I've heard that the concert will be broadcast on TV in the Ukraine, Poland AND Holland! Is anyone capable of recording the transmission stream itself and extracting it to the computer inorder to keep the high quality? If not, do you all have Tivo type boxes that will record the transmission onto a hard drive that you can then edit and burn onto multiple DVDs at the highest quality? As you may appreciate, we all need to avoid the situations we had in 2008 where the only TV broadcasts (Ukraine & South America) had 2.5 hours on a single DVD in poor quality. |
pittrek 29.06.2012 08:23 |
When will the concert actually be ? |
c-lebrity94 29.06.2012 10:29 |
It will be tomorrow! |

@inu - I was aware Elton John would be playing, I just thought he was the headliner. I assumed (incorrectly) that Queen + would be first up. Still, he is not to bad. |
inu-liger 30.06.2012 12:45 |
Yeah he's doing really good! Usually he sounds a little rough on the first two songs in his shows before his vocals loosen up. Maybe he did some vocal warmups backstage? |
Adam Unger (QueenVault.com) 30.06.2012 12:51 |
I'm enjoying Elton's set. He came through and played here at the University last year. He did a 3 hour set; absolutely fantastic! Sure as hell beat The Fray when they came through and did their 52 minute set. |

Thanks for the links guys, watching now. Started watching in the middle of "Sacrifice", what else has Elton played so far? Have to admit, his current croaky voice sounds good on "Sad Songs", it even fits it. I'm surprised he hasn't deteriorated further, considering the amount of gigs he plays per year. |

"But what's wrong with Roger ?" I'll have to have a listen when it's available in better than streaming quality. The thing is they are playing a couple of things they haven't done since the 70's or early 80's, and we're likely used to hearing a lot of fills that he would've dropped years ago because of advancing age. Don't Stop Me Now is on. |

Good to get Roger up for the duet. I'm noticing that a bit of youth on the drums also helps the sound! Lambert lacks a little of the grit that I like hearing in that song, but at least he got his high note! And there's more onstage charisma when he has someone to play off. Ooh, an F-bomb! |

A bit rusty all around, but then again they don't play live constantly. I'm enjoying this show and for one will close my ears to any oddities, I also like that Lambert is being himself on stage, those who expect an imitation of F.M can stick to watching tribute bands. |

Roger is really dragging the tempo down. He was struggling to keep up with the synth's tempo at the start of this song. And he was lagging behind Brian on '39. Hit the gym, son! |

IT'S THE MOST ANNOYING VIBRATO IN THE WORLD !!!! |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 30.06.2012 16:17 |
Guys, this is their FIRST gig together. I repeat, does anybody remember QPR at George, South Africa? Or, for that matter, have you ever compared Return of the Champions with Super Live in Japan? It takes time for people to get used to play with one another. Remember Amsterdam 2002? Give them some time, they are doing fine for a start. I am gladly surprised. But I still hate the vibrato. :) Cheers, Ogre- |
MAYniac91 30.06.2012 16:17 |

john bodega 30.06.2012 16:18 |
Hearing some really shitty backing harmonies. "does anybody remember QPR at George, South Africa? " Yes I do. Wasn't much of a fan of most of the gig, but I'll say this much - coming out of the gate at the start, Paul Rodgers made a hell of a better impression on me. At least there was some energy. Obviously this can get better with repetition and whatever, and maybe Roger can work on his fitness. But I mean, there's a lot wrong here. |
GratefulFan 30.06.2012 16:19 |

If Adam the lamb had the stage charisma, presence and ability to entertain from Robbie Williams, this could be pretty good. Oh, and if he'd stop jerking off with his voice. But enough with the negativity, this has been extremely entertaining and I think they can only get better with further shows. Roger, however, can only get slower. Sorry Rog, you're done with Queen.... |

I feel like I've taken brown acid. Honestly I wasn't so pissy with the first half of the show but Adam's made a few too many artistic choices in this set that I am less than impressed with. Putting it lightly. He's not crap by default - he's doing stuff out of choice that just doesn't work. |

Hey, but I'll give this a solid 7/10. Lots of room for improvement. Brian was good, but his vocals were weak, but then again he isn't exactly 21 anymore, and he has never had the best vocal technique. Whereas, the dude with the vocal chops should stick to singing the notes and K.I.S.S, no need to jerk off just because you can. Just because you have a dick, doesn't mean you have to touch it all the time. |

Pleased with the first half. Setlist was great up until after the Guitar Solo. Compared to Queen + PR in George 2005 this was great, but on it's own merits I would rate it as okay for a first show. Hopefully they can bring out more interesting songs and better performances by Hammersmith. |

yeah, the first part of the show was ok; at least we got some songs we weren't used to get. The 2nd section ... well, predictable. Don't want to criticize Adam too much; he did some things well, and some not that well. Overall I enjoyed the gig and I'm glad I did it, as I was veeeeery far to expect I could do it. |
Hank H. 30.06.2012 16:59 |
Well, some amazing performances (AOBTD, STL), many average performances, some horrible performances. Not bad at all for a first gig. Some nice surprises setlist-wise, but not enough to really excite me - actually a mostly expectable setlist. Adam's great singer for sure, the vibrato sucks though. He's not gonna be a favourite, but honestly: Never in his wildest dreams could Freddie perform some songs the way Lambert just did. I'm not saying he was performing better, certainly not, but strictly technically speaking he's just amazing. |

The beginning of the show was great with the resurrected 70's classics and a focused and rather streamlined Adam. Then it went down from there with the predictable greatest hits and Adam relying increasingly on his annoying tricks. He can hit the high notes, and he's not nearly as often off-key as I thought he would (he was a little at the beginning of TSMGO), if he just cut on the vibrato and the pointless Wooohoaaaaaheeeeheeee demonstrations he could be great. All his interactions with the crowd fell flat though (the seventeen ass jokes after FBG and erm, AOBTD, embarrassing) Bri and Rog did the job but seemed a tad out of shape and practice, hence the dragging tempos and Bri's very weak LOML Roger sang great, though. He even foud the time to remind Bri of TYMD second verse. Another Brian fail. Dr May did some great solos however : DSMN, TATDOOL, STL, WWTLF. And he didn't have a second player to compensate like on the QPR tours Nice of Brian to include a couple more Freddie songs (SSOR, DSMN, STL) even if we got LOADS of songs from him (that lounge version of Dragon Attack I could have lived without) The unknown loser crapping on WRRY : we are not amused Conclusion: It was a first gig after all, get Adam's singing under control and come to Paris, guys ! |

I went to 2 Extravaganza gigs and Martel and the rest were all so technical, but the best one was Jeff, who could not sing as technically good as many of them. Jeff Scott Sotto had the right feeling, the right punch, I must say. But, commercially speaking, I don't think B and R could give up on Billboard's number one in favour of Jeff. Sadly enough. All in all, Adam did surprise me in a good way. I feared the worst, but he delivered a good gig. Sometimes I could even see him striving to contain his vibrato, I swear. Cheers, Ogre- |

Singing notes that don't belong...As you mentioned the vibrato, the most important thing that makes a great singer sucks....I think he'll be remembered for being a talented singer, but not a unique voice like Mercury and Plant. Just saying: Roger's AKOM was his best live vocal ever in a Queen song. He did amazingly good. |
tomchristie22 01.07.2012 02:10 |
Yeah, Roger's lead vocals were definitely the highlight for me. Shame Brian wasn't in as good form, but he made up for it by kicking ass on the guitar so it's forgivable. |
dysan 01.07.2012 02:20 |
Bizarrely, a highlight for me was WWTLF - never a favorite song, but christ on a bike, it was very very strong vocally, something Queen never did in '86. I'd drop the bad 80s touches (rubbery bass, AWFUL piano sound etc) and we've got a gig on our hands. |
tomchristie22 01.07.2012 02:38 |

And that Medusa chap didn't post once! They started that synth backing on acoustic tunes in the 80s, and that's where it should stay. If they want to fatten up the sound, I'm sure Spike could do some Mike Garsonesque florishes. |
Holly2003 01.07.2012 03:32 |
When Brian and Roger are doing their stuff they're still a force to be reckoned with. I thought the duet drum solo with Rufus was good, even though it looked like Rufus dropped his stick at one point. Lambert was a mixed bag: WWTLF was very good, and the duet with Rog for UnderPressure was excellent. STL was, however, a train wreck, and many other songs just didn;t sound that great as quite often he was off key and his phrasing is too "cabaret" rather than rock. At times this was like a musical theatre production rather than a rock show. His banter between songs was cringeworthy. On the plus side, Brian looked like a legend with his monster double guitar, and he played very well all night. Roger looked fit and up for it. Minus points: rotten piano and synth sounds and weak bass (played well, but didn't sound that great). |
dysan 01.07.2012 03:49 |
Agreed. Although I'd say Queen were always cabaret rock so AL is still kind of on message. And yes, I hate myself for saying that. |

dysan wrote: Agreed. Although I'd say Queen were always cabaret rock so AL is still kind of on message. And yes, I hate myself for saying that. There were certainly elements of cabaret in Queen -- sometimes in very large doses -- but Lambert is ALL cabaret. When he reigns it in he sounds better. Trouble is, he rarely reigns it in. He's not a rock singer. |
dysan 01.07.2012 04:12 |
Yeah. Although I'd say the worst bits where when he sings 'shh' instead of 'ess'. Dunno if anyone noticed that. Could start a good AL drinking game. |
Cruella de Vil 01.07.2012 04:46 |
Sounds like a couple of legends fronted by a leather-clad Ken doll! The man has a strong voice, he has range but there is a limit to his taste and musicality. There is a certain emptiness to his singing and posturing that doesn't ring true. Vocally Roger was in good form, especially AKOM. Tempos on some songs (Dragon Attack) were surprisingly slow, but he drummed the shit out of I want it All. Dr. Bri had some great lead work in there too. So, good to see them having fun yes, but I always thought that Paul Rodgers had some personal integrity and cred as a rocker and some bloody fine songs of his own that took on new life under the Queen machine. The union felt real; this feels synthetic and created out of a matter of convenience ('he has a good voice'). Let's see what the next shows bring. As Roger said once, Rude Fun to you all! |
dysan 01.07.2012 04:53 |
Cred as rockers is something Queen didn't have until about 2005 then. |
BlackQueen69 01.07.2012 04:59 |

Terrible, terrible, terrible, the biggest mistake in the Queen history... This guy has a voice, but he doesn't sing, he cries and looks like his dog died today... Sorry this is worse than all artists which played together with Queen - incl. Will Young, Anastacia or Robbie Williams. |
Fireplace 01.07.2012 07:25 |
At least Paul Rodgers can count to four(Fat Bottomed Girls, second verse). I reserved judgement until I actually heard them play, but this was quite enough. I'll take Paul over Lambert any day. |
pma 01.07.2012 09:25 |
Seriously, they should have played the acoustic version of "Aftermath" with Lambert before '39 and have "the lamb" sing backing on '39. |
GratefulFan 01.07.2012 10:33 |
pittrek wrote: Lacking something ... Maybe talent ?To me it's not talent that he's lacking. He just has impaired instincts for what a song needs, none at all for what it doesn't need, and he attempts to paper over the gap between what he is as a singer and what a rock singer is with too much of just about everything. As always with live concerts, the the whole thing suffered for the replays. Listening back this morning was a fairly rough experience in terms of Lambert's contribution. I think there was a total of two, maybe three songs where I genuinely feel it worked. People attending in person should be satisfied enough though, unless he really loses the plot. |
cmsdrums 01.07.2012 11:22 |
Based purely on video evidence: As much as I was really sceptical, and Lambert's vibrato is still uncalled for in places, I am pleasantly surprised and impressed. Yes, his voice is quite thin in tone compared to a lot of rock singers, but at least he seems to have learned the words, and as importantly the melodies, in a couple of weeks' rehearsal, which is more than Paul Rodgers could be bothered to do over three years. Brian in particular has really upped his game too in the last few years - when he wasn't very active he appeared on occasional guest spots and seemed ill at ease and lacking practice and unable to jam without simple mistakes. Recent tours as Queen and alone with Kerry Ellis, along with a new found comfort and relaxation on stage, has improved his playing no end - I was dubious about Jamie not being there this time but am glad to be proved wrong. |

My humble comments: If you are too bothered to read, here's a short resume: he's much better than Paul in some (most?) moments, but still not *the* man. It might be fine tuned, though. The guy definitely has some technique, but... this is not a voice contest, FFS. Try to control that vibrato, kid! Maybe it will happen someday, with a little more stage experience? Who knows. It seems that he's trying to compensate his non-existant stage presence with the technique. But it doesn't work like that. I'm not an expert in voice techniques and all that stuff, but I think that he might even waste his voice too soon if he keeps overusing it like that. He fits perfectly with songs like WWTLF, which was a nice surprise at the start but then it was annoying at the end. When it needs to be a little more powerful, this is when the "strangled sheep" sounds come in, it sounds like he's about to explode in a cloud of feathers and glitter. I can compare it to that perfectly distorted and powerful guitar, but turn it up a notch and it will become a mass/mess of feedback and will sound like a killer bee attack instead. With Adam, I think we would have the chance to listen to a couple classics that were left behind (IMHO White Queen, YTMBA and even Killer Queen can sound quite interesting with him, and why not LOML?), and it's good to hear these high notes again. But when the songs have a little more drama... things are out of control, and the guy really overdoes it. Save me for example... it can be a mess, same for it's a hard life. I'd rather not have these in the setlist. Oh, the same applies for TSMGO. OK, it's sort of an important song in Queen's history, but it's enough, it's time for it to rest, live at least. On the other hand, we will probably never get a good version of some rock songs, this is why stuff like TYMD was given to Brian, for example. Adam seems to be missing the (for the lack of a better word) "macho" part of the rock songs*. I can't even imagine him singing stuff like Son and Daughter, Stone Cold Crazy or even Liar or in the newest songs One Vision. Some songs that are almost pop like Hammer to Fall for example, might work, but heavier songs, I'm afraid that they will never will be perfect. At least, like some said, they won't sound like mumbling, the new guy at least know the words. As for the slower tempos, this is an obvious consequence of time, and by bringing Rufus they probably are already thinking about a way to fix it. * OK, don't you ever think it was a homophobic comment. The most stupid thing ("I'm gay as a daffodil, darling!"... remember?) is to think any Queen fan is homophobic. Edit: and something I forgot to mention: it seems that we have seen many "Freddie replacements" that are quite good... in just one song/style. It's not easy to find someone that can cover all the variety of Queen's catalog, I think this will never happen. There can be only one Freddie. |

What's exciting for me about this super-long forum topic is the prospect that maybe all the hysterical anti-Lambert posts can remain in one place. |
Daniel Nester 01.07.2012 12:41 |
Jesus Christ, Marcos, Adam lacks "macho" to sing some Tie Your Mother Down and Son and Daughter. Ooook. And Paul Rogers lacks "femme" to do "Killer Queen" and "Don't Stop Me Now." *There are plenty of homophobic Queen fans, Marcos. Maybe not you, or maybe you doth protest too much, but plenty of 'em show their face here. |

1.) My opinion: FM >> PR >> Martel >> average level of singers on Tribute 92 >> Lambert. This was the worst concert with Queen songs I have EVER heard. 2.) Simply said - he cant sing! He has range, but he cant use it... His vibrato is totally unlistenable and he is not able to control it. All songs were butchered with this. Other than that he has awful tone in high notes. BTW would you recognize beginning of Dont Stop Me Now without knowledge of lyrics? Awful awful awful! 3.) He was completely lost in some songs. He simply didnt know how to sing them and sadly - he can not improvise, he is not able to "cover" it. 4.) During the whole concert, there was not even one track that I would say "ok pretty good, this type of stuff fits him"... nothing. Badly sung songs were followed by terribly sung songs. Best tracks were songs without him. 5.) His stage performance is embarrasing and insulting.... What was that foolery in the Another One Bites The Dust??? Paul, all forgiven, please come back! |

I've just noticed that during Dragon Attack performance, the bass player attempted a quick snippet of Fairy Feller's bass line and then he played Son and Daughter bass riff. |

People need some more lessons on text interpretation it seems, but oh well it's not my job to do so. After watching it almost entirely (skipping 70% of it though), some interesting (get a thesaurus now. Does "interesting" mean "good", "awesome", "incredible", "fantastic" or something similar? NO!) bits with Adam were Dragon Attack (the bass solo was a response to all these Deacon widows I suppose) and FBG. The rest, it's pretty much disposable as it is. AOBTD was truly awful. When it was annoying, it was as annoying as with Paul. Or more. Just in a different way, but still very annoying, to the point that I couldn't watch it live. And it won't get any better with any of these QE singers or anyone else. Just different. The best part of the whole thing to me still was that double neck RS. And the drum duet was pretty nice as well. |

to mention lambert in the same breath as paul rodgers is an insult to paul rodgers. we're talking about a superb singer with an impressive catalouge of self composed music which has held up very well over 4 decades. on the other hand, there's a guy who can reach some impressive high notes, but has no control over his vibrato which in many cases makes him sound like a sheep. he also cannot sing a rock song to save his life, when he tries to, it sounds like the "broadway tries to rock" album. furthermore; he has no stage presence and is awkward on stage, to say the least. he tries to make up for this by wearing lots of make up and camp / outrageous outfits. This turns into another backfire though, considering who created the role as lead singer of Queen. this Kiev thing was almost as bad as Amsterdam 2002. PLEASE brian and roger; leave the Queen name alone and go out as "may & taylor". it's obvious they enjoy playing together, and they still sound damn good actually!! but this lambert thing pisses all over a good name. and by the way; is there a small print on the contract signed by x factor contestants which says "the winner gets to sing with Queen at some point" ??????? for f*** sake!!! |

Adam Lambert was a polarizing performer long before his name was ever linked with Queen and will continue to be long after everybody has moved on. Nobody has an obligation to search around for a few nice things to throw in with their broad and general distaste. It's not Grade 3 where everybody at least gets a little trophy. One man's 'scorched earth criticism' is another's frank assessment of somebody whose sound and artistic choices leave virtually nothing to like or appreciate to the ears of many. It's not complicated. And rejection of any "femme-y ways" is not necessarily synonymous with homophobia either, any more than rejection of Lady GaGa on stage in her underwear or something is a backlash against heterosexuality. Sometimes artists make image choices that get in the way of communicating their music for some and leverage it's message for others. No big deal and a calculated risk they take. |

Sometimes artists make image choices that get in the way of communicating their music for some and leverage it's [sic] message for others. This is the kind of nonsense the 2000-plus Deity Poster Club throws around all the time on Queenzone fora, and, for sentient beings at least, leaves them scratching their heads and run away screaming. What the frick does that quote mean? "Image choices"? The same could be said of Freddie, frankly. White leather shorts aren't everyone's cup of tea. I'd like to hear a *single* example of *any* artist who made image choices that didn't get in the way of communicating for some and didn't leverage its message for others. Or, put another way, any artist who does *not* make image choices that do same? It's more than a little disingenuous to throw around the term "femme" as regards an openly gay person and not think it's not approaching homophobic, or intentionally naive, or just-don't-know-the-connotations-of-words/ The real head-scratcher, however, the Lady Ga Ga counter-example. There haven't been many heterophobic hate crimes, for example, at least none documented. Maybe you mean rape? At any rate, I have plenty of good things to say about Adam Lambert, his singing, his image. Sometimes tight leather pants and spiky shoulders works, even for uptight heteros. |

I'll be writing complete review on the performance in the next day or so (I'll make sure I get it done before I head off to New York City), but I'll quickly summarize it: It was a pretty good first show (lots of nerves/errors in spots--but it's completely excusable), and for the 1st half, Adam did better than what I predicted (and left his EMA performance in the dust). I thought he was going to be off the wall/obnoxious, and oversing the songs to death--but I was taken aback by some performances (he actually did JAZZ TOUR phrasing on the fast WWRY--and didn't hit the A4s), and it shows that when he controls himself, he can get the job done pretty well. The Roger Taylor/Brian May sections were great (nice Roger vocals on AKOM), and that bass player is awesome. The second half had Adam starting to get back into old habits (out of control vibrato, and very pitchy on some songs), but I'm going to give him a pass on this one and chalk it up to "1st show nerves." By the time the Hammy gigs come up, I'm sure everybody will be well-oiled. I'll be waiting for the next show! |

Holly -- The entire post was trying to parse a single sentence of GF's previous response. That sentence makes no sense. Perhaps it's a reading level issue on your part; I can't tell from my lofty perch. Safe to say that trying to explain away Adam Lambert by making a blanket statement so ridiculous and non-sensical has its hazards. As for a typo--horror!--in my post and my use of sic, yes, guilty as charged. It's not universal or established style to italicize "sic"; I work from the MLA manual. Anyway, it's one of my pet peeves getting "it's/its" wrong, especially when the author is trying to sound like he or she know everything about Adam Lambert and all artists everywhere. The it's/its error is not as bad, however, as forgetting to use two commas before and after "however," which you do in your post. It makes it seem like you're trying to "follow" this person named "however." |

I'll be waiting for the next show! That's exactly what happened : the beginning of the show had a rather restrained Adam on the most exciting part of the setlist (WWTLF a highlight, too bad about the out of key big note at the end): after the guitar solo AL gradually lost the plot, relied on old nasty habits (sheep-like vibrato, unreliable pitch, out of key demonstrations), as he grew tired and his kept getting thinner. Bo Rhap was a low point in terms of technique and style. Mix that with a setlist that had become very predictable at this point, and the last third of the show was a bit painful to watch. I agree however that he regularly hits high notes that even Freddie seldom attempted. Can AL be persuaded that LESS IS MORE ? |

Hence I can write whatever I like in the knowledge this is an informal internet forum and I have nothing to prove, whereas you need to be 100% correct otherwise you look like an idiot. As for the substance of your ramblings, well there is none. You haven't understood GF's comments and have therefore loaded on some baggage about homophobia. Quite simply (for you) it's possible to dislike Lambert's singing and image without being homophobic. Clear enough? |
Daniel Nester 02.07.2012 08:19 |
Holly -- You're not clear at all. You're actually doing the trademark Queenzone Willful Misinterpretation I never said it's impossible to dislike Adam Lambert without being homophobic. You're being willfully stupid now and putting words in my mouth. That's not informal; that's dishonest. Here's GF's sentence again-- "Sometimes artists make image choices that get in the way of communicating their music for some and leverage it's message for others" This still leaves me perplexed, and anyone who cares about the English language should. Listen. Some people here, like GregSynth and others, like to spot notes and critique singing. I critique language. Maybe I don't do a good job, but anyone can see, except you maybe, that this statement is complete bollocks. He's trying to say, I think, that Adam Lambert turns him off, and Lambert belongs to an exclusive club of artists who make choices of presentation that alienate some and attract others. As if every other artist since the beginning of time doesn't do that already! It's just an example of thinking around here that's lazy at best and at worst dishonest just to get a point across. That's all -- no homophobia; he's not a mass murderer. He just wrote a bad sentence. A really, really bad sentence, one he thought was, like, awesome. But what exactly is this "message" that Adam Lambert in particular is trying to "leverage"? For teenybopper Glamberts to love him and make his album debut at #1, and for boring-ass Queenzoner fogeys to have violent reactions? I didn't buy Adam Lambert's albums. I like him on American Idol. I like that he's inspired by glam and rock. I do think he's a good singer and in many ways is a throwback to androgynous rock frontmen. I have no dog in the hunt for his success. As always, people round these parts need to get edumacated in loaded language when it comes to making, you know, gay comments. Which is completely, mindbogglingly odd to me, this being a website dedicated to Queen and all. Such is life. |

He's really not such a bad singer when he cuts the Mariah Carey shit. If he could just focus on the material, serve the songs a bit, it'd be a better show. I don't really think his voice suits the material, but there are plenty of ways for this show to improve. We'll see I guess. But he really, really has to stop those off-key improvs. |

Well I had to watch a youtube video of the show bit by bit out here in the boonies with a stop and start download speed. gnosbt videos were the ones. I couldn't hear the bass player much at all, which ruined AOBTD and CLTCL. Even when he was the featured player it sounded thin and anemic. I loved seeing Brian and Roger out there having a good time, more or less. I agree that Adam needs to get rid of some Adam mannerisms that are annoying additions to Queen material, and his voice isn't right for everything, but considering they didn't have much rehearsal time to put this thing together, as far as I know anyway, I thought he did pretty well with the vocals. I am looking forward to seeing the show from farther down the road when they get more comfortable and get some of the bugs out, if there is time for that, and hope that there will eventually be a DVD so I can see it uninterrupted. Last couple of times I was here I couldn't post anything, so haven't been back for a long time, but I knew I'd get all the negative reviews here, so couldn't resist dropping in, and when I tried to post it worked this time. I even was able to access my profile and change my email. Will wonders never cease? |

Or, you know, Freddie Mercury wearing Glenn Hughes outfits. Or you may not remember these things; that's fine. A couple more thoughts: Everyone here under 60 quit complaining about Brian and Roger doing things s-l-o-w, or omitting something particularly difficult. You don't have the life experience on you to criticise for these reasons. When they toured for Queen & PR I remember Brian saying that got up one day and his hand wouldn't work. The older you get the more unpleasant things happen. I enjoyed the hell out of seeing them out there, however they wanted to play. And at least give Adam a break as whenever anyone else is out there singing with Queen Freddie's ghost isn't far away. Queen's songs were either written by or for Freddie's voice, and performed that way. Some adjustments might help. Adam does not have the luxury of being there for the genesis of these songs and growing with them and knowing them in the way that the Queen members did. Learning that much material in order to sing it was more of a crash course I think. I hope he can abandon "Adamizing" them with the flourishes he likes as those don't fit, though I guess some of this is about reframing the music for a younger crowd too. It could be that I am too old to appreciate that, but then I never liked Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston. |

The Real Wizard 02.07.2012 20:09 |
I quite enjoyed leafing through this thread. Zebonka's posts were more entertaining than much of the show. My initial thoughts: -Brian and Roger still have the goods -Adam is a very good singer, although the vibrato needs to be tamed and some of his vocal antics go beyond what the song calls for That said - no matter how good or bad it is, people are going to complain. Anyone who attempts to sing Queen songs is subject to such incredible scrutiny under the Mercury microscope, because the man has set the bar so damn high. Anyone with functioning ears knows that Freddie Mercury is the greatest rock singer of all time. But it doesn't make all other singers unworthy of attempting Queen songs, as so many people seem to believe. Lambert is quite good, although he doesn't meet the needs of all of the songs. No single singer can. Even the Queen Extravaganza needed four lead singers to cover all the ground. But there is great potential here with Lambert. Certainly not for an album, but for an extended life together on the road. They have a few kinks to iron out, and a few gigs from now this thing could be very good. And for the record - the fast We Will Rock You was no slower than it was in 1977. But Dragon Attack ... man, that was slow. Under Pressure was the best song overall, both vocally and for Brian looking absolutely badass with the double-neck. And as far as I'm concerned, Lambert's best song was Who Wants To Live Forever. I invite everyone to try to remove their biases for a minute and truly ask themselves, how many living singers in this world could do adequate justice to that song in the original key? Not many. In the absence of a second guitar, having Lambert grab the harmony guitar line at the end of the I Want It All solo was a wise decision. Like him or not - he is a pro. Most singers would've fucked that one up royally. No pun intended. Couldn't help but smile all the way through A Kind Of Magic. Magic it was. |

I don't care how great Brian May and Roger still sound at this point. They look desperate and old, It's not about grey hair, it's more about their attitude...Look at Rush, A new heavy album and playing as tight as ever... if one of their members died I doudt they go in the Rush + lambert route...Only Queen the idiots do that...I watched this show for the second time, and my opinion is the same...Lambert could sing and has great range, but his voice doesn't fit Queen's music, and he sounds embarrassing at times with his soul singing crap....Like the above poster said, no one singer can cover all the styles freddie could sing..songs like Sheer heart attack, stoned Cold Crazy, then sing Love Of My life, Ect...that's a rare talent Mercury had.. The other thing that's starting to irk me is Brian's voice...I think I had enough of his winey version of Love Of My Life, The first time I heard him sing it, honoring Freddie was touching, but now he sounds dreadful and winey....Roger still sounds good, but even in his prime he was hit or miss for me as a songwriter/singer. But for some reason he's aged as a singer better than Brian. |
tomchristie22 03.07.2012 01:17 |
Stoned Cold Crazy lol.. Anyway, those weren't very good examples of his vocal diversity, he never sang particularly 'roughly' on the heavy songs in the early-mid 70s. Stone Cold Crazy, sure it's sung fastly, but he's not exactly sounding like a metal singer there. It's not like he adopts a completely different tone of voice which you couldn't distinguish from other performances like LOML. Brian's voice is starting to fail him, yes, but it's still nice that he tries. I'd much rather him interjecting with a couple of songs than not, even if his voice does end up sounding like a strained piece of crap. I'd much rather listen to Brian in bad shape than Adam Lambert altogether. |

I am going to see the concert tonight :) I saw a lot of the great city of Moscow in the last days (my first ever visit) but of course the incentive to come here was the concert. I watched Kiev with my host Alex Smirnov on the web and we renamed the band Queen + TSP (that screeching person). My friends from Argentina who are here and who already were in Kiev are annoyed about the screaming AL fans who do not play by the rules queuing for front row :-) I think we have a good time watching Brian and Roger tonight. We must go to a state of denial when AL comes on stage but perhaps he is so much better when you are actually watching the concert. I also think Rufus does a great job as well as Brian who is so well rehearsed and I simply loved the white haired couple doing Magic and DOOL, a very emotional moment. Where have all these years gone? How weird to bring Freddie on the screen - he is forever young and does not fit to the old guys :-) |
Daniel Nester 03.07.2012 08:06 |
YourV, I am jealous. I think it's a strange thing Queen+ has done with warm-up shows in huge places, as in the Ukraine, but the Moscow show will be better. I think they'll tinker with the set list for maybe 1-2 songs. And I think Adam Lambert will be better. |
Daniel Nester 03.07.2012 08:09 |
For the record, I thought Adam and the band as a whole were so-so, and the set list not nearly as different as it should have been. "Killer Queen" should have been in there somewhere, and as much as I am a fan of "Dragon Attack," I have no idea what that's there instead of, say, "Play the Game." The outside world seems to think of the first show as a "triumph": link Here's an excerpt, so I guess y'all can barnacle your snark onto it: Confident and assuredly in control, Lambert led the crowd through an exhilarating version of the group’s “Fat Bottomed Girls," sharing an undeniable chemistry with May and leading the raucous Kiev crowd through a majestic two-hour extravaganza that included an action packed set list of Queen hits and deep cuts. Lambert hit his stride early in the show, trading vocals with Taylor on “Under Pressure.” He then effortlessly segued from big rock anthems such as “I Want It All” to poignant renderings of introspectively aching pieces, such as his soaring interpretation of “Who Wants to Live Forever?” Lambert’s voice and impassioned delivery brought just the right tone of longing and introspection to the lyrics, and his connection to the song and his audience grew even stronger with each verse. |

I'm wondering what Nester falls back on when someone says they just don't like Lambert's singing voice or his bad habit of wasting valuable seconds on aimless trills that sail way out of key. Is that homophobia too? I can link you guys to actual examples of said homophobia over on the Facebook page if it'd help you refresh your memory on what actually constitutes such a prejudice. But what do I know - people with high post counts aren't actually allowed to have an opinion on anything. Maybe I should start a new account. Lambert did a lot better than his previous experiments with Queen, but let's not kid ourselves. His hit:miss ratio at this gig was unacceptable, even for a first outing. He wins points for not relying on a teleprompter and managing to avoid saying "HIT ME WITH YOUR HEART AND WITH YOUR SOUL" at every given opportunity. The duet of Under Pressure was great (although I mainly credit Roger for that). Who Wants To Live Forever was quite respectable (except for that last note). The show was better than a lot of the naysayers said it would be, but it had more than its share of 'train wrecks' (as Brian put it) and you can't just pretend it's homophobia whenever someone says something that displeases you. This is a musical discussion, so comment on the music already. |

On the bright side: A kind of magic was probably Roger's strongest version ever... What an absolutely fantastic version from him... For me it was the closest someone came that night to a vocal performance at Mercury level:-):-) Also, Brian clearly made his homework and his playing was actually really great imo. AL certainly has talent... He has the gift to hit high notes (I'm not saying I like the tone of his voice when he goes up though!)so he's actually able to reproduce the singing lines like that. But, FM had an immense musicality and this is the biggest difference, of course coupled with the fact that Freddie's timbre is so much more beautiful and steady from lower notes to higher ones. Freddie even knew to sing effectively with limited range. That's something AL can only dream off... Whenever he does adlibs or improvised lines...he just hasn't got it to do that imho. For example in STL... FM could fill up those 2 or 3 minutes at the end of the song with beautiful improvisations...AL --> forget it! |

Freddie was, at least, convincing as a singer. When he sung Somebody to Love it really was reminscent of a gospel song. Lambert, however, sung the lines as if he was arguing with a waiter about the quality of his lasagna. He was mostly bad. Nevertheless,he did a good job on WWTLF and UP, which suggests with a few more years experience under his belt he might be a good performer. Unfortunately, Queen don't have the luxury of time: in a few short years they will be eligible for free bus passes. Hopefully Brian, Roger and AL will go their separate ways and Queen will recruit Martel for a bit. Either that or Roger should just take over vocal duties. If Queen+AL showed anything, it's that Roger's voice is still strong and he could easily take over lead vocals, possibly with Rufus on drums. I think though that BRian and Roger would see that as Queen minus rather than Queen plus, which is why they feel they need a "name" singer. Damn their eyes! They need to spemd more time hanging out with the Foos instead of showbiz luvvies. |

Y'all have pretty well nailed it. Lambert can do a good job when he knuckles down and pays attention to the music; see Under Pressure and Who Wants To Live Forever. One's a great duet, the other was a great solo performance ('cept for maybe that last bit). He doesn't lack ability; this music is just a different beast to what he usually does. It's a bit of a mismatch, but I don't think the gap is so great that a bit of focus couldn't bridge it. Now listen to his Somebody to Love and Bohemian Rhapsody; there's a couple of real messes in there. And it's nothing to do with him being a bad singer, it's just bad choices. I'd almost say he's acting like a lead guitarist who hasn't quite settled into the idea of serving the music just yet. Too much noodling. Roger's drumming was pretty soft, but I was really impressed by his singing. I would really, really like to hear Brian and Roger make some music without a 3rd singer, and I don't much care if they call it Queen or Bottled Pumpkin. |

"Nevermind Lambert, can we get rid of Spike and his awful synth sounds?" Yeah. What the hell was that all about anyway?? |

Freddie even knew to sing effectively with limited range. That's something AL can only dream off... Whenever he does adlibs or improvised lines...he just hasn't got it to do that imho. For example in STL... FM could fill up those 2 or 3 minutes at the end of the song with beautiful improvisations...AL --> forget it!Bingo. Freddie could do far more with one octave than Lambert does with three. But comparisons aside - if Lambert would just sing the bloody song, he would actually be doing a far better job. |

Zebonka, I don't really fall back on anything when I don't like what Adam Lambert sings, but safe to I don't say I don't like how he once kissed a member of his band or projects/leverages the wrong message. I dunno. Melisma is an overused word, as is oversung. What got on my nerves with Adam Lambert, as it did/does with Paul Rogers, is just they forgot words. That will be fixed, but still. |

I hated the expressions on his face, his shrill voice (when it was) and his going off-key at times and over-singing. In general, his voice is not suited for most of Queens catalogue. So many times I was uncomfortable listening/watching him. I also dislike the stupid bickering on this board even tho entertaining at times. You people are a bunch of know-it-alls. Granted, I'm quite certain you know more about music in general than I do! However, there's only a couple of you who can insult and do it in a "fun" way. Nester, you aren't one of em. I know....who am I?? Just anuther middle aged person who happens to love Queen back in the day. I could listen to them for hours on end and never tire of it all. |

"how he once kissed a member of his band" It might be just me, but I'd forgotten about that already! "However, there's only a couple of you who can insult and do it in a "fun" way" Regardless of whether or not you perceive me to be someone who's good at it or bad at it, I feel like I have to point out - there are very rarely any times that I actually want to insult anyone on here. 'Somebodywholovesadam' reckons I was harsh with them, but I totally wasn't. I know that we're supposed to drive around the internet with our handbrake on whenever a fangirl/fanboy starts posting crap on our forums because it's "mean" to do anything else, but seriously ... I don't see why I should have to put up with it. "What got on my nerves with Adam Lambert, as it did/does with Paul Rogers, is just they forgot words" It's always a pisser, that. For my money, I'm more comfortable with someone who's at least engaging the audience and flubbing the odd lyric, as opposed to someone who spends half of their time looking at a teleprompter. As a punter, it's just as annoying for me to look up and see someone peering at lyrics as it must be for Brian to look out and see a sea of mobile phones filming his ass. |

"Freddie could do far more with one octave than Lambert does with three." And for those of us who don't see the point of this whole AL thing, this sentence sums it up. Adam Lambert has an amazing voice. Freddie Mercury had an amazing voice. Adam Lambert is a decent singer. Freddie Mercury was (arguably) rock's greatest singer. Of course AL wouldn't hold a candle to Freddie Mercury, and no one can. |

If this thread is any guide and sentence clarity was an Olympic sport you'd be sweating in a mascot suit, hauling water bottles and rubbing Ben Gay on the lips of real communicators. Did you forget the quotations on "message" this time? Eliminating them kind of loses that smarmy sense of exasperated incredulousness that some of an artist's choices just might be in service of a deliberate theme. When one pulls a hamstring pretending that concept is even remotely difficult to plumb it becomes clear they were never really capable of dicussing the ideas in the first place. As far as I can tell your investment in issues that affect gay people is about an inch deep, inch and a half if you count the self serving part. You are completely ignorant on the specifics here: You clearly don't know much about Lambert, or the extent to which he himself has tethered his sexuality to his art and his fame and how clear he has made it that he intends to be a vocal and visible role model. You don't know who makes up his fanbase. You don't know what you're talking about. So you assemble arguments clearly predicated on uptight redneck male stereotypes and project them like a clueless ass at a liberal minded female poster and ramble about Mick Jagger instead. Those with a productive investment in human issues like this don't stoop to faux outrage and the indiscriminate splatter of slyly manufactured homophobia, they attempt to look at things as they are, and sometimes framing them in a way that is honest means it will not be politically correct. They don't handicap gay people or treat them like china dolls when what is deserved and has been earned is the equal right and equal responsibility to succeed and shine or fail and learn on their own merit. I've never once implied that Lambert projects the wrong message. What I very specifically communicated is that I think he projects the right message ineffectively. Oh and that he often sounds like shit. I said that too. So I'll worry about keeping track of what I say and what I mean and supporting meaningful equality as I see it, and you can focus on making sure you're conspicuously seen regularly doodling pride rainbows in some earnest hipster grub pub in the U district. Loose end: You mentioned in one way or another higher post counts on QZ not once, not twice, but THREE times. It really does kind of blow my mind that somebody would volunteer to lay themsleves out as that much of an imperious ass on the internet. Your inflated sense of superiority is unearned on just about every front you've tried to assert it on. I can think of at least three high count regular posters on QZ off the top of my head who almost certainly have superior intelligence, you're not consistently coherent, your comprehension sucks ass and you actually posted "[sic]" at somebody and yacked about the MLA guide. Hilarious in a Jesus Christ kind of way. Anyway, whatever. I'm done with this. Apologies to those weary of the arguing on this topic whose names don't rhyme with Spaniel Fester. |

Watching him is a complete visual assault, his facial expressions and over dramatic way, then you add the shrill voice to it all and it's over the top. I love Brian and Roger and the music, but like others said, I don't have to watch/listen to them and so I wont. I so so wanted to like Q+AL! Ain't happenin. |
