall, it would definitely be his. |

A lot of others think it was a grand idea. Interesting to see how it plays out.My concern is the same as it always is - that his passion outperforms his judgement and effectiveness on this issue. One can admire the commitment and cheek in co-opting the world stage for a personal cause, and find it curious and a little off putting at the same time. I did raise an eyebrow at the incorporation into the stylized Q. Queen belongs to four people, and I did question the merging of a personal/political issue with band imagery. He's done it with Save Me as well, but that was his song. It's not just his 'Q'. :) I do appreciate the thought he puts into his outfits for these grand occasions though, however they come off. To me it means he's still engaged with something that's vitally Queen, or vitally Brian May, or vitally rock star or performer, or something. As a fan you can't help but respond to that when it feels as authentic as it does. |
cacatua 14.08.2012 06:35 |
Yes, I know what you mean, GratefulFan. He seems to have reached a point where he has placed Save Me at a higher priority than Queen. He said as much recently in that he would rather be remembered for defending animals than for music. Perhaps it is time he went on his own and disassociates himself from Queen in order to do this. I sometimes wonder if he is able to psychologically make that break. |

Also I thought Elton John and Rolling Stones were surprising omissions (unless they are unable to perform due to health issues and such). And Heroes should have been the Bowie song instead of Fashion IMO. |
brENsKi 14.08.2012 15:58 |
i think this is about the limit of available time and fitting 50 yrs of british pop culture in bowie fitted nicely into the supermodels section... as for the stones....and elt? can't explain that one |
OwenSmith 19.08.2012 13:20 |
I was surprised at the Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here" only having Nick Mason on drums and no other Floyd members. Dave Gilmour and Roger Waters are both still around and finally just about on speaking terms. There were other odd choices for the night. David Bowie not actually present, bands I've never heard of (who are Muse?) and so on. In the grand scheme of things the Queen section was quite sensible. And I quite liked Jessie J, shame her mic had hideous echo on it for the first half of We Will Rock You. Somebody seemed to notice and turned the echo off for the second half. At least Jesse J stole from Freddie's wardrobe ideas. That diagonal one arm one leg leotard is exactly the sort of thing Freddie wore many years ago. |

So... has there been any commentary/controversy in the UK over Brian's fox/badger coat? From my vantage point here in Canada, it seems that it was generally not noticed and ignored. |
cacatua 22.08.2012 06:34 |
Yes, he was criticized a great deal by the country folk in the UK for using the Olympics to make a political statement. Save Me released their own statement saying that the costume celebrated British wildlife by depicting a variety of birds and animals (the others were on the back of his coat, arranged loosely on the pattern of the Queen logo). The controversy seems to have prety much blown over by now. |

Muse USED to be one of the biggest bands in the country. Unfortunately all the momentum they had has been evaporated since they haven't shown their faces anywhere bar that horrible performance on the olympics for years now. |
