Tempe/Phoenix 1982

Posted on 12.04.2006 15:40:31
I have a book, written by Ken Dean, published in 1991/1993(Dutch Version), which says that Queen played the Coliseum in Phoenix on september 10th 1982.
If you check the Arizona page at Worldstdiums.com, you'll see that the full name is actually the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. You'll also find the Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, which I think is the former ASU Arena (the name of the team starts with ASU), which was often played by U2 as their Arizona/Phoenix date(s). They started the Joshua Tree Tour there when it was still called the Activity Center or something like that.
So I think that you just got the names of the towns and venues mixed up, as there no other Arizona dates on the tour.

Anyway, this site is still an incredible piece of work, so keep up the good work.

Och, Ken Dean book include lots of errors like Greg Brooks book. I personally always use my brain :)

I'd like to avoid any books right now - they all use the same sources which are in many cases absolutely wrong.

ASU Arena in Tempe sounds good BUT - look at the ticket stub on my site, it clearly says Veteran's Memorial Coliseum. Wasn't ASU Arena called Veteran's Memorial Coliseum? :-) Confused...

Tempe is an suburb of Phoenix and there is a Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in phoenix - but probably not directly in tempe, it's somewhere in the middle of the city. Confusion continues...

dont know if this helps but its the closest i could get:
http://www.answers.com/topic/wells-fargo-arena-tempe
it could also be Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium located in Tempe, AZ
i cant find anything else in Tempe, AZ

According to Ratty, it was some "large unversity area" and he thinks it was in Phoenix. Which would suggest the Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, not Tempe.

large university area could be Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium which is located on Arizona State University campus.
But the ticket says Veterans Memoria, so unless it has been moved to Tempe it must be the VMC im Phoenix AZ.
Do we know for sure that they played in Phoenix that day?

Quote from Ratty: "Firstly, in answer to your question about Tempe in 1982 - Yes, it was a show in Phoenix - or as close by - as I remember it's a big university area."

as i said; Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium is located on the Arizona State University campus and the university is located in Tempe, AZ. GGMA is perviously know as ASU Gammage.
Other university possibilites might be the Phoenix University that is also located in Tempe and just 10 min from Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium
The VMC was the home field for the Phoenix Suns (NBA team) back then (1968-1992), dont know if that helps alot.
It could also be Wells Fargo Arena thats also located on Arizona State University campus
Hope any of this helps =)

Yes, ASU is often mentioned in the concertographies but since the ticket says Veteran's Memorial Coliseum, I think we can leave Tempe and trust Phoenix :)

" but since the ticket says Veteran's Memorial Coliseum, I think we can leave Tempe and trust Phoenix :)"

unless it has been moved to Tempe im sure its the VMC in phoenix as the ticket says so =)

Yes, I'm quite sure it was moved either way - from Tempe to Phoenix or from Phoenix to Tempe :-)
